What do you think about maps in video games? Post your favorites.
Do you think certain exploration heavy games benefit from more vague "rough sketch" maps with minimal details(think the Thief maps), maps that you can only access at certain points(Lorelei and the Laser Eyes or The Lonesome Guild) or are automaps the way to go in your opinion?
I've been playing the Thief series after playing the System Shock series back to back and I enjoyed the exploration in both even though they have very different map styles. Even the auto filled in SS2 map was a very enjoyable area to explore.
my only other SS2 save was in the body of the many so I don't have a more filled out map

For the most part, I prefer making my own maps. Especially for old games like Ultima.

I didn't even read the thread before entering, but now that I have I have nothing to add... so while I know you're talking about automaps, I'll go a bit off-topic and include world maps / overview. I like SMT2's one where it was designed as a program you're looking it at.

Minimalistic maps you need to discover + manual or automatic scribbles are the best method for exploration heavy games, such as survival horror.
