Where did they go?

This game made me realize that if you want to survive a population collapse you need 60% women 40% men. It doesn't matter if you have a lot of resources if you have more men then women then collapse is inevitable.
>>
People who think this is even TOP5 havent played the genre much lol
>>
It was pretty comfy but IIRC I quit because it didn't scale well
i.e. you don't unlock better buildings or anything, if you want to go from 30 to 60 pop you just build the exact same things all over again
>>
manor lords is better
>>
banished is great, i with there was more to it
but at the same time it keep things simple , there's no layers of bullshit and creepscaling, it's great

>clamoring for DLC behind
>Hey bros this game can be easily modified, this is an indie game after all
>Have fun make what you want from this game DLC is for lazy devs, unless its fixing a bunch of bugs
>Adding in a bunch of stuff that basically makes it a new game, because the size of DLC is 1/3-1/2 of the base game
>Vidya gayms are for everyone to enjoy, why make me charge you even more money I'd rather wait till the second game to take your money.
>>>>>>>NOOOOOOOOOO NOOOOOOOOOOOO YOU CANT DO THIS TO US. ADDING IN MODS IS FAR FAR TO COMPLEX. CONSOLES CANT USE MODS THINK OF US SHITEATERS YOU MONSTER. MODDING IS IMMORAL AND EVIL IT ALLOWS USERS TO CREATE WHATEVER THEY WANT WITHOUT THE GAME CREATORS APPROVAL. MODDERS CANT MAKE MONEY OFF THEIR WORK, UNLESS ITS DONATING MONEY TO A PATREON.

Modern goymers AKA zoomers are beyond literally mentally retarded its unreal. NOOO GAMES HAVE TO TELL ME EVERYTHING GAMES HAVE TO HAVE MASSIVE YELLOW PAINT EVERYWHERE ITS FAR TO CONFUSING WITHOUT IT HOW AM I SUPPOSE TO KNOW WHAT TO DO WHERE TO GO HOW TO THINK THIS IS FAR TO COMPLEX REEEEE WHY CANT I REPEATEDLY CLICK X TO WIN WHY CANT I REPEATEDLY PRESS X AS MORE AND MORE EFFECTS BANGS LOUD NOISES FLASHING LIGHTS AND COLOURS HAPPEN INJECTING MORE AND MORE DOPAMINE INTO MY BRAIN
OH MY GOD WHY DOES THIS GAME LACK A DOZEN DIFFERENT GAMBLING SYSTEMS WITH DIFFERENT MECHANICS THAT YOU CAN ONLY PLAY BY SPENDING REAL WORLD MONEY THAT COSTS A DOLLAR FOR THE SMALLEST FORM OF GAMBLING WITH ODDS THAT WOULD MAKE CASINOS SO MASSIVELY ERECT 1:10 TO "WIN YOUR DOLLAR BACK"

3/10 GAME FUCKING BOOMER GARBAGE AND YOU RETARDS WONDER WHY MOBILE/SPORTS GAMES MAKE SO MUCH MONEY.
Games are meant to be massive powertrips that inject dopamine 247 there should be no thinking involved just pressing a single button to win repeatedly as the combo gets bigger causing more effects to happen on screen. And when bored there should be massive forms of never ending gambling spending real world money

No particular order, but my Top 3 would be

>Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom (It's by far the best of the Impressions games)
>Anno 1800 (I never liked the Anno games much but this was just absolutely stellar)
>Anno 117 (Just as good as 1800, but with improvements in systems and design that made me love it even more)

Honourable mention goes to Caesar 3 with the Augustus Mod. Emperor is still better, but that's a great mod. Pharaoh and Zeus are worth playing too.

I haven't played Banished though, I came to this thread to see if it seemed good.

I guess I'll also throw a shout out to the Settlers and Stronghold series. I don't think they make the top 5, and Settlers 2 is the only great Settlers game imo, but Settlers 2 is good and Stronghold Crusader was nifty.

Playing Settlers 1 as a kid was a very memorable experience and going back to Settlers 2 Gold decades later I was glad to see it still held up.

lol melty

Cool game, it kind of hits a point where you achieve perfect equilibrium and then it's boring. Like a solved math problem.
Needed more, not sure what.

Rimworld is my favorite to be honest famalam, but only because I do increasingly ludicrous challenges like Naked and Alone in the tundra or shit like that

Does "The Guild" count as a city builder? If so then The Guild 2 or 3 probably deserves a shout out too.
>>
>>727776551
>best city builders
The game has 1 (one) thing you need to get to make it boring: don't expand too fast.
That's literally the only killer, growing too fast.

The moment you learn to throttle your growth, the game becomes trivial.
>>
>>727778378
I agree, but that doesn't mean banished is bad
More than one game can be good
>>
>>727783019
iirc in The Guild you play as a guy, not as a city

Yeah, but you're indirectly managing the city. It's a pretty cool take on the system.

Kind'a like how Shinobi Ryu is a Sengoku game but you're playing as a clan of Ninja, not one of the Kingdoms, so instead of conquering Japan you influence who conquers Japan from the shadows.
>>
>>727776551
Vanilla Banished gets old quick. The Colonial Charter mod or the megamod (which includes CC) add quite a bit, but can be a bit lanky. The chink-made Settlement Survival borrows heavily from Banished with CC.
>>
>>727777783
Where did they come from?
>>
Farthest Frontier has finally trumped Banished for me. It just feels good in every way plus introduces actually fun combat
>>
What I like about Banished is it's comfy aesthetic. It's much smaller scale than most city builders, it's more what you call a village builder, and its art, music, and feeling of isolation are big reason I keep coming back to it. There are far more impressive city builders in terms of intricate systems and sheer variety of production chains and challenges to overcome, but if I had to put a word to Banished's appeal it would be 'elegance'. That same elegant balance to it makes it fairly simple to "solve", which is why I rarely stay interested in a Banished save very long. Even with mods adding more variety to the game, it's like working on a drawing or a painting. There is no predetermined stopping point, a village is only done when you decide to leave it as is. It's a very relaxing sort of city builder, once you get to the point that you're villagers aren't constantly freezing and starving.
>>
>>727783697
Where did you come from cotton eyed joe?
>>
>>727783137
Population control is the core of every city builder, but Banished's dev never got a chance to elaborate beyond it. It's a solid foundation to a game that could've been amazing. At least we have mods to make up for what could have been.

They dropped development midway, half finished.
I'll be surprised if there's not at least 2 games doing better since then. We are in a golden age of indy games

It was ok. To many it was babbys first city builder, which is why it was loved by so many, but unfortunately it's really shallow. It being cozy relly carried it.
In the end its only legacy is the river jew.

Never heard of this one, sell me on it.

As soon as you tell me your city builder has combat, I'm already wary. I loved Anno117, but one of the things I liked more about 1800 is that 117 put way more focus into the combat, which if you're playing properly you don't do anyway.

>Ceasar 3 Base
Fun, but outdated and clunky.
>Pharaoh
Way too hard, and way too grindy. Pyramids take a literal real life hour to build and a single walker going wrong can lead to half your city de-levelling. Also kind'a buggy.
>Zeus
Fun but way too easy, and unfortunately outside the Temples of the Gods, Greece just has the weakest aesthetic out of Rome, Egypt, China and Greece. It feels like Rome-lite.
>Ceasar 3: Augustus
Good but clearly meant for people who're already very familiar with C3, fixes a lot of the issues but really throws you in feet first. Skirmish only too.

Emperor hits the perfect middle ground. It's easily the most playable, with the best QoL and a global labour pool, it lets you block walkers to stop your city from getting fucked over by RNG, it's got an amazing aesthetic, it's not as braindead as Zeus and it's not as frustrating or slow as Pharaoh.

Colonial Charter sort of addresses this but you still end up running into the same problem. Also doesn't solve the issue of a few households hoarding everything while everyone else starves.

That's the advantage of more elaborate city builder games like the Impressions games or Anno, rather than survival ones like Banished or Frostpunk.
>>
>>727777783
It was just one dude doing everything from scratch. I used to follow his blog way back, he created the engine as a passion project and then decided to make a game ontop of it.

Also this was back when early access basically wasn't a thing, but countless people would clamor him for a beta or whatever and he always flat out said "I'm hitting all the goals I've set for myself to consider the game done, then I'll release it as 1.0 and leave it at that".
He even said the only post-release patch he'd do was to add mod-support.

Then he disappeared for like 8 years, likely living good cause the game sold over ~3 million copies at $20 each, and he did it without a publisher taking a large cut.
