What era is your main inspiration?
Why did the developers of that time make textures or models that way? What limitations were there?
Why did they use a certain color palette?
These are questions a "retro" indie dev should be asking. I don't hate the idea of 3D games using old graphics as an art style but I hate the execution most of the time.

Yeah these are two different art styles between the gun and the level. The gun is more evocative of Quake, while the level is like some caricature of PS1 aesthetics.

based mapperbro. I used to be heavily into mapping around age 10 in 2000 especially for HL, CS, Natural selection mod, etc. Never even got close to finishing a map either. Around that time one of my clan members for Medal of Honor Allied Assault was a talented mapper, he had a portfolio built up of maps he created. He actually got hired to work for Infinity Ward and told me he was working on a game called "Call of Duty."

If I had just continued with my studies I could have gotten a career in gamedev as a level designer. Too bad.

Amusingly, Call of Duty still has a lot of Quake 3 engine bits under the hood despite the engine being upgraded with every iteration for 20 years. Supposedly they still do BSP blockouts for level design with something resembling Radiant or Worldcraft.
Unfortunately the mapper/modder to AAA gamedev pipeline has been closed for over a decade. I just do it for fun.

If I were using vanilla Quake textures they would be aligned.
But I'm using a texture WAD converted from American McGee's Alice and the bricks are unfortunately offset very irregularly.
Will probably just end up editing the texture.

The Alice bricks have seams that are notably unaligned vertically compared to vanilla Quake bricks, which can look odd at corners.
