Are the Ryza games a good place to start Atelier? I was thinking either that or Atelier Ayesha since those games seem to have the cutest girls, but I don't know how they differ gameplay-wise.

Ryza is mediocre. Unlike most other Ateliers, it uses an ATB combat system, which isn't really to my taste, but your preferences may vary.

Ayesha's alchemy system sucks. The rest of the game is top-tier, if a little obviously low-budget, but it would kind of be a shame to get into the alchemy series with a game that has bad alchemy. It does set you up for playing Escha/Logy, which has good alchemy, so there is that.

"Choose the game with the cutest girl" is generally a pretty good heuristic for Atelier, so you're on the right track. The game quality doesn't vary that much from release to release, though each of the games are better or worse at different things.

I'm starting the believe this. I played 4 Goddesses Online, a spin-off title first and yeah, it's repetitive and made on the cheap but I saw the point: it's there to perpetuate the series and put the characters in a fun scenario. Then I played Re;Birth 1 expecting a bit more production value and actually got less. If it weren't for the free DLC that trivialized level grinding I would have given up.

Sophie 2 is the regarded as the best in the series. I'm playing Sophie 1 at the moment and it's ok, but you have to like the alchemy or the girls to really want to continue.
If you're just looking for a new jrpg to sink time into you should probably just play Sophie 2

Ryza is a goddess

i saw that they came out with the ryza trilogy
what separates it from the original releases?

It really comes down to how much you like the alchemy. I'll admit that the majority of these games with a more standard form of JRPG progression instead of alchemy would be terrible. Hell, I think Sophie 1 is a terrible game as it already is. I think only Sophie 2 would still stand up as a standard JRPG.

2 Atelier threads right now, wow.

I haven't played the Ryza games and I haven't played Atelier Ayesha either but because the Ryza games are more recent games and Atelier games are often divided in sub-series or trilogies, yeah, I'd say that the first Ryza game should be a good place to start if you have never played an Atelier game before.

The only Atelier games I've played are Ryza, which I only played for Ryza's thighs. I didn't care for Ryza 3. I don't know if I'd bother playing any other Atelier games.
