Nobody wants that shit. Just make the RPG mechanics half decent. Hell, mods will probably fix that RPG aspect because of how easy it is to mod. I rather they focus on stuff you can't really fix with mods like quest design and world design.

Oblivion's melee combat is worse than Skyrim's. It's magic system is more EFFECTIVE than Skyrim's, but not as fun. It's more efficient than Skyrim's, but again, not as fun. The Magic system from either game needs a serious overhaul though. Todd really needs to overhaul that shit for TES6.

That'd be bad. If anything they should ditch 3rd person entirely and go all in on immersion and world simulation. Pull back on realism and trying to be graphically impressive, Add back climbing and flying along with other movement options, do more daily life sim elements, make the player interact more with disease, injury, and survival requirements, have a dynamic reputation system, have most NPCs just be archetypes with a scattering of important named characters for each town or city.

Directional attacks are good for flavor and immersion but outside of multiplayer/human focused combat the actual mechanics where they're required to do damage become more tedious than anything and make warriors feel weaker than other builds because they'll be the only ones who need to whack around a bandits shield, where as mages and thieves can just one shot them.

I'd be fine with a combat system as simple as Skyrims as long as the general mechanics of immersion around that simple combat were more immersive. Severe bleeding and broken bones, poison or venom, your exhaustion, the quality of your weapons against the quality of the enemies. I'd rather have a simple combat system that rewards attacking particular weak spots on an enemy or inflicting status ailments than a complex one where you're ultimately just doing a lot more work to bash someones body.

What makes the combat in these games feel like shit, is how Bethesda implements blocking. It just feels terrible when you swing a weapon and an enemy blocks it. And it happens on almost every fucking swing. You never really get the feeling that you are swinging your weapon at enemies and doing damage. That's why they felt the need to implement the "cinematic kills" to actually make it feel badass because otherwise it feels like shit.

Because there is so much blocking, combat entirely revolves around reducing the enemy block, which means you have to shout all the time or power attack every swing. it feels terrible. I understand that blocking is a normal part of melee combat, and I guess it might be realistic, but that doesn't mean it's fun to play.
