he rejects goyslop hence he's superior to most devs

john blow has more genius in his left pinky then you will ever know!
>>
Honestly it's kind of based that he declared war on tech debt and unoptimized slop, but I sadly don't think he's the guy to revolutionize game development
>>
>>727788890
Braid is boring and annoying to play. Storytelling through a bunch of bookreading sucks too. The witness was better but nothing earthshattering its like a 7/10 game maybe

didn't someone make a perfect copy of that line-drawing game of his, in like a few months, in unity? and then he got mad because he had worked on it for years

devs who write game engines from scratch to feel superior are braindead

Obligatory:

He never got over this.
>>
>>727788890
Can we all admit that most popular indies from the Live Arcade/Wiiware era was kinda shit? Braid, Fez, Bit.Trip series, Limbo, they were all only liked because it was a novelty at the time.

Why Bit.Trip though? It was just pure rhythm game gameplay.
>>
>>727788890
>thinks he's god's gift to video games
He never implied this. You made this assumption yourself because you're desperate to hate him for whatever reason.
>>
>>727788890
He's been making games since the 90's and most of them have failed, he's in his mid 50's. His dad is some rich former defense contractor who bankrolled his entire career. The first game he made was Wulfram which nobody remembers.
>>
>people bitch about braid being up it's own ass
>when it's perfectly possible to completely ignore the story (it's a single room of books you can run through each chapter) and focus on the gameplay, which the game is basically nothing but
>when you get down to it the only actually bad things are during the bonus star stuff with the two hour cloud bit and the one puzzle that can force a full game restart if you finished it too early

>but instead everyone complaining about braid complains because they saw what could easily be treated as a puzzle platformer and treated like it was trying to be high art
>everyone complaining about braid ultimately are making the same mistake Jon Blow makes
>>

Did he even see it?
>>
>>727790538
>it's good if you ignore this one aspect of the game
always a retarded defense. games get judged based on the whole game, not just one part of the game.
>>

>launches *a game you like*
>looks at wall for four hours
>"the game sucks because of the part where I didn't do anything but look at a wall for four hours"
>>
>>727789678
You are correct. Most of them were glorified Flash games with a price tag.
>>
>>727791015
we're not talking about staring at a wall, we're talking about playing the game the way that it was intended to be played

The "one part of the game" is 99% of the game.
>>727791098
Which is still primarily about doing time-manipulation puzzles.
>>
>>727790538
>>727791785
>why do people say that the music in this game sucks when you can just mute it
>>
>>727790748
Reading is not gameplay, no matter how much RPGfags try to pretend otherwise. Story doesn't matter.
>>
Witness was good but not that good.
While everyone praised it for incorporating its environment into puzzles it actually was the field where the game failed the most. Only 4 or 5 of all the game's segments relied on this, everything else felt way too detached and artificial. Unironically The Looker was better in this aspect.
>>
>>727791098
>intended
it gives you the same freedom to stop and read those books as any FPS gives you to stare at a wall for four hours.
>>
>>727791230
Sounds fun. What's the game called?
>>
>>727791964
But Braid has good music. And the thing I'm saying can be ignored is literally self-contained to a single room per chapter. So it isn't constantly present in the game like music is.
>>
>>727790538
>and the one puzzle that can force a full game restart if you finished it too early
anyone have more info on this? neither google nor chatgpt yielded anything on the matter
>>
>>727791964
Because it plays on it's own and you have to mute it yourself.
>>
>>727790482
>most of them have failed
your average game dev would kill to have 2 critically acclaimed games like blow has.
>>
>>727791230
>>727791486
Never in the history of video games has there been a more damning verbal evisceration
>>
>>727792471
If I recall correctly of the stars requires arranging a jigsaw puzzle in the hub world so that a platform in the jigsaw puzzles is in a position to jump on so you can get somewhere.

Problem is. If you finish the jigsaw puzzle the game doesn't let you arrange the pieces anymore so you're no longer able to place that piece with the platform on it. Which means if you want to get that star you end up having to do a full restart of the game.

It's not that he is wrong about it.
It's that he's fucking autistic.

Sorry, but your own language won't ever gain the user numbers to produce proper feedback for improvement, let alone an actual engine, and even less a real game.

It doesn't fucking matter if he is "right in principle" when his principles can't produce results.

Guy seems like a prime Gen-X know-it-all.
Very specialized knowledge in his field, yet opinions on fuckin everything.

>>727793316
thank you, i appreciate the explanation
>>
>>727789678
For me, the modern indie scene started with Legend of Grimrock.
Then nothing for like 5 years.
Then a bunch of highly involved autism simulators like factorio or terraria.
And then friendslop.
>>
>>727791230
Soulja Boy was right.
Braid was one of those original onions games by artsy onions devs that decided "losing is unfun :(" and too videogamey anyways so they give you unlimited time travel and no lose state.
>>
i cant be the only one that thought braid was just a quirky time-puzzle game? blow's vision aside, the game can't be that deep
>>
>>727793657
Not being able to solve the puzzle is a lose state anon.
>>
>>727791405
Completely untrue
>>
>>727793791
it's technically a state of limbo, which is fitting for tim's predicament
>>
>>727789678
Calling it the "Live Arcade/Wiiware era", already suggests you're doing it a disservice by not looking at pc indies.
>>

Grimrock games are a miracle of the universe. And we're blessed for experiencing it. Demanding more of it is understandable but entitled.
>>
>>727793705
the actual game is mario 1 with sands of time/ blinx the time sweeper powers
the story is very pretentious but can mostly be ignored
>>
>>727791367
It's actually pretty good desu.
>>
>>727789678
Were you struggling to remember XBL titles?
Bit. Trip is a solid series and doesn't belong there.
You could have replaced it with State Of Decay or Deadlight.
>>
AIN'T GOT NO POINT TO THE GAME
>>
>>727793990
was his game even any good, I never bothered playing it cause it seemed very geared towards people like himself that get way into zachtronics stuff and/or factorio which just isn't my vibe at all
>>
>>727789678
Bit Trip games were kino
Braid, in all honesty, is a pretty good game if you just ignore how up his own ass Blow is. Frankly the more pretentious shit didn't start hindering his games until the witness
and this is ignoring all the other old school XBLA-era indie games that were just genuine gems like bastion, world of good, plants vs zombies etc.
>>
>>727795134
>>727791230
the funniest part is that he either does get the story and is just shitposting by pretending he doesn't, or he genuinely doesn't (or more likely doesn't care) and yet somehow managed to succinctly describe it anyway

Bud Red Head > Braid
>>
I know it's a weeb site but making a sokoban is plain retarded. The game is gonna flop harder than his Braid remake.
In this oversaturated market people are craving novelty - something that made Braid and Witness stand out back in their time.

When you have a bunch of whiny grifter faggots like him who keep complaining about everything in the world instead of teaching you just know it'll keep going downhill more and more, totally deserved.
>>
>>727800587
I agree with this, except I would just say 'one' of the best games of all time for the Witness. It is crazy how much of a let down Braid was after I played the Witness.
