If i wanted to develop my own indie game what would be the best art style to use without the game being called something like retro/pixel slop?
If you're going to do something amateurish, and it's not to showcase your artistic style, then the most important thing is to do something simple and unpretentious. One of the few right things Yanderedev did was to use simple assets from the Unity Store.Note that of all the criticism of his game, almost none is about the art itself. Yes, they are standard characters from a cheap anime character pack that a lot of people use, so the graphics are not original, but they are honest enough to do the job, they don't steal attention from what the game is really about, and they didn't give the creator any extra work.
