Is PC Gaming just a rich man hobby at this point? How did we get to this? I thought gaming specifically PC gaming was a niche sub-culture

the games that actually constitute PC gaming (fps, rts, 4x, moba, competitive games in general) can run on any potato.

paying hundreds/thousands extra to play AAA consoleslop at higher framerates was always a meme, now it's just expensive enough that even the autists are realizing it's not worth it. a ps5 is $400 right fucking now, if i wanted to play ass creed and cyberslop i'd just go get that.

>paying hundreds/thousands extra to play AAA consoleslop at higher framerates was always a meme
In the late PS3/360 era it was a huge difference playing on even an entry level rig. Every single game coming out was upscaled 720p and 22 frames per second but a $400 rig could max it out. This coincided with steam sales gaining popularity and MOBAs getting huge on college campuses. Then the PS4/XBO launched in an underpowered state where building a PC for around the same price was arguably a better deal.

Now things are regressing back to how they were before. The PS5 has amazing performance for its cost, graphics have plateaued in most games, and PC component prices are through the roof.

Get a $500-600 Chinese Mini PC from Amazon, but make sure to do a clean install of Windows when it arrives to clear out any potential malware. You could install Bazzite instead if you want.

1080p was common after 2010, PS4/XBO came out at the very end of 2013.

Also most late PS3-gen games weren't real 720p, they were like 540p with a vaseline filter and still low 20s fps.

>>727793579
>The PS5 has amazing performance for its cost
The PS5 defers its costs to its subscriptions and controllers, which doubles or triples its total price. It has terrible performance for its total cost, since it is a 3060 equivalent and the console itself is likely approaching EoL with NOGAEMS.
>graphics have plateaued in most games
Since Graphics have plateaued, you don't need the newest hardware just to keep up with budget console components.
>PC component prices are through the roof.
Just don't buy components when they are expensive. If I cherrypicked scalped PS5 prices, it also wouldn't look favorable.
>>
>Is PC Gaming just a rich man hobby at this point?
Fuck no, I could build 5 high end PC's for what one of these costs
>>
Everyone who bought the 9070 or 9060 got lucky, not only are they ready for the Linux transition, GPUs with that much memory will cost a lot more from now on. They should also be good enough for 1080p for close to 10 years if you don't mind dropping settings in the last few years
>>
PC is about $200/year. It's the absolute cheapest hobby there is. People used to socialize and go out drinking before extreme poverty became the norm. $200 would have been weekly expenses.

>The original Mirror's Edge on Xbox 360 natively renders at 720p, but it was often displayed at 1080p by the console's built-in scaler

>Stuntman: Ignition on Xbox 360 supports various resolutions, including HDTV 720p, 1080i, and 1080p, with the game often targeting 720p natively but scaling to your console's display settings

PS6 is probably delayed to 2030 now.
PS5 can live off the stock they have, but a PS6 would need to buy better DRAM chips, and that's just not a thing at the moment.
Which is in my view is a good thing, a 2030 PS6 would have a much bigger chance to actually impress than a PS5 pro pro.

It's a huge deal. They were HALF of the consumer laptop memory, 1/3rd of consumer desktop memory, and 1/3rd of flash storage (SSDs). Nigger.
Also the US taxpayer spent 8.4 billion ensuring they'd move 40% of their production capacity to the US just for them to now stop selling to consumers. Hyper jew behavior.

>>
>>727798654
The chinks literally build a factory already and it's spinning up, now we wait to see if they can make good memory chips.

As for Micron selling memory chips, they don't give a shit what you use the chips for. Now it could be possible they have sold all their future supply as far as they are willing to already so they literally couldn't sell you any right now, but that doesn't mean someone couldn't buy some of their future supply and make consumer sticks

Why would they sell equipment to their competitors? They like working together to set pricing so they don't want new competition undercutting them
>>
>>727801761
No, they're just colluding to raise prices like they have already been convicted of doing before.
The ram companies can increase production to meet demand, like they did during covid, but they won't.
Because they were left holding the bag when that ended and there was an oversupply of chips.

I'd rather play with 10 fps less than let Windows spy on everything I do on my PC

No??? What? These three companies got caught a few years ago conspiring to price fix the NAND/RAM market and got in trouble for it. So they started doing it openly which is somehow legal. They all agreed to stop selling old fab equipment to China to maintain a monopoly on the market and control of pricing to maximize profits. Go check out Micron's stock valuation. It is gone up 900% since COVID because of this price fixing/control of manufacturing with SK Hynix and Samsung. Micron is an American company and SK Hynix/Samsung are a Korean company. Neither want China to undercut their monopoly and they realized the risks of letting China produce older memory once covid hit. The Trump administration's fear of China allowed them to get away with warehousing old lithographic equipment and still make money.
GENUINELY THIS IS THE APOCALYPSE FOR HOME COMPUTING. Normal people have yet to freak out but you should be panicking. It is genuinely the end of it. A select few elite will own all computing and you'll just rent it form them from now on. Today it is marketed as (((AI))) but tomorrow it will be literally everything. All devices will be IoT style thin clients with the bare minimum compute to maintain a network connection and you'll be always online to do literally anything from driving a car to gaming. Hold on to your compute and old cars. They are the last generation of computing freedom.

CachyOS is K I N O
There is no other alternative. It is even better than SteamOS for gaming and it has full support for Nvidia, even DLSS/Raytracing works on it now. The time to switch is now.
>>
>>727802257
it's crazy how most people don't understand the consequences of this.

>THIS IS THE APOCALYPSE FOR HOME COMPUTING
this is what I'm afraid of. A world where you can't just own a computer, but rent some super surveilled cloud shit through NK-style castrated dumb terminals
>>
>>727802330
Nah, just put that Nvidia support to SteamOS
>>
>give friend my old pc

Nope. Having fun GAMING on my new RTX 3060 12gb. Playing Elden Ring on max settings and having a blast. You don't need a 5090 to have fun.

AI is just a plot by chyna to make America go bankrupt like America did for the USSR with the space race and star wars.
And so far, America is jumping in the trip heads first. Greed is a very easy way to subvert someone. Doubly so if America.

True. All that matters is that it's Nvidia and you can just upgrade once a decade.

I didn't want to upgrade but I'm a pessimist and expect things to get a lot worse.
>>
>>727807501
It is going to get worse. OpenAI is already hinting they are going to need a bailout.
>>
>>727807626
I see no reason why they should be bailed out

They shouldn't get a bail out, but they will get a bail out.

3060 (my beloved) can run anything that's not AAA slop on high to max settings 1440p 60fps. Hell, it can even run cyberpunk on high at those settings.
