It's fun.
Nice to see Krieg boys in it.
>>
Did they actually do literally any level design at all this time around? If it's just the same as last game there's no point in playing it
>>
>>739360750
Is it out yet?
>>
>>739360750
is it actually a proper FPS this time or is it still a serious sam-like?

How come Doom used clay models for the demons and it looked fine but this uses official minis and it looks like total ass. Is it the garbage patented GW edge highlighting where they highlight every single edge there is? I can't quite put my finger on it.
>>
>>739360850
Why don't you play the demo and tell the thread if they designed levels instead of arenas?
>>
>>739360981
nice try mr. marketer. I wait for someone else to waste their time with this shit
>>
last game was shit
what's different this time?
>>
>>739361038
A new player character seems to be the main thing, but other than that, more enemy types but unless the devs improve certain things from first game nethier matters that much
>>
>>739361153
What certain things? I thought the first game was pretty good.
>>
>>739361225
arena shooter with hp sponge enemies. same thing thats wrong with nu-doom
>>
>>739361225
Boring level design, and uninteresting enemy encounter design are the main things, just adding stuff won't make a game better if it's dragged down by such issues
>>
I just want ONE of these retro FPS games to be good. Just fucking one. They're all terrible. Dusk, Prodeus, Boltgun, Graven, Ion Fury, Ultrakill, Amid Evil, HROT, Project Warlock, CULTIC and I could go on.

Jesus just give me fucking ONE.
>>
>>739360953
>I can't quite put my finger on it.
Old good, new bad.
>>
>>739361225
The level design is some of the worst I've ever seen. There's such limited differentiation. You'd swear almost every level was the same
>>
>>739361336
Anon you just might not like the genre....
>>
>>739361336
its not even a retro fps game. its a very modern shooter that just looks like shit
>>
>>739361336
anon could you give an example of a Retro Shooter that you think is good?
since right now the problem might be that you just don't like this genre of game
>>
>>739361336
From the ones you posted I played Boltgun and Cultic. I found Cultic to be pretty good, but somewhat repetitive in the later levels. Boltgun the same, dropped it after a few hours.
>>
>>739361336
>I just want ONE of these retro FPS games to be good
Not possible. The format is obsolete and you've played much better FPS games from the past couple of decades. Retro FPS just can't compete anymore.
>But what about OLD GAME
Nostalgia.
>>
>>739361363
>Old good, new bad.
that's usually the case, yes. Especially with nostalgia shooters.
>>
This entire game could have just been a dlc

It's actually more Serious Sam-like than the first game. The 2nd demo level has dudes charging at you with explosive barrels.
There's actually significant mechanical change in the demo from BOLTGUN. It's a 4gb download and no longer than a 2hr demo. Try it nerd.
>>
>>739361336
dusk, hrot and cultic are pretty good. the first project warlocks alright. not really a big fan of the others

fallout bakersfield might be good
>>
>>739361336
Prodeus was good though. Some annoying enemy types but fun overall
>>
>>739361491
which part of that post made you think I'd want to play a serious sam-like?

Yeah there's too much lighting information and detail in general in the characters in Boltgun, the pixel density of the characters is radically higher than the environments and the colour palletes of the minis clashes with the environment.

Doom ends up looking like sprites in a game, it's all very cohesive, it works together, Boltgun ends up looking like cardboard cutouts of a photograph plopped into some other game.

There's lots of examples of it from back in the boomer shooter days where devs thought more detail and higher resolution characters would look better but it actually ends up looking shit.

In a way it was perhaps the first uncanny valley we crossed, Bungie's sprites were especeially bad. Marathon and the Myth games were both terrible in that respect, despite being amazing games, Rise of the Triad did it, Redneck Rampage also suffered from it. Whereas Duke 3D, Blood, Shadow Warrior all understood the importance of good art that all worked together.

The texture resolution of the sprites. The enemies in Boltgun look like paper cut-outs, whereas the enemies in Doom matched the detail level of the environment. Helps that doom doesn't stretch terrain textures since it just uses flat walls
>>
boltgun was probably the most disappointing 'boomer shooter' I've played, it's the definition of style over substance, looks great, the guns feel great to shoot, but everything else is either mediocre or 'what?' levels of bad

level design was okay, and I mean you can't go wrong with warhammer aesthetics, it looked great, but the movement itself was meh; trying to access those hanging platforms were a pain in the ass because of how floaty air movement is on top of how poorly designed vaulting was

the enemies look good but there's both so little variation to them, and there's barely any fucking feedback when you shoot at them, most of them also had such poorly telegraphed attacks that you'd sometimes get hit and not even realize it, you're boltering a plague toad's face and yet it's still able to tongue your ass

melee? why? rather, melee as a space marine; yes, but why the fuck is it working the way it was?
more often than not, again, enemies can fuck you up as you're chainsawing their faces, so why ever doing it? why would I ever want to use melee?

the fucking str system for your weapons; why?
past mid games it comes to the point where your fucking bolter and shotgun become pointless, so why the fuck are they in the game?
and again, no feedback, you're supposed to know or guess what enemy is resistant to what weapons, no sound feedback, no visual feedback, just ass

boltgun 1 was made by artists that never touched a FPS game in their life, or if they did, it was doom fourty years ago and forgot what it was meant to play like
>>
>>739362127
oh fuck, and now I remember the fucking champions running at you in melee and how fucking awful and awkward it was to fight them, like you had to melee them before they hit you and then jump away to shoot at them more, rinse and repeat 4-8 times until they die; why
who the fuck made this and were like 'oh yeah that's a good gameplay loop, let's make it'
>>
>>739362127
>you're supposed to know or guess what enemy is resistant to what weapons
Anon the enemies show their level of Toughness, all you need to do is match with a weapon with a equal or higher Str, its not that complicated
>>
>>739362345
may as well just go full RPG shooter at that point instead just stopping there just to make a mess of a standard shooter weapon loadout

>COME FORTH, BLAS-FEMURS
For all the GWSsimps "fighting the chuds" on social media about the inclusion of a Sister of Battle in Boltgun 2, they really don't seem to understand the actual problem with lazily tacking a Sister of Battle on a Space Marine's game as a secondary character.
As a le evil chud who actual likes the SoB, I think they deserve better than that. It's always just lazy inclusions like DLCs or shit like this. How about actually making a legitimate Sisters of Battle game that isn't a DLC campaign in an RTS, being an optional secondary character in someone else's boomer shooter, or a gimmicky VR game? No? Just the bare minimum for the actually cool women in 40K you claim to care so much for on social media? K.
>>
>>739362416
Who are you talking to?
>>
>>739362345
can you show me a single fps game that people would call good or popular with such a retarded armor system?
am I playing stalker here or am I playing a boomer shooter?

>number is right there next to their health
nigga who the fuck looks at the enemy health bar, it's still a fucking garbage system if someone plays through the game without figuring it out or caring about it because, again, at some point through you just end up only using all the other weapons rather than the bolter because 'what if we made the bolter the shittiest weapon in the world looool'

anyways, I have 0 hope in boltgun 2 now, unless it turns out the whole team got fired and new devs came in
>>
>>739362404
maybe next game will go full Hexen and have the Player level up, but right now it seems like Boltgun just gives specific ability and weapon loadouts to the different characters.
wonder what character they would even bother with next
Grey Knights, Custodes?

Whats wrong with Amid Evil?
>>
>>739364357
It pretends to be Heretic/Hexen without anything that made them good(bad), i.e. obtuse intricate map design and progression. And the visuals are not as good either.
tl;dr it's an inferior copy of a superior original, just like every single boomer shooter
>>
>>739360750
I'm not playing as a woman. Enjoy your AGPcore wokehammer garbage.
>>
>>739362612
Looking at the gameplay for Boltgun 2, they seem to have gotten rid of the Weapon Strength vs Toughness mechanics, or at least made it hidden from the player
>>
>>739360953
Boltgun uses digitized 3d models not minis.
>>
>>739364570
Seriously? I liked that a lot about the first one. I thought the first one was mid (parts of it were pretty good) but I really liked that. If they've removed it I'm certainly not getting #2.
>>
>>739364760
>larping nigger
>>
>>739364760
i can't see it on UI anywhere, so maybe, but they could have just hidden it from the player rather than made it obvious with numbers
>>
>>739361336
Upvoted.
>>
>>739364484
>pretends to be Heretic/Hexen
cmon man the literal only similarity is being a fantasy boomer shooter with magic weapons
>>
>>739361336
What is 'good' to you?
What would one need for you to deem them good?
If you can only complain but can't provide examples of what they need to be better, what the fuck are you doing playing them in the first place?
>>
>>739360953
Entirely possible because of the colour palette. Older games had a more limited colour palette available to them. More colours being available means more transitions so they end up looking too defined compared to older sprites.
