The game is really good if and only if you accept that it's not a 3D platformer, it's a 3D pinball game where you input specific moves in order to maximize your vertical/horizontal reach. This was somewhat the case with Beebz's games. Her moveset was a means to get a slight edge out whenever you performed the launch move, integral to optimized play. In contrast to Odyssey-likes, where the focus is on essentially ignoring the level design to master aerial "tech" Bubsy is a constant game of tug-and-war. You're having to fight between focusing on the many options in Bubsy's large kit or just say fuck it and abuse the undeniably OP hairball form at risk of getting knocked all over the place.As an example, you can use the crouch jump and twirl jump to get further then you would with the pounce and flutter, respectively. But if you have enough space provided you can do basically anything with the hairball. This can be seen in 1-4 where the first section of the stage can be skipped entirely provided you commit to going all the way. Herein lies my personal problem with Bubsy 4D: The interplay is not bolstered by the level design. If anything, it's kneecapped. Every single stage is a series of islands separated by massive empty space, and so plenty of potential opportunities for huge skips are just out of reach. The tubes are also so tall that they can't function as half pipes half of the time, which you'd think would be their secondary purpose beyond bringing you between the segments.I also cannot stress enough how frustrating the yarn placement is. The original Bubsy was a collectathon in disguise, everyone who has played it picked up on this. Engaging with it in earnest meant picking up everything and getting a high score. Because Bubsy 4D is fundamentally a speedrun game first and foremost, it doesn't know what to do with the levels besides litter them a few trinkets and call it a day. Still, for $20 it's fine enough.
