chud-coded streamer I watch mentioned /v/ and I wanted to check it out. The idea of congregating with actual nerds who aren't insane lefty troons was appealing.
I started on /v/ and branched out to /tv/ and /wsg/ for when doomscrolling youtube got old.
/tv/ is one of the worst boards on this site, but it was cool seeing a thread on a niche movie I had just watched days before and had literally never heard anyone talk about online or irl. I felt like I truly was surrounded by people who were on the same wavelength as me, and it felt awesome. The people weren't retarded and could give genuine insights on obscure media like Etrian Odyssey and it was from people who actually played the shit. The site seemed to be mostly free from the influence of the algorithm, but there is a lot of crossposting from X. Eventually, I got diminishing returns as the site lost its novelty and while the shitposting and imageboard format catered to my autistic sense of humor and references to random lines from games and movies, seeing the same memes and bait posts got annoying. I even noticed a lot of the insights I saw would just be parroted, so the amount of original thought on here is lacking than I originally thought. I should stop visiting before my brain becomes complete mush from lack of nuance and /pol/brainrot. I liked having original thoughts that I would then read on here, but now it feels like all my thoughts and opinions come from /v/ (and the streamer who brought me here who also has no original thoughts because he is just /v/ incarnate) which is not good

I still come here because I can't stand how every other site requires walking on eggshells about so many topics now. I'm a very left-leaning guy socioeconomically, but also a christfag, so sites like reddit where everything is in extremes feel awful to use. Plus I hate all forms of upvoting and most sites have that now. Forums are super slow now because most people have centralized on sites like reddit or in discord servers.

I've been on and off 4chan and various other boards since 2012 or so, but I think it was late 2010s-early 2020s that I started to actually come to /v/. Previously I just went to /vp/ and /x/.
More or less for the same reasons I stated already, I don't post much and only skim the catalogue every other day or so. Most of /v/ these days is just a bunch of third worlders shitposting in bad English about groups of people they don't like with a rare interesting thread here and there so it isn't like I'm missing much.

I used to browse YTMND forums and then Facepunch in the mid 2000s. Particularly with the latter, I got sick of people's post counts going their heads. When Garry introduced gold memberships which gave you early access to GMod builds, the ego of people that had that badge on their profile was unbelievable. There were those fags that replied to EVERY thread even if they had nothing of value to say just to get their post count up, which showed up right underneath their names.
So I just wanted something completely anonymous. No one's going to go back to your old posts from a year ago to show you contradicting yourself.
I prefer the chaotic anonymity with no accountability of this place.

I mean it's nothing like 2007 4chan and not even close, but at least it hasn't been politicked into silence like every other webchat platform after 2015. 2015 was when the EU and US Democrats decided to start attempting to use internet for censorship, and decided to force platform providers to lay down rules of behavior. That alone ruined the open internet, and 4chan's just held on.

The nonjudgmentalism, and letting users say what they want is important. I used to hate 4chan and it would've been my least used site, but I've "resorted" to going here after the other places were ruined by Moderation policies. If 4chan disappears I'll probably slowly stop using the internet at all. And I won't be jumping on any AI bandwagon either. The fascination is gone.

Honestly for all the ups and downs I've seen in this place, I'm not going to pretend this place hasn't gotten massively worse and near-unusable at certain times over the last 10-12 years. /v/'s split over a dozen boards because the admins wouldn't do their jobs and thought they could solve this problem by subdividing /v/ into lower population forks that would in theory require less moderation since each individual prong on the fork would have less but higher quality posters in it since it required navigating away from the main board and had lower response times.

Before captchas were introduced, I think in 2014 or so, there was times when every single board was filled with gigantic walls of spam you had to wade through. I disagree. Things like /v/ The Musical came from the post-2011 era and are my favorite things about this shithole. I personally think GG, the fappening, moot leaving, and the presidential election shifted things more than anything else. All of 4chan, and especially /v/, have felt way more culture-warry since.
