>zoomers have no games so they shit on ones they never played
>>
>>740470697
Boomers probably played the original Donkey Kong if any.
>>
everyone shit on dk64 actually
>>
There are aspects of it that can be good even if there were other things that weren't the best ideas. I dont know why everything has to be either good or bad and no inbetween
>>
>>740470697
dk64 was good
the only issues it had were a few minigames/bananas being poorly tuned, and needing to go back to barrels to swap instead of being able to swap anywhere
>>
>>740471161
Because low IQ people are incapable of dealing with nuance.
>>
>>740471232
they designed the swap barrels for a reason
>>
>>740470697
I quite enjoyed it and never got the complaints about it. But it was a burrowed game, and I never finished it before I had to return it.
>>
Boomers don't play video games, they watch football
>>
>>740470850
I'm a gen x boomer and one of the first video games I ever played was the original donkey kong arcade. The Dkc games came out in high school/college. When dk64 came out I had no interest because I hated the whole n64 and ps1 era because every game was so janky and I was used to polished 8 and 16 bit games.
>>
>>740471703
>gen x
>boomer
So you're gen X, not boomer.
>>
>>740471484
the reason was flawed
they could have locked swapping in levels to switches/puzzles/minibosses as better alternatives instead of the insane levels of backtracking
>>
>>740470697
Doesn't this game have a memory leak?
>>
>>740470697
No one thinks it is trash. Everyone just notices and calls out the obvious padding out of game length by adding collectibles that can only be collected by specific characters, requiring constant unnecessary backtracking.
>>
>>740470697
it has some good, it has some bad.
>>
>>740471814
Insane is an hyperbole, I would believe it if you played it as a kid (I had that cart at my tens) as it's overwhelming when doing poorly routed runs (personal experience), but now that feeling vanished after revisiting last year and it felt good. There are some sour spots like the beaver minigame, the races and Lanky's part of the final boss, but the hate this game has is overblown.
>>
>>740470892
The narrative is basically this:

>DK64 comes out NintenFILTEREDWORD over value it cause MUH BRAND.
>Head cool during the 2000s onmce the N64 i sno longer the LATEST THING and people realize all the backtracking and tedium.
>Around the time of 2010 more and more people realize that swapping characters with Emulator Cheats makes the game better.
>By the time of 2020 the cheats have been steamlined and Swap Everywhere Mod happens and people shill "DK64 is good ackshully".
>DK64 releases on shit that doesn't have the mod.
>"Wait a minute, this is PISSSSS!"

It is basically Xers VS Early Yers VS Late Yers VS Zers in a sense.
>>
>>740471871
No, that was dismissed by a dev (forgot who said that), the expansion pak was for the crazy lighting effects.
>>
>>740470806
They have cod20 and other casual slop like Fortnite.
>>
>>740472036
>Xers Yers Zers
Are those your preferred pronouns?
>>
>>740472036
Everyone using the mod is a pleb that didn't beat the game, worse than savestates, also this game emulated like shit for a long time so that made for some bad impressions.
>>
>>740470697
DK64 isn't quite as good as either Banjo game for me. But I do consider Frantic Factory and Creepy Castle as highlights.

Nah, but i knew it'd get this comment and figured it might make you chuckle.

>>740472208
Fair enough, and yeah that would definitly help influence the bad impression during the 00s. It also also had a SA Hitpiece LP, but that's Eceleb bullshit. My point was more that DK64 hasn't exactly had a stable consensus on itself all things considered.
>>
>>740471757
I'm a gen x boomer
>>
>game was criticized by others during the time if you werent a child
>ur just baiting cause bored
shit thread.
>>
>>740472304
I just recently beat the recomp of Banjo and I can tell you I am having far far more fun with DK64.
It's so much deeper and wonderous. You can tell Banjo is meant for your 8 year old to play whereas DK64 is more for your 12 year old
>>
I enjoyed DK64 a lot when I was a kid, but I would never replay it in a million years. Not even with the swap anywhere mod.
>>
I zoned out at Hideout Helm and forgot to grab a Banana Medal, now cursing my save file to forever be stuck at 99%.
>>
>>740472950
I absolutely adore DK64's vibe and atmosphere. But I still think the level design and pacing in Kazooie is more consistently solid throughout, though.
>>
just beat Creepy Castle, will probably finish it up tomorrow

How's the rabbit race?
>>
>>740472101
Anon, he already said no games.
>>
>>740470697
it's one of my all time favorite games actually
>>
>>740478663
A lot easier once you know about the trick that lets you jump into the orangsprint barrel before the race starts.
>>
>>740479716
I mean in the Switch version specifically. The Wii U one was nearly impossible unless he got stuck on the Kasplat.
>>
>>740471814
>the reason was flawed
it's not, it's a dandori game where you're to explore and memorize
the only reason people are swearing by the tag anywhere romhack is because attention span has absolutely plummeted like you wouldn't believe
>>
>>740471984
it's not padding, it's the game
you're supposed to remember where things are and plan effective routing

The timeline is basically this:

>game comes out to raving reviews about how awesome it is
>people steal the game and emulate it over the years and this leads to frame pacing issues
>people criticize how broken the game feels
>zoomer streamer youtube generation suffers massive drop in attention span
>people now start thinking the entire game is flawed in execution because it goes against their brain chemistry
>people either write the game off or they modify the game to play completely differently and swear by this being the only way to play
>>
>>740480124
Oh, It played just like the n64 version without any frame drops so I think they fixed it.
>>
It was fine. A first time player is basically gonna play through each level five times which is a bit tedious but nothing too bad. Has some horrendous mini games though. Don't know what they were thinking with Beaver Bother
>>
>>740480187
There's nothing fun about slogging through the same level as every character, especially since the movement doesn't feel good, there's no freedom or expressiveness like in a Mario 64. It would be one thing if each character controlled radically differently and their unique moves were the only way to reach a collectable, but no, they're mostly the same and instead the collectables are lazily and arbitrarily color coded so the other characters can't get them. It's just padding, the devs themselves are on record stating that they wanted to make the biggest game they could that it would take eons to complete because kids in the 90s only rarely got to have a new game so this would last them as long as possible.

dk64 has always been considered bad, it's only with the rise of braindead contrarianism on the internet these past few years that there's been attempts to rehabilitate it

there's a reason why the donkey kong franchise had troubles staying relevant for a very long time while other historical nintendo series thrived, it's because they completely bungled the transition to 3D
>>
>>740482523
It's a lot of fun to explore the levels and each character has different abilities and personality, the approach to things completely change.
>the devs themselves are on record stating that they wanted to make the biggest game they could
and they succeeded for that era, the game is awesome

DK64 gave me a crippling fear of dark underwater locations in videogames
I never even owned an 64 as a kid, i played it at one of my parents friends place and wandering off a coastline into the dark has haunted my dreams ever since
Unless an underwater area is perfectly clear to the point it may as well be air, i can't handle it
all my friends think i'm putting it on somehow but it legit just fucks me up and i don't enjoy it at all
>>
>>740483158
I got the opposite experience just because you can breathe underwater lol.
>>
>>740483158
You can't even drown in that game you retard

>low IQ
that would be subhumans like you, who write this nonsense
