It feels more like a stealth detective game than a first person rpg, and i do not like how it feels to play on keyboard and mouse compared to the original's smooth movement and actionbut the aesthetics and soundtrack is top tier, the voice acting is goodgoing into a cutscene for a single takedown is a bit lame but its really looks cool when youre surrounded and you just do them back to back

>going into a cutscene for a single takedown is a bit lame but its really looks cool when youre surrounded and you just do them back to backIt gets old real quick. It should have been a toggle. They just could not figure out a way to not make it look weird in first person view is my guess.
>>740646007isnt it just a completely optional mechanic though, surely theres a baton or a shiv somewhere
>>740646078Sadly not. They introduced a fuckhuge stun gun at some point, not sure whether it is simply available later or requires doorectal's cut.
I know everyone hates QTE, but I honestly think the takedowns would have worked better as little QTE combos. It would be more interesting than pressing one button for an insta-win.
>>740645703masta jensen
>>740646245You get the stun gun literally in the first mission instantly if you want when Sarif asks you if you want a close range or long range weapon
>>740646568Damn, right, that useless thing exists too. I meant PEPS or however that's spelled. That one works but yeah.
I hate the whole piss-filter/Director's Cut situation. I personally have no problem with the original piss filter, but because the game is quite dated now, I wanted to remaster it with graphics mods. Unfortunately all the mods seem to require the Director's Cut version of the game, which removes the piss-filter by popular demand. So I bought that version and I thought it looked wrong. With the filter removed, you notice many places where yellow lights are baked into the textures, and without the filter to finesse the scenery, they are jarring. Some mods try to mitigate the problem, but nothing really solves it. And to be honest the graphics mods are poorly made. You can add ENB and ray tracing, but then you get visual absurdities like shiny cement and reflective carpets. I think you're better off sticking with the unmodded original, unless you really can't stand the piss filter.tl;dr: I wasted my money on the Director's Cut.
>>740645501>It feels more like a stealth detective game>no sound propagation system>cover based/line of sight detection instead of light level based>no severe penalties upon detection>you can see through walls with your trusty Smart Vision aka BATMAN vision. Although made redundant with a radar anyway so you're never at risk of not knowing where the enemy is and never have to rely on hearing and audio information aloneIt's nowhere near the caliber of Thief that's for sure and it lags behind Splinter Cell. Perhaps it's closer to Hitman or MGS in regards to stealth. But it's actually a first person RPG because even in some of those line sight of sight detection based games they can be a little harsher on detection depending on the game. The biggest mistake Human Revolution ever made was not tailoring the game to your playstyle and it made stealth playthroughs worthless if you are locked into a boss room and cannot accommodate to your approach. That you get an identical scenario to an assault playthrough. I guess that's maybe closer to MGS but it's not my preferred method. It makes the game feel shallow that my lack of being seen accounts for nothing in the story and my approach doesn't factor into the actual bosses. These boss fights were admittedly outsourced garbage anyway. But it really sent a message to me as a stealth player that it lacked focus.
did IiiiiiiIIII... interrupt your thread?
>>740645501>It feels more like a stealth detective game than a first person rpgI can see your point, but I thought it had enough mechanics still in to be a satisfying RPG over all.also I don't remember having an issue with playing it on KB+M, and yeah the takedowns mostly got annoying pretty quickly.
>>740649485>no sound propagation system>cover based/line of sight detection instead of light level basedHere we go again. Thief is an antique and its systems are extremely crude. The light system, so lavishly praised by you fanboys, is a source of unintentional comedy. Guards will pass obliviously within inches of Garret if his crystal is dark, even though you as the player can clearly see guards in those same shadows. And the crystal often won't correspond to the 3D environment. Is this dark shadowy spot safe to hide in? Crystal says no. What about this equally dark spot on the other side of the room? Crystal says yes. Why the difference? Just because. What about this well illuminated patch in the middle of the room? Crystal says it's dark and you can hide there. So you can't judge the shadows by sight, you have to rely on the arbitrary and schizophrenic crystal.

>>740653302Thief's sound propagation never impressed me. When you lure guards with noises, their responses are chaotic and unpredictable, so it's usually not worth your time. Shoot an arrow against a stone wall and the guard who investigates the sound will wander slowly and aimlessly around the general vicinity, while his footsteps ring out like thunder to remind you that yes, there is a guard walking here. And why is it that Garrett's footsteps alert them, but not the footsteps of other NPCs? How does a guard know the difference between your footsteps and those of his comrades, or those of the house servants? They live in a world of constant banging footsteps that all sound alike, but somehow they just magically know when it's Garrett. It's all bit silly, isn't it? Not to mention the scratchy, compressed quality of the sound effects and voices.

>>740645501It's an rpg, it has more choice and consequence than Disco Elysium, as well as builds and routing. You can get augments in this faster than in DX. I definitely agree though, they weren't talented enough to pull off the feeling of freedom from DX. This feels a lot more rote/scripted, like you can see the mechanics in motion more easily. But they did do a good job designing the levels, making it fun to sneak around and collect items.

>>740652659>IIRC you actually lose some of the gear you enter it with due to a bug or whateverDidn't happen to me
Prichard.
>>740659198No it's being knocked because Dishonored never did sound propagation and light based. However lets focus on sound propagation If you want to maintain the position of >erm actually light based stealth is not actually goodA misguided view and one that Arkane held because apparently "realism is more in important" (in their own words despite the game looking like playdoh stylized dogshit) then you have to at least acknowledge that Dishonored dumbed down silence focused gameplay by just giving you crouch walk instead of speed toggled walk. Because your generation never grew up with one game that had proper mechanics that shape these challenges you've always looked at mainstream garbage like Asssasins Creed as your ideal example of gameplay. What's more is that you ignore that removes all challenge with fucking batman vision garbage. That is a fundamental disgrace to stealth design.Ideally you should not know a single one of their positions.
>>740645501I just remember having to crawl through a lot of vents in office buildings
>>740658974I'm not convinced by this supposed dichotomy between Thief as a boomer game and Dishonored as a zoomer game. Dishonored came out in 2012, when people who played Thief in 1998 were aged 20-30 and still actively gaming. They played Dishonored; they were a large part of its intended audience. That's why Dishonored is full of references to Thief. And as for video essays, well, Thief is one of the staples of that genre. Mandalore, Grimbeard, Majuular and all the usual suspects have lengthy videos on Thief. It's used as a lighthouse to guide nerds towards these channels.
>>740659853Dishonored is a corporate whore product that was shilled aggressively pre and on release and received in all likelihood bought off reviews, perhaps equal to Bioshock Infinite in that regard, or even OG Bioshock for that matter since that game was artificial credentials the game. The comparison is not apt because Levine is a hack outside his time at Looking Glass Studios.Dishonored was advertised on billboards, buses, television and literally anywhere and anyone that Bethesda could shove their ad money in. It's artificial crap slurped up by zoomers.
>>740659324What else does GMDE(GMDX?) Augmented add? I remember playing it for my third DX playthrough a decade or so ago and all I remember it doing was add leaning to combat.I also remember really REALLY liking the gunplay in that, as in it's itched in my memory as the golden standard, but I can't put my finger as to why, it's been so long.
>>740659496I don't care about ''light propagation'' when all it amounts to is you can stand on the corner of a bright room to become invisible to guards, see >>740656173You keep namedropping this system when I've already shown the gameplay to be utter crap in practice>(in their own words despite the game looking like playdoh stylized dogshitThere's not a world where Thief, one of the ugliest games ever made, looks better than Dishonored. >>740660101>everything made after the 90's sucks and Thief is le best game everI can't take you seriously when you're THIS biased towards the only games you have nostalgia for
>>740660296>is utter crap practiceDishonored solution is to remove all stealth. If silence is not an aspect to stealth then the genre ultimately falls apart. You can't get around that and you cannot excuse that seeing through walls means no challenge is even involved. You've grown up with UI design that just feels natural to your eyes but you don't give a damn about what it does to challenge.
Who would ever design a stealth game and say moving slowly to avoid those moving around you is something we have to change? the moment you start running clearly everyone knows where you are. How did one generation get so confused about a game concept? the reality was that people with little patience couldn't deal with this idea although all they really actually wanted to play action game but couldn't admit it so they needed another descriptor for themes. So they co-opted the term stealth because they just wanted a story about being a steampunk ninja. They had no intention of ever delivering.
>>740645703the sequel really fucked up the animations, I'd rather have that level of voice acting for a single character instead of every character's body language being like of an actual crack addict
>>740660404>If silence is not an aspect to stealth then the genre ultimately falls apartBut sound is part of the stealth? Guards will react to you running around, react to missed crossbow shots, etc.>you cannot excuse that seeing through walls means no challenge is even involved. It's an optional power, you don't have to purchase it
>>740660101>they fucking... god I'm so mad I almost can't say it out loud... they fucking ADVERTISED it! A videogame, being advertised in broad daylight! Can you imagine?Whereas Thief, a true gamer's game, would have never have stooped so low as to be advertised anywhere. It was created in total secrecy in an underground bunker by developers who wore balaclavas at all times and referred to each other by their ID numbers, never by name. No one knew who anyone else was. Once the game was complete, it was uploaded anonymously to the darkest corners of the internet, and the bunker and all development assets were unceremoniously doused in petrol and burned. This was all done to ensure the artistic integrity of the production. A small group of elite hackers managed to find the game in its hidden location on the web, and after they had broken through the extremely tight security, they were able to get it out to the wider world, where it slowly developed a cult following. A following that grew in a purely authentic and organic way, untarnished by crass commercialism.
>>740660769>Guards will react to you running aroundBy crouching. Instead of basing it on your actual in game speed and accounting for floor surface properties. There is no distinction in floor properties in Dishonored and all sound is uniform even when running over a carpet shouldn't sound as loud as running on metal or marble flooring but in Dishonored it's all the same sound because the design is lazy. This idea didn't suddenly become primitive Arkane are just a bunch of lazy bastards. Thief is is already advanced on the conceptual level alone because there are two factors that are the deciding factor about how you are allowed to move through a level. Opposed to Dishonored where you just click teleport power onto the ceiling and then you've avoided everything? or even having silhouettes of all the patrols so you don't have to do any patrol memorization? You've basically destroyed the fundamentals of stealth design in one fell swoop no matter how you look at. Clicking crouch is not enough because that is literally a DUMB idea of being silent. It's not advanced and it's not the concept of movement.

>>740661367Any new Deus will struggle to escape the shadow of the original, because that game was made under unusual circumstances and it overdelivered in a way we just don't see anymore. At least, not in a niche genre like immersive sims. The game is long, vast, packed with little details, and uncommonly well written. It somehow manages to be both cool and charmingly dorky at the same time, a quality typified by its cheesy-but-good theme music. We'd all like another game like that, but it's a tall order for modern developers who haven't been handed a blank cheque by an industry mogul.Still, I think the Jensen games are good enough. Invisible War was the nadir of the series, and Human Revolution managed to get things back on track, more or less. Mankind Divided is somewhat underrated here, but it does have its issues and the story is not a compelling one.
>>740646398i actually agree, peoples main issue with qte is when it replaces gameplay (eg shadow of mordor killing sauron) or when its inserted randomly into cutscenes (re4 actually handled this well). You are in fact adding more engaging gameplay by doing this. I wish your suggestion was something devs did considering how prevalent takedowns are in modern AAA slop
>>740661067Let me know about this level of allocation of advertising was associated with Thief. Dishonored is as phony as Levines games critical reception was organic.

>>740656173Thief sucks because you have a sword that does less damage than your blackjack. Why give it to me if I can't fight? I don't know if I'll ever accept that.

>>740681624Prey 2017 is incredible for the fact that at a certain point you find yourself having to use all your ammo then the game keeps going for another third and you have no fucking ammo to deal with anything and the stress is immense
>>740645501I hated how there was no flamethrower weapon. In the original, i did heavy build flamethrower+rocketlauncher.
>>740683030the flamethrower is unironically the best stealth weapon in the original
https://youtu.be/Kq5KWLqUewcThis trailer could come out today and everyone would be on their knees begging for forgiveness
>>740679987Literally all of your responses have just been: nuh uh! i don't like your example! when it shows the AI is clearly braindead in Dishonored and therefore failing at it's job as a stealth game. You act like there's something redeemable about the game yet it lacks any stealth mechanics whatsoever that aren't basic shit you can find in an shitty Assassins Creed game. Ubisoft shovelware was somehow better than this piece of shit and that's pretty low because those games aren't well designed and their original gameplay was just a vehicle for open world slop above anything else. Their actual challenges were garbage likewise with Dishonored having no challenge and was designed for drooling toddler retards.
i have the two new Deus Ex novels but never read them
>>740673071>>740684941The videos you've posted show minor pathfinding bugs (which I've never encountered myself), while the guards are still patrolling and reacting to sound, etc. in fact in most of the videos you've posted the player still gets spottedMeanwhile I've shown you guards in Thief not reacting to you jumping and running right next to them, not reacting to you literally being in front of their face and touching them, not reacting while hitting someone right in front of them, and so on>>740656586>>740656173>>740656052If you find anything as bad as this then feel free to reply with proof
>>740682629The stealth skills didn't feel very useful. There's a whole bunch of damage resist skills that seem pointless cause of how many enemies you have to scan, by that point you're probably at the late game and enemies have been two-shotting you for the last 15 hours.
>>740685746>still patrolling and reacting to soundWhat do you call throwing a guard into a glass case and a nearby guard not running to the source? working behavior or braindead zombie AI? because i call it shit AI and the lack of any meaningful sound systems.
