The biggest problem with the recent Tekken iterations is that they've introduced gameplay mechanics that are in direct contradiction to the fundamental pillars of the original Tekken games. Tekken games were lauded for their extremely realistic graphics, animations and gameplay. At the time, only VF was as grounded as it. It made a name for itself being very easy to visually process and in which it was very intuitive why an attack landed and why another didn't.Fast forward 30 years. Tekken is now overburdened with 2D anime kusoge mechanics that have destroyed this inherent intuitive understanding of Tekken. Power crushes that are arbitrarly weak to lows and throws. Heat bursts that just freeze up the whole match to zoom in on the character doing an armored mid punch. Heat smashes that just wreck through everything and that also absurdly leads to a huge frame advantage on block for even more free pressure. Rage Arts, that also freeze up the whole match to play a precanned animation that goes full anime on you and deals huge damage. This move is armored and can not be interrupted in any way. Your only option is to block the long cutscene attack. >b-but Tekken always had lasers and stuffDisingenous as fuck. While Tekken had supernatural and goofy elements, those traits were kept to certain few characters and nowhere ever has Tekken been as suffocated by universal 2D mechanics as it has now. What used to be a fun special attack that showed of Devil Kazuya's supernatural power, has now malformed into universal super attacks in which every character is basically straight out of a Marvel capeshit flick. Modern day Tekken is not Tekken. It's an absurd Frankenstein's monster of Tekken's remains. My guess is that the developers of Tekken today are not the ones who constructed the original games and are just trying to fill in the shoes of their predecessors who were superior in every way. We're playing the shadows of a once great game series.
