The thing about Mei is that she is legitimately designed to be unpopular, but they overshot. Extroverted high school girl is a very overpopulated niche in SC but Mei doesn't really have any extra selling points beyond that which is probably where the big mistake is. She's a supporting character to her unit mates by design and they leverage this to write Mei centric plots about her giving too much or falling behind her peers and everyone who's read her events likes Mei, but there's nothing to latch onto to make Mei your number one.Comparatively like, Hinana is a supporting character in her unit of popular girls who gets less focus than the others and doesn't have plove to carry her, but a lot of people enjoy Hinana as the "zero fucks given" idol or attach onto her attitude. Hinana has haters unlike Mei who no one unironically dislikes or anything but she holds fans a lot better.
