We could really use an extended OP with good resources, like a collection of links.
There's a lot of them out there, but finding the good ones is hard. Lots of clickbait, paid site scam, low quality crap and so on.

Knowing how to do nothing is very important in blitz. And in chess in general. This is becoming increasingly clear to me. You gotta know when to do shit and when not to.
My second highest scalp of today. It's not a great game or anything but it felt nice to play.

Could any anon give me some advice on whether I should stick with Lichess or switch to Chess.com? In the chess club that I just joined, everyone, especially the really strong and titled players, plays on Chess.com, but I honestly prefer Lichess. It's smoother, open source, and completely free (aka not run by Danny the Jew). I don’t want to feel like a social outcast, but I also don’t know if I'm ready to give up the beauty that is Lichess just to fit in.
>>
>>545617597
Chesscom pays titled players to shill for them. They all know lichess is better but they have to keep up the act or lose their shekels

>>

Ok, I'm esl and had to check out how they look, always thought bedbugs are just fleas. Yeah, I guess India would be a nightmare to sleep in especially if you desperately need a good rest for the next day. The hell continent of earth
>>
>>545617819
Damn, that makes so much sense now. Do you think a lot of the players that shill for them use Lichess on the down low? I've noticed that some of the titled players in my new chess club seem to use both. They keep their Chess.com account as their formal/public profile (full name, profile picture, FIDE rating, title, etc.) but use Lichess for a lot of their actual playing.
>>
>>545617828
With some of them definitely, especially my coach, who seems to only play on Chess.com. Maybe the best approach is to mainly use Lichess and keep a Chess.com account only for when I want to play games with them. Thoughts?
>>
>>545617828
Appreciate the advice btw anon. It means a lot.
>>
>>545618594
Nakamura would stream lichess (leela odds that chess.com doesn't have) with chess.com logo on top. chess.cum contracts pretty much forbid them from ever uttering the word lichess.
>>
How the fuck does Arjun do it? He's so consistent too. Really like that lil guy's chess.
>>
>>545618868
all the bullet fiends GM play it mostly on lichess because it has less lag, even magnus played on lichess a lot before .cum bought his company
>>
>>545618868
Yeah ,of course you can do that. I do that too, I have a group of pretty high rated chess friends with whom I only play from an account made specifically to play against them. They have no idea what my main lichess or dotcom account even is
>>
>>545618961
That’s wild lol, I just saw a clip of it. He really hid everything on the Lichess website except the board and just slapped the Chess.com logo at the bottom. Shameless.
>>
>>545619174
Didn’t Magnus also say that Chess.com pieces feel like they're stuck in mud? I think I remember seeing a clip of him saying that, and honestly, I feel the same way. Lichess just feels so much smoother in a way that Chess.com can't even compare (on desktop especially).
>>
>>545614756
Beautiful.
>>
>>545619436
Cheers. I guess I'll just use Lichess as my main and hop on Chess.com when I want to play with them. Thanks anons.

The wine install went smoothly. The "hard" part was not using the no-cd patch because it's a piece of shit that makes the game crash.
So I had to mount the ISO (duh) but for some ungodly reason the game wouldn't launch.
Turns out mounting it using CDemu was the only way to make it work.
Oh and before that I created a fake A: floppy drive in wine because people were saying the game wouldn't start without a floppy drive present for some reason, but I don't know if it did anything.

After that for better performance install the extra graphical drivers included with the ISO. It's some dumb extract > drag and drop in Program Files stuff.

Then you're good to go. The videos won't launch but you'll see the funny cutscenes.
The fact the videos are missing isn't a big deal because they're on the CD so you can play them manually.

Sorry, I missed a comma. I realized after it made it hard to read. Let me repeat.

No, wanting to play old games on the fun machine is not a justifiable reason to use Linux. You are misusing your computer at that point. You pretty much only need Linux if you are using it as a business machine. For serious business.

That says more about you than the 10+0 pool. Lichess uses Glicko-2 and people usually stick with either increment or no increment Rapid. Some people have higher ratings because they're faster or handle time pressure better. On a tangential note, I'm 1510 after 80 10+15 Rapid games. How retarded do you think I am? I'm confident I don't need to study openings yet and still need to shore up on fundamentals and tactics. Helpful to hear from someone 700 points higher rated.

>Yet in the final analysis, the secret to the Morra Gambit's longevity lies not solely in the tactical arena (all gambits pose immediate tactical dangers to the defender). Rather, the Morra is also firmly positionally grounded. For starters, a Morra gambiteer may safely castle and tuck away his king on g1 behind a healthy blanket of pawn cover. The same luxury is not available in the King's Gambit (so aptly named for throwing the white king's safety to the wind). On the other end of the board, White's rooks may rush to c1 and d1, where they will chew up central squares on the wide open c- and d-files.

I am following the Bavarian Open for Alua’s quest for IM (she won’t get it this tournament but will probably end up ~30 Elo away from 2400 so just needs another good tournament or two to clinch it). But I have noticed something strange. Her compatriot Liya Kurmangaliyeva, who is like the 6th option on the Kazakhstan women’s team, has defeated GM Brandon Jacob, GM Ortik Nigmatov, and IM Ashot Parvanyan. All three of them dropped out of the tournament entirely after losing to her. What’s going on?

>>545821218
One thing I have learned from watching Alua’s games is that you need to view with the evaluation showing the top 3-5 engine lines. Because the computer can consider a position as a draw or even slightly losing with best play, but if you dig deeper into the lines you can see that the player with the “advantage” needs to play the best 5-6 moves in a row to maintain their so-called advantage, and if they slip up at all they are immediately losing. The better/tactically stronger player often steers the game into these sort of positions.

I don’t think it’s weird she won those games, to clarify. Kazakhstan chess federation is currently run by a Russian billionaire who has been pumping money into youth development (in an intelligent way, I must admit). I still think he’s doing some weird power play and trying to become president of Kazakhstan but in the mean time as president of their chess federation he is making good moves that’s getting results. The weird thing is that all three of the players she beat dropped out right after. With Jacobson, ok it was round 2 maybe he wasn’t feeling it and didn’t want to risk more Elo, but to drop out after round 7 is weird.

What chess books would you suggest to a novice who found out via the lessons offered by Duolingo that they might like chess problems but have too much of a smartphone-addled zoomer brain to have an interest in proper games? I'm hoping to encourage this individual to be less inclined to stare into their hellbrick and more inclined to play over the board and moving from solving problems on the phone to problems in a book seems like it would be a good start.

Thoughts on this book? It sounds like the study structure might be gamified enough to scratch the Duolingo-style itch as well as a book can.

>Aren't bed bugs normal
They're very common in some places
>impossible to eliminate completely
If it's a years-old infestation on a big building then kinda. Pesticides are notoriously bad at getting bedbugs and that's usually what extermination services offer in Mexico, from personal experience. Ideally you want to get them with humid heat (someone fills the place with steam like a sauna for a couple hours). Then, since that one treatment most likely didn't get all of them your whole house becomes a fucked up game of tower defense where you you have to keep everything squeaky clean and airy for months, use bedbug traps near your bed, potentially throw away old furniture or clothes that might have gotten infested, cover any places where they may be hiding in diatomaceous earth, separate any beds or sofas from the walls so they can't crawl down to them easily, and fumigate regularly on top of that. It's a bit of a conundrum in that they almost exclusively feed on human blood, can go months without eating, and can bounce back relatively quickly if you miss even one fertilized female, so they're a bit harder to get rid off than less specialized bugs like cockroaches where a deep cleaning will get you halfway there

Also if you see bedbugs at every hotel you stay in they're probably from your luggage and you cost those places a lot of money

Hot Take: Puzzles are not useful because you don't know in a real game that there's a "right move" on the board. Playing too many puzzles can actually stunt your growth because you neglect planning
>>
>>545972821
Not really. Openers are memorization, endgame is often easy to solve with counting. Midgame has by far the highest skill cap, and puzzles help you see patterns.
>>
>>545972821
if people just practiced raw calculation they'd theoretically make more progress but in practice they would hate it and give up
>>
>>545972821
Horrible take. If done correctly puzzles train you precisely to evaluate board state and to calculate faster. Protip: there's always a "right move" on the board. What you're getting at is that you might still be a 1000 shitter that can barely spot a double attack even though you're calculating mate in 5 on a puzzle, and that's true for the reason you mentioned, but saying they're not useful is completely retarded.
>>
>>545973808
This is why you do puzzles that include various situations, not just checkmate in 13.
Chesstempo even has defensive puzzles if you practice on Mixed, where you don't take any piece but protect your stuff. Of course the point of it is that you don't know if the puzzle is about mating, forking or just purely defending, so you have to evaluate the situation.
>>
>>545974126
does chesstempo have puzzle packs you can download? I need defense puzzles really bad
>>
>>545972821
>Puzzles are not useful because you don't know in a real game that there's a "right move" on the board.
You're right that a limitation of most puzzle training is the fact you know there's an obvious "right move."
You're wrong that that limitation makes puzzles not useful.
>>
>>545972821
>you don't know in a real game that there's a "right move" on the board
not true, there is always a right move on the board
>>
>>545974993

This is clearly a typical reddit take (and I'll say another one that's popular too)
With puzzles you train pattern recognition and calculation, if you see that a sac is possible, then you calculate
>but how did you see the sac
because you saw this pattern before, you saw these weaknesses before that makes you see the sac, it's all about the theme and the weakness.
This is a good book to train that: Tune Your Chess Tactics Antenna: Know When (and where!) to Look for Winning Combinations

I've found that chewing gum helps me focus and sometimes I'll clench my jaw without it. I started doing this back in high school when I was so conservative with my caffeine consumption that I rarely ever even had tea so it's not necessarily a stimulant abuse tic.

Looking at a position and calculating as much of the move tree as possible. Writing it out is encouraged so you can mark what you think are the better or worse moves and check it against known variations or the engine evaluation.
The amount of time and effort you want to put into that (and the subsequent improvement) is up to your own motivation.

It is. In fact the whole thing is funny in regards to social media's choice to blame his OD/suicide on Kramnik despite there being a very clear reason why he tipped over the edge on the internet available to review. It's astonishing to me that the social medias do not want to consider that that last twitch stream of his had to have been so terribly embarrassing for him in light of how hard he attempted to portray a responsible persona. His drug problem and his petulant responses to the people trying to help him (arguing over his "curfew" like a child towards the end) is almost certainly the reason he pulled the plug. He knew it would have dogged him for the rest of his career.

I think his friends just gave up, he doesn't have a coach and tries to grind it by himself with no feedback from a pro who can understand his shit, I think he doesn't even train that hard, he said he reads like 9999 books per second but strangely, somehow, he keeps making the same mistakes and trying to play like "Karpov".

Furthermore, I don't even think he has a truly favorite player; he mentions Karpov and "positional masters," but it seems that this style of play isn't suited for him. I believe he stunted his playing by being a faggot, scaredy cat, and playing the London/Caro Kann early, and avoiding any type of complication/calculation. There is a reason coaches teach to play e4 and to try to attack and be aggressive, even pic related agrees.

it would've been taken as admission of guilt since chess cum had proof he cheated online multiple times. the narrative would be much different since he isn't a member of the chess mafia, there'd be no memorial tournaments or cups named after him, no crying e-whores, just polite messages like "rip. take care of your mental health guys". magnus would get meme'd by 4chan as a killer but no one would take it seriously. staying alive and aiming for world champ out of spite was the only logical move for hans. that, or quiet retirement and a transition to a different career.

It shows the immense hypocrisy of the mainstream chess community. Vladimir Kramnik is painted as this evil villain even though Magnus was actively trying to ruin Han’s career, and the fallout from the accusation was a thousand times worse for Hans than it was for Danya. When Kramnik started accusing Danya, 99% of chess players thought Kramnik was suffering schizophrenic paranoia and took Danya’s side. Hans on the other hand was universally mocked, ridiculed, and blacklisted from tournaments. Not a soul was willing to call Magnus out and these are the exact same hypocritical scumbags who are demanding Kramnik’s head on a silver platter.

It's very common to see GMs resign when their opponent has a checkmate in 5 moves or can force some huge advantage.

Meanwhile, playing to the bitter end shows not just a lack of skill and analytical ability, but a lack of self control and self respect.
Trying to squeak out 6 points is just pathetic. The rating "gained" from a swindle will be given back shortly, because nothing was learned.
The time would be better spent on a puzzle, so you get into such lost positions less often.
inb4 uhhhh but it's a """endgame""" learning opportunity
Yeah I guess your endgames down a piece and a pawn really need some polishing. Since it happens frequently.

Obviously not talking about bullet or +0 blitz which are totally degenerate formats for animals.

boom, chess fixed.

oh, and it's forbidden to resign, you play to checkmate always.
>>
>>546186343
I'm in the same boat as you so I don't know. I wouldn't bother memorizing tons of openings, we suck because we blunder pieces midgame and don't know endgame tactics. Learn to fix that first
>>
>>546186343
Openings don't matter at all, just take the center and get your pieces out.

You're not improving because you blunder too much. All your games are decided by simple blunders. Stop blundering pieces and simple tactics and you will never be under 1000 again.

Every single time you move, ask yourself if that that piece can be taken or if it undefends a piece that can be taken

The number one reason players under 1000 lose is because they leave their castle like this until it's too late. The threat of backrank mate is the bane of beginners.

ALWAYS push one of the pawns even if it feels like a waste of a turn, do it early and habitually.

>Every single time you move, ask yourself if that that piece can be taken or if it undefends a piece that can be taken

I get that, that's too entry level. Lately I've seen my games turn more towards a draw in which both sides make some trades along the way, but no mistakes for a long time. I feel I'm playing "by the book" even though I have no chess book knowledge.

Just kidding, but it is good to have an idea of what reasonable placements of the first few pieces might be.
The importance of it is to give yourself some chance for some tactics instead of being screwed from the beginning with everything on bad squares. Mainly, vie for activity around central squares, developing pieces, and don't open yourself to devastating early checks or attacks on undeveloped pieces.

You can pick a few opening recommendations for beginners from any site, whatever interests you, and play around with the possibilities.
For instance: https://www.365chess.com/view/best-chess-openings-for-beginners/

>>546189074
just make moves that do something useful, every move. An equal semen slurping trade of pieces is not something useful. Putting a piece where it can get traded or kicked back is not useful.
If you make moves that threaten to do something, or improve your position preparing to threaten something, every single move, everybody crumbles. You likely make a lot of moves that are not useful and prepare to do nothing, even if they are not mistakes, and anybody will hold for a long time against such moves.

how do his opponents pull off bullet tricks in classical? That's a crazy feat
>>
>>546185929
I don't have a mechanical issue pulling out the win, but it's needless waste of 2-10 minutes. Some cretin is holding me hostage, forcing me to stuff my cock down their throat, because the threat isn't enough. If it were normative, I wouldn't mind, and most opponents resign appropriately. 100% of non-novices I've played over the board have resigned appropriately. But there's a persistent element of the online community that plays like niggers. Littering and graffiti is just what they do (never resign).

Good news: you don't
>Where the fuck do I even start?
Look back through your games without an engine and I promise you'll see tons of hanging pieces and simple tactic opportunities (forks, skewers, pins, etc) for both you and your opponent. You can use the engine for confirmation, but you should try to evaluate the board on your own first.

Same. Working out keeps me sane. If you can establish good physical health it creates a really solid foundation for everything else you do, keeping your lows from dipping too low and providing the stability for your highs to reach their highest potential. I'm currently maintaining that foundation while waiting to make some more highs happen again.

physical activity is the only natural stimulant that can really uplift your general feelings

consider prisoners, from those in for 2 years, to those in for life, what do they almost universally do? work out
their life is fucking shit
you might reply they only do it because prison is so physically dangerous and if you aren't fit you get raped or killed
that is a bit myopic; really, it's one of the few things they can do to feel good, and one of the few things they can do to take command over their life
again, prisoners lives are fucking awful and they work out all the time to feel better

Kaczynski worked out daily despite lamenting that he was very busy in prison and had too much to get done in terms of reading and writing. He had no physical contact with other prisoners so physical security wasn't a motivation, he was purely motivated by what you described. (pic related >>545947757)

I used to be like this. Let me give you some advice that once helped me. Every person needs three pastimes in life. (It can be more than three, but there are three categories.)

One of these should be something difficult that if you work hard at you are guaranteed to see quantifiable results. This activity should be removed from external pressure (comparing yourself with others, for instance). A good example is weightlifting since if you train consistently you will see yourself improve (some off days no withstanding). A bad example is chess since your rating doesn't always represent your skill level (you can climb past your "true" rating with luck, or it can lag behind your actual genuine improvement). Another good example would be learning a musical instrument or to draw, if you have the talent.

A second activity should be high-stress and uncertain, but you should find it rewarding. Chess fits the bill quite well, as do other competitive sports and games.

Finally you need an activity which is not hard to do. This is what you fall back on when you're not able to put out effort for one of the above. An example would be vidya or watching something, cooking, or an art that you're already skilled at.

As a NEET this is harder to achieve since for many people their job fills spot 1 or 2. You need to think carefully about how you spend your time. Try different things until you find something that fits in the categories that suits you. You don't have to quit activities in category 3, but only use them when you truly feel no ability to do one of the other categories. It's easy to cheat. Don't. I know you can do it.

i have a job and its not any of those, its just something that i have to waste my time with in order to have money to live

They have become one with the source. All things flow from the monad. Capablanca lived a full life with tons of interests and rarely studied chess. When he sat down at the board, he became one with source, the logos itself, and God himself spoke to him, telling him which piece of wood to move.

You can go in to the g3 arrangements immediately or Qc2 first. Qc2 forces black to commit something else before you decide to g3. Poke around in database for how the rest of the development goes.
