Raincode was a failure to identify the secret sauce that made Danganronpa so popular. People like the mysteries sure, but mainly as a driver of character drama. Kodaka is really good at making eclectic ensemble casts with snappy banter, Raincode's first mistake was not picking up on that. Most of the game is just internal monologue between Yuma and Shinigami, which gets old really quickly. I think he tried to do the Uchikoshi buddy cop thing but it just didn't work as well. On paper, making the cast super-detectives with unique skills feels analogous to Super Highschool Level talents... but it falls flat because the big problem with making your entire cast detectives is you can't have six detectives on the same case or else the player doesn't get to do anything.So instead of a more active ensemble, you just end up with Yuma & Shinigami tailing along with their guest star party member of the week. But then because of plot reasons, they don't get to remember anything from inside the mystery labyrinths, so it feels like half of their screentime doesn't even matter.And the people who were in it for the mysteries end up disappointed by the full reset in case complexity back to DR1 levels. The game copies DR's mechanics but makes them really slow and tedious to do, and for mysteries so simplistic, that's not great. The game is so sluggishly paced and ironically the full voice-acting makes it worse. It's incredible how poorly thought-out it was in terms of succeeding Danganronpa for the same audience. Whereas Hundred Line perfectly understood. The appeal is seeing a group of wacky teenagers bantering and getting caught in drama, with snappy, lively pacing. If you have that, they can be doing almost anything, it never needed to be a killing game.If you play HNDR and Raincode back to back, the latter feels like plodding through mud to get to the interesting bits. Even the middling routes in HNDR kept me engaged, large swathes of Raincode are just dull.

I finally finished the game. It was pretty good. Pretty good. A lot of stuff I liked. Mostly I'm impressed with Uchikoshi. He's not the greatest writer ever but he is some kind of wizard when it comes to maintaining continuity with complex narratives.I still think it would've been better if they had ditched the hundred endings gimmick and focused on writing a tighter story with less repetition. There's too much useless crap to slog through before you can get to the good parts.I liked S.F., CoA, Rebellion, V'exhness, and Mystery routes the best I think. Well, I say S.F. and Mystery, but they had the same weakness as the rest of the kill Eito side where the actual conflict between Futurum and Earth fades into the background. Comedy was okay. Dunno why so many people like KG but it was neat when the girls kissed.
