If mean chuds, if the emergent loop being activated by the fixed pity wins of the inner gameplay loops, this basically could be clasifiied as a singular musical loop bar.So basically we can design the flow of the game using these musical gameplay bars, instead of the traditional winning and losing condition. So, let's say your game last 32 of these musical bars. Then your game doesn't have a fixed lenght, like using a timer. But neither it needs a victory or losing game over condition. It only needs to reach eventually to the musical bar 32 or 16 for the composition to end.So this mean, a very skilled speedrunner could theorically end the game much much faster than a casual player. But this means the game is guaranteed to end because of the guaranteed pity wins.

Anime and manga make a shitton of money nowadays, as do anime games. The manga section in my country's largest bookstore chain sells so much better than everything else that they keep having to completely rearrange their stores just to accomodate the ever-growing manga sections (yes, sections plural). Hobbyist shops out here pick up gunpla and find they're the fastest-selling model kits in the store. Supposedly the Fate franchise of all things has somehow made more money in two decades than Batman has in over eight. It's not a visual style that every single person on the planet likes, but it has been globally successful for several decades now. Saying that it "reduces appeal" is like smugly saying that putting peanut butter on toast reduces the appeal of bread. Yeah, there's some people who have an allergic reaction to peanut butter, but there's also a huge amount of people out there who love it and greatly prefer toast with peanut butter to toast without it, and the companies which sell peanut butter make a huge amount of money off that preference even if it's a subset of all the people worldwide who eat bread.

The thing I hate about modern art learning is, and why I think so many suffer is because it's framed in this pathway like you need to master line art before you even know how to draw. It's working backwards and it's obviously frustrating. The average person won't be able to learn like that and will filter them hard. But art is ultimately just a trained skill.I would argue that learning embedded programming or electronics like microcontrollers or even just being an electrician or plumber is far harder to learn than art because fucking up in art isn't that bad. But I can't really sit here and say anyone can learn art cause it's just a skill like anything else while not actually having any other skills. So I've decided to learn C/C++. I think line art is actually terrible. Like learn how to sketch first, and actually sketch not this construction nonsense. Construction work only after you know art, because it's basically like doing math you show your work. Even if you can do calculus in your head can you solve a multi part word problem all in your head and just write down the perfect answers? Art is like that except you're doing it form basically numerical guessing through intuition hundreds of times to get millimeter accuracy. If you actually want to do art from construction you need to have very good geometry and use precise tools like a compass and ruler. That's not really easy or fun. So once again something that's supposed to make art easier is actually making it harder. You might be wondering then why are these shilled as THE way to learn? Because the people telling you this are just artist trying to grift you not art teachers. Cause the reality is much more boring. It's why you always hear this: just draw.Last thread I gave a step by step guide on how to actually just draw. With that plan you can be drawing good stuff in weeks! Now if any skilled c/c++ programmers have advice for me, I'd like to hear it.

>>546148845In James Hague's Optimization in the Twenty-First Century, he offers the following advice:>Get rid of the code you didn't need to write in the first place.>Early programming courses emphasize writing lots of code, not avoiding it, and it's a hard habit to break. The first program you ever wrote was something like "Hello World!" It should have looked like this:>Hello world!>There's no code. I just typed "Hello world!" Why would anyone write a program for that when it's longer than typing the answer? Similarly, why would anyone compute a list of prime numbers at runtime--using some kind of sieve algorithm, for example--when you can copy a list of pre-generated primes? There are lots of applications out there with, um, factory manager caching classes in them that sounded great on paper, but interfacing with the extra layer of abstraction is more complex than what life was like before writing those classes. Don't write that stuff until you've tried to live without it and fully understand why you need it.

suffering in gamedev is mostly caused by ignorance. mainly people ignoring their limitations. nobody forces you to make a game, therefore it's your own choice. and if you choose to do something you can't you, then suffering is self-induced.e.g. if you choose to make a game that needs 300 high quality 3D assets with animations and you know you can't do it, but you make that your goal anyways, then it's your own fault for running against the wall.if people would work on games they KNOW they can make, they'd stop suffering.

I think I now understand how to design a game to be basically unsolvable by computers.Basically imagine the game is two players competing to sell more T-shirts.One player goal is to sell more red T-shirts and the other is blue T-shirts.But the game has 3 systems that interact using probabilistic gameplay loops like gathering the raw materials, then crafting the materials, then paying taxes and then like selling the T-shirts to npcs. But at the same time, both players have to like exchange items in these loops to get materials and items you need but also exchange them for items and materials you have.Eventually all items and materials are important for a clear strategy in the rules, but that strategy has a clear counter strategy, like RPS layers of counter strategies arranged in a graph of triangular relationships.

But yet isn't 3 times more expensive. Has an astronomical 2% WLRR (Wishlist to Review Rate) Blargis aka Retargis seriously thought his game dev youtube channel would convert 100k wishlists into 100k copies sold.Bro got a 0.1% WLRR and quit his job over wishlists...OVER WISHLISTSQUIT HIS JOBBYFOR A HOBBYTeam cherry is a 3 person team with a 20 times better WLRR. And that's not even actual copies. According to google Retargis sold around 9k copies, and silksong sold an estimate of 4-6 million. So WLRR isn't even the full effect it's really just a Theta generatorThat's about 500 times more. Even if we cut the revenue in half over bullshit like steam cut and taxes that's still like 60 million dollars compared to 70k3 times more more commitment doesn't seem to pop up anywhere? Why?Well entropy. It take energy to order matter, that's why even the most efficient chips will heat up and room temo super conductors are just a wet dream. Well entropy is actually a universal law and it applies in game dev too. 3 times more energy was just needed for the level of detail team cherry wanted for their vision. It was just a universal debt it didn't actually have direct causal effects on their game's success. Retargis is like a terrible cpu that melts itself, he took a bunch of energy and premature ejac'd all other the place wasting it for a shitty hot spicy diarrhea output. 90% of game devs do that. At blargis' terrible energy conversion to reproduce a product quality as silk song it would probably take like 20+ years. would you but at 160

i'll drop my game idea here, cause i wont make it.hexagon grid based survival game where each tile is a resources, a camp, hunting territory, cave etc. - the camp can be upgraded, but the upgrades aren't on the map, but in the menu of the camp, like workstations, campfire, stockpile etc. - depending on the map size it could also involve tech trees, characters having needs (bed, cloth etc.) and maybe even turn into fantasy (gems, crafting, mythical creatures roaming the map)why did i think it's a good idea? cause nobody mixed survival with "abstract" strategy/hexagon movement. i was undecided if it should be real-time or round-based. cause real-time might be good if you want to turn it into somewhat of an idle game.

The problem for me isn't scoping down. I've learned how to do it, and I have a few ideas that can be easily finishified. The problem is marketing, specifically promotion, community outreach and community building etc. There's just no good way to reach an audience anymore, unless you're willing to worm your way into some tranny discord for years, which is not something I can do.And no, posting devlogs and e-mailing youtubers and streamers isn't helpful, mainly because it's all a crapshoot on whether if it will do anything or not, and youtubers often don't respond at all because they've been burned by or heard stories of fucking scamming jeets who pretend to be game devs so that bridge of goodwill was burnt for me before I even started. Retooling your campaign to make use of that takes time, and by the time you're ready the fad is already gone.So my point is, even if you force yourself, force this humiliation, it's still VERY likely to be for nothing. That's how shit it all is now. There used to be a time where just simply posting on twitter about your game would net you real sales, but that time is long gone now.

Your game would completely break AlphaGo, AlphaZero, and even modern LLM-based RL agents. They could play it — as in, take actions and learn short-term heuristics — but they couldn’t converge on a dominant policy or provably optimal behavior. They’d get trapped in the same spiral as humans: adapting to counter-adaptations, trying to exploit unstable patterns, forever chasing a moving target.bros...I've gotten too powerful.WTF

it's interesting how i find motivation for dev when i want to learn, but lose motivation when i want to make a product i can sell.maybe i jump from learning to working way too early. maybe i should make way more time for learning.there's like this pressure that you have a short timespan to learn some things and then you have to turn what you learned into money asap. yet there's way too little time to learn.and the whole point of learning is to do something for the improvement and not for publishing it. it's ok to make 10 failed games, when your goal was learning.but i understand that if you aren't a nepobaby (i'm a poorfag), you cannot have this mindset, cause you need money asap.
>>546157086TRVKE
>>546157101the thing is, learning is ineffective. when you want to sell something it's: "use the premade tools", when you learn it's: "don't use premade tools, or you wont learn doing it yourself".actually being goal-oriented heavily discourages learning, it only values time-efficient decisions.

All you need is a file a lot of time to create an engine block by hand, but if you want to sell cars for a living, you should probably learn what the abilities and limitations of CNCs are and design your engine block around those limitations.
>>546157538but why does it matter? if your game is a flop like it most likely will be, Steam could be taking 1% or 90% it's more or less the same to you. and if your game is a success and you get $600k instead of $900k, boo fucking hoo.

It could work, if you already have millions of eyes on your game who are desperate to buy your game no matter whereMan I hate steam too, I like .exes I can start directly without waiting for some soc media adjacent bloatware to start up first, but you might as well complain about death and taxes too
>>546158546If your maps are just pre-determined and static, or generated once and not changed you won’t need a mesher. For something like Minecraft with world editing and shit a mesher re-meshes the edited terrain into as few vertices as possible for performance. Like if you had a 10x10 grid of static meshes you could combine them into a single 100x100 mesh reducing the memory footprint from 800 vertices down to 8. This is the ideal way to deal with rendering grid-based anything really.

The only thing related to pixelating the render are the two scale nodes, one scales up and one scales back down using nearest neighbor... Also under render settings > film set the filter size to 0.01 to turn off anti-aliasingWhat's going on in the video is I do the rendering in two steps, first the rgb split base sprite so I can have a shader change the R G and B colors in game to other colors. The other step is rendering the snow and other parts I don't want to be colored by the shader as a separate sprite that I lay on top of the other one. That's done by swapping the RGB base model for the car for a fully black one and feeding the red channel of the render back into the alpha so the car body blocks stuff behind it but is also transparent.>>546162476There's a blender plugin that generates them but I'm not sure how I'd add the snow easily. >>546160672His video said he sold about 9k copies. Lets say it's 10k by now. At 15 dollars from the sale that's 150k pre tex pre cutprobably about about 75k raw cash afterwards cause 0.76*0.7 is almost 50%Right cause you need to consider he's going to get a specific tax bracket after the steam cut.So after the math it's about 79k.His actualy release trailer has 20k fucking views.Suppose theoretically youtubers make 0.013 cents. According to social blade his earning are between 100 to 1k a month. Not that bad. But let's just go with what you said, his most viewed video is 2.4 million views, let's say he can hit that once a month, he has a very inconsistent schedule. That puts him at 31k per month. Assuming he makes 0.013 dollars per view, over one penny per view seems extremely unrealistic, so I'm just going to go with what social blade is saying and say he's making an optimistics 1k a month from youtube alone. Most youtubers make money from sponsors, and blargis is his own sponsor. The numbers don't work.Even my steam revenue plugin is agreeing with my math that he make around 150k.He would have made it, if he kept his job you have to consider that he quit his job at some point during development supposedly when he got 100k wishlists. That means he didn't make it he grabbed all of his profit and lit on fire to keep warm.Classic lotto-winner failure. Yeah let's put it like that, say he just won the lotto for 200k, he then quit his job to live off 200k and expects to keep winning the lotto. Is that you blargis?Wanna know why you lost? cause your fans were game developers not gamers. ok, what if I play a game where there's a 10 usd gamble on getting kicked in the groin by an average mma fighter and there's a 30% chance of getting a 5 in a game of 20 pair of dice throws versus a 100 usd gamble on getting punched in the face by a female elite boxer and there's a 80% of getting a 1 in a game of 80 pair of dice throws. Which should I pick.Final VerdictIf we treat “pain = money lost,”Option A (groin kick) is the less bad choice. You lose $1,004 in pain-adjusted value versus $4,940 for the boxer punch.Lmao, Chat gpt is stupid as fuck.
