Subaru says the remaining students including her are those who kept Arius together, and the Squad and sensei abandoned them. Saori thinks back to her new understanding of the Vanitas verse after seeing the outside world, and tells Subaru she regrets how she spent her life.

Trinity writing works amazingly because a lot of the girls are initially plain and boring. The writers can add a little spice to them during the event or main story and call it character development. Gehenna students are established as too quirky or too perfect from the start and that is why they can't add more spice during their stories because it will just dilute their character which might make readers see it as mischaracterization instead of growth. Tldr; plain and boring girls are the best.
