Unbelievable, they're literally speedrunning it into the ground. Literally do nothing and they could maintain superiority in the OS market for years, just male security updates, that is it. At this rate I'm likely to go with Apple or an extremely user friendly version of Linux ~8 years from now. I really am hoping Gabe transitions his Steam OS into a full fledged OS. Would jump over to it. I presume that not only can it run games well but developing games on such a system would also be straightforward like Windows?

Coffin was a game that people actually wanted to play and its characters weren't coombait, and yet it still happened to it. And it's not really "marketing" because all the people who check out the game end up disappointed and not buying it because it's nothing like the secondaries portray it.

Nobody's talking about gemini in here? What a shame. It's honestly really good at some things if you know how to prompt around its built in bias. Sadly that means being very specific without giving it too much content depending on the orthogonalization of the information you present it with.

It seems to be especially good at doing things when you can create systems that divide things up and then synergize them together creatively.

ECS typically has implications regarding memory layout and queryability that you lose out on by using classes. You're probably just using OOP with managers.

>ECS typically has implications regarding memory layout and queryability that you lose out on by using classes. You're probably just using OOP with managers.
Couldn't you say if you're using Unity you at least partially use ECS? Components are a core of unity. The gameobjects are like the entities. As for systems. huhh I guess you have to do that on purpose.

In terms of GOs being a composition of components in the editor, vaguely. However, if you want to say "Get me all the GOs that have components A, B, and C," you're going to have to scan every GO in the scene to find them, or maintain some dictionaries that map component sets to lists of objects. ECS as an architecture really exists to make querying entities with certain features be inherently extremely fast because they all live next to one another in memory. Just having a singleton manager that loops over a list of objects looks sort of like a system, but it's really missing the performance backbone that motivates ECS.

>>
>>547894467
This. Seems to be one of two routes for most devs
>they lucked out but don't actually understand what makes a desired game
>the dev "gets it" and makes success after success
If you're in the first category you are only gonna make it by blasting through as many games as you can develop. Rapid fire as many games, small games at that, big games will drain your energy and probably make you give up the moment it flops. Try making a game for 10 years and it only makes $100k in profit. Whereas someone who just gets it can make $10m+ despite spending 10 years on it. Maybe you can learn what sells but I doubt that knowledge will come to you quickly. Simply knowing what genre's are selling well doesn't mean you will do well. There's also a matter of competency, even if you know what sells it doesn't mean much if you can't make the game well enough.

In a first world country you could just get a second job and part time, like at McDonalds, and make $10k in a year. It's offputting to invest so much time into a game only for it to flop. Also if you're in the US, $10k is like 3 or 4 months of living expenses for someone in the lower middle class.

Gross revenue is NOT what you get to spend
Gross x 0.9 = after refunds x 0.9 = after sales tax x 0.7 = after Steam's cut x 0.8 = after income taxes
So around $4-5k assuming the dev doesn't have mandatory social contributions (retirement, health insurance) where he lives and if he's outside the US assuming his country has a double taxation treaty with the US otherwise it could be even lower than $4k.

I often think about what I'll do with all the money when my game makes it. This sounds like a retarded thing to think about but...
At one point my uncle had $6M and he spent most of it and now he's surviving on social security. I asked him why didn't he save or invest anything and he said your thinking changes when you get that amount of money in a short amount of time. Confidence through the roof, optimism through the roof, you feel like you can do no wrong and that any problem is easy to solve.
That's why I think it's important to think about what to do with the money BEFORE I actually earn it.
First thing I'll do is buy some real estate to live in. One bedroom is enough because I'm not gonna have a family.
Then I'll invest 80% of what's left in some index fund that I'll live on and spend the remainder on some riskier investments, whatever is the bitcoin or nft or nvidia at that moment.
I think I'll still want to make games but I'm not going to be hiring people. I figure if I could make one successful game by myself I can make another.
>>
so if i make a porn gambling game i will surely make money right? the gambling takes place off of steam. on steam is just the porn game. i make a separate website having nothing to do with steam where you watch a livestream of the game played by a bot, and users bet which one of the two girls at a time the main character (bot, played by AI) will seduce first. it's not random, some girls are easier than others and the AI my upgrade the MC's stats in certain ways, which you can interpret their success from.

can this make money?
>>
>>547904532
the game is just a game. people may buy it on steam organically. the gambling site is a marketing tool to funnel a different audience (gamblers) to steam to buy the game, but also providing an additional completely separate revenue stream than the game (gambling fees). the game itself has no gambling at all, it's a porn game.

>>
>>547905150
the good news is this game can be completely ai generated. simple rpgmaker style 2d topdown tilemap characters (all art / character sprites made by ai) then generate the anime style rape videos with ai (the anime girl in the video matches the hair color skin color etc of the pixel sprite), simple gameplay of the main character roaming around trying to corner then without getting shot/caught by the police/strangers (all NPCs). he can randomly place tampons/dollars/chad's phone number/etc on the ground to lure them to it in alleys them leap out.

dont ask me how jewish/indian i have to be to make an "ai generated rape gambling game"

your uncle is correct that your perception changes, but you're wrong about thinking about what to do with the money before you get it. you're probably wondering why would i say that? well anon, it's because planning is a meme if you're trying to change your perception of something. that requires actual inner changes where you need to fix how you see things and learn how to appreciate having just 1k in your bank account. start there, save up 1k, then 2k, etc. go all the way up for a while so you can appreciate what you have. with enough practice, perhaps, you might have enough mind flow integrated to know not to fuck it all up from the get go

and he mentioned such an obvious but powerful truth about your game, it should be something that when people are seeing someone else play it they think about all the ways they would play it differently, either seeing someone make decisions or even struggle with the game then getting inspired to play the game then do it better.

https://youtu.be/0oYXQLdggHw&t=1495

So don't make your game too easy and do keep it open ended enough that if it does get streamed peoples imagination will be sparked.

i know not many people do this, but the pros recommend it. i used to think it was dumb. now i think its kinda enlightening to know exactly what your about to make before you make it.

it's where you make diagrams/etc of the entire software your about to create, all its systems, how they connect, how theyre layered, etc. they used to just do it on a whiteboard now there's apps idk.

for game dev specifically there's a diagram for your game's software architecture then another for its gameplay systems. once you make the chart its quite nice to just be able to look at it at any time.

i think its dumb how unity's physics step is separate from the render loop. physics by default is 50 ticks per second and the render loop is 60 frames per second or whatever the player's monitor refresh rate is. that's why when i fuck with unity i tick the option to bind the physics step into the render loop instead so physics runs as fast as they can render it.
>>
>>547922968
this is because it fixes a lot of timing issues with your own code if you know the only main loop in your entire game is ONE LOOP not two loops operating at two different timesteps. i only want one main loop in my game idk about you. eliminates many race conditions in your own code and just general confusion about whether something you coded belongs in Update or FixedUpdate. nope, its all in Update now.
>>
cobbe
>>
>>547923109
not to mention this reduces input lag. the player and other physics objects only move at 1/50th of a second. you captured input in update now it has to WAIT for the next FixedUpdate to actually move anything. yea sure if you bind the physics step into the render loop the game slows down from 240fps to maybe 160fps but so what thats because your running physics at 160fps instead of 50fps, and you get less input lag.
>>
>>547922002
I think that's called whitepapers. Similar to a game design document but purely technical.
>>
>>547922421
>secures full-time employment by graduation
So they have a job waiting for them while they graduate? That happens for almost nobody anyway, regardless of generation.
>>
>>547923293
The main place where input lag matters is with camera movement, which you can separate from the physics update (both translation and rotation).
It's usually considered a good idea to avoid making the physical behavior of the game highly framerate dependent. Running physics at 160 fps is probably not a great idea desu, you'll get weird situations like in Quake games where certain framerates give you better jump distances etc.
>>
>>547922002
>but the pros recommend it.
No they don't. Academics recommend it because they don't have to write software, they just have to go through the process of writing software and show that they're writing software in order to get grants. Nobody in the real world has ever used a UML diagram for any real technical purpose.

The other people who use it are managers and moneymen, they probably want some kind of whitepaper or plan before they'll fund a project, so a document like that might get created as part of a project pitch which the managers and moneymen won't even read but are glad to have it. But unless you're literally building a console port of some game that already exists you won't need it.

If you're a solo dev you don't need any form of documentation at all. Whitepapers and GDDs are just ideaguying with a word document. I keep random notes of when I have ideas, but the notion that I should formalize any of it into some structured document is retarded

Anyone who shits on idea-guying reveals their inexperience making games. In the process of making any substantial game that isn't a 1-to-1 copy of another game, you will have to at some point come up with ideas for interesting things for the player to do. The only reason idea-guying has a bad reputation is because pretty much everyone is terrible at actually doing it and so wants to pretend it isn't necessary.

The steam algorithm will sniff out your game's mediocrity with astonishing speed and flatline it. Now your marketing skills will really have a chance to shine, given that Steam sure isn't going to send you any traffic.
Good luck converting those facebook ad impressions and views from the one or two streamers you convinced to play your terrible-looking game, though.

This is shrimple, if you can only choose two skills to be great in and assuming 0 means you can't do it at all.
>Programming
>3d art
These two synergize best and allow you to make a videogame.
Not all games need levels, networking, story, or even music.
You only need one art style so pixel and hand are redundant. I chose 3d because programmatically animated 2d looks like pure, liquid Redditor diarrhea.
Audio elements and marketing are best suited for specialized subcontractors.

They were forced to implement refund policy by law, so this one's not their fault.
What is their fault is how they've brainwashed people so much that customers legitimately think Valve implemented refunds because of pro-consumer views and not because they were forced to by law, conveniently forgetting how many years they didn't have refunds and how many millions they spent fighting in court against refunds.

Were they forced a "no questions asked within 2 hours" policy by law? I get that they had to add them but I doubt Australian law demanded them to go about it in this particular way.
This also doesn't justify reasons such as "not fun" or "purchased by accident" being present.

The average is around 10%.
And I like that the refund policy is so generous because I want players to take a chance on my game.

>refund policy completely fucks over devs, valve claims refund system is not "for trying out games" yet lets users refund for reasons such as "not fun" or "purchased by accident" (yeah like that fucking happens)
I have more players that have bought the game and never opened it than I have refunded purchases.

what the hell does steam do with all the money from the 30% cut of 120,000 games? they sure arent using it to pay their employees (they make $50M profit per employee) or help indie devs or even AA/AAA devs in any way

you saying this gives me deja vu. ive heard others say this over the years here and elsewhere. every time i hear it, i remember something strange, like some past life matrix simulation thing, where i was watching a video of a really old lady like 70 year old on youtube explaining why steam having a leniant refund policy is a good thing, and that we're thinking about it wrong, and that it's good because it makes more players take a chance on our game. it was surreal because a 70 year old woman was explaining it. so every time someone says what you just did, i have this deja vu.

And it's only this big because Valve allows gamertards to abuse the refund system heavily.
For example you should not be allowed to refund the game for reasons such as "not fun" has a demo or "purchased by accident" if it's not included in any bundles.
Don't want to do that? Then don't factor in refunds in promotion algorithms, because they get heavily skewed by retards just like reviews are.

>>
i've spent roughly the last six months studying and experimenting with game design and i think the main conclusion i've come to is that the only thing that makes a game truly bad is confusion
when you're confused you don't know how long it'll take to solve the problem and that stresses people out
people don't generally enjoy stressful games, and the stragglers of that demographic are already fully captured by PvP games and speedrunning
minimize confusion and your game will be enjoyed

There's a balance you gotta strike, if the solutions are too obvious you just bore people, but if they're too complex then they'll just drop the game

It's a two way street however. Sure the game shouldn't be too confusing but the player also shouldn't be a retard. And what you'll find is 90% of players are retards. Even something as requiring the players to pay attention to the character dialogue or be attentive to the environment is too much. It's why AAAs have obnoxious UIs spelling everything out, and why vampire survivors clones are popular (they are extremely basic design wise and don't confuse retards due to their primitivism.

this is also true, but although it's only one game, the success of skyrim indicates that people are very tolerant of linear experiences if the game has intrinsic appeal elsewhere, such as the art, or the story, or the atmosphere, or the mechanics
confusion can be good if the game is deliverately designed for it, like a puzzle game, but there are some cases where it's completely negative, such as if the player lacks any meaningful sense of direction
i think the fantasy experience the game proposes relates to how much confusion is permitted, but it's a hard balance to find
good game design is very difficult

this relates to what i said in >>547939116 about skyrim being extremely simple and still widely appreciated
i think the industry in general skews heavily towards the casual audience, people who enjoy confusion are in the extreme minority
a good way to gauge general player preference on this is to find games of varying complexity and check their completion rates through steam achievements
it's common for clicker games to have something like 90%+ completion rates, while games with steep learning curves are lucky to have a 50% completion rate of the very first mission
i think cruelty squad, a confusing game, has a ~30% completion rate of the first mission after the tutorial or something absurd like that

1. Apples and oranges absolutely can be compared.
2. Gamers with 80 IQ learn and play games far more complicated than whatever garbage you're making. If they are struggling to learn your game, then your game is simply doing a terrible job at teaching and/or motivating them to learn. (e.g. If it's obvious your game is janky/ugly/low-quality/short/low-content, why the fuck would they want to put in the effort to learn it?)

Not even present ingame, I don't believe there are any mirrors (I only played the first level or two in the demo thoughbeit, since I was unable to buy the game) just got a diverse individual doing the screaming algorithm face for marketing purposes.
I don't know what think tank or agency is advising people to do this but when I see the based face on a promotional piece of art it has an anti-buy effect. When you compound that by making the character not a man and not White it just goes beyond anything my suspension of belief can allow.

Around 100 games release on Steam alone EACH DAY.
About 700 games in the week around your release.
AAA release? Successful release AAA or indie, in your genre? BOOM you are done.
Also, not only are you competing with other new releases, but the entire backlog of games on every system a player owns. :)

Take all the "indie success stories" you can think of in the past 10 years and divide it by the number of devs in that time who have tried (again, 100 games a day, 3000 a month) and there's your historical likelihood of "making it."

Steam cut, higher self-employment taxes, no benefits, no retirement, AND to top it all off: Your sales diminish over time, so even if you hit this "mediocrity lottery" you'll have to do it all over again in a couple years.

How difficult is GameMaker's programming language to learn if you have no programming experience?

in truth, game maker language is ugly. and that ugliness in my opinion makes it harder to understand. javascript, in my opinion, is similar to game maker language but much prettier and overall easier to learn in my opinion. what's not as easy is creating your javascript project, aka setting it up to be able to make your games. not easy compared to game maker at least. but we're talking about the language itself, well, game maker language is pretty ugly even by python standards, which it is also very similar to. however its fine, doesnt matter that much.

anyway to be clear, game maker language is definitely in the top 20% of easiest languages to learn for game dev. along with python and javascript and others.

AI coding assistants probably know vastly more javascript than game maker code though btw. and AI is going to help you learn a lot faster so...

and im not trying to steer you toward javascript, but you probably dont know that you can accomplish basically the same thing Game Maker provides by downloading VSCode and Tiled Map Editor and Phaser game library (javascript game library) and set up the project to have instant reloading upon changes, you test your game in a browser but its not -necessarily- a browser game because it can easily be exported as an exe and put on steam. yet it is infinitely more flexible than Game Maker.

don't ever reply to me again pedo
>>
>>547947665
one reason its infinitely more flexible than game maker is because with javascript you have access to the vast NPM Library of javascript libraries for every conceivable purpose, including any purpose regarding games, so you need to code much less features yourself and instead stitch together existing libraries that already cover your features. game makers library does not even come close. NPM Library is the largest on earth.

and btw i know C# and use it all the time but I found learning C# to be 3x harder than javascript because of all the features it has that js doesnt
