In the span of approx. 2 years 1 million app ids have been created on Steam. Imagine all those app IDs were purchased by devs that follow through on releasing their games in a reasonable time frame. Even if 20% are DLC, that's 800k games. 800k! Last year around 18k games released. Imagine that number jumped to just a mere 200k games (25% of the 800k app IDs).

Can anyone explain to me any downsides with using vertex lighting instead of lightmaps? Because I can bake lighting in blender directly onto the vertex colors of my meshes, and it's a lot easier to deal with than baking a lightmap directly in godot. I don't use Godot but lightmaps are usually coupled with some kind of automated probe system that allow dynamic objects to have the same general lighting as depicted in the lightmaps.
If you don't need that or if Godot lets you deal with it in an alternate way than vertex colors are probably a fine alternative especially if you're going for a retro look.

It's fine though I generally wouldn't be using colliders for weapons anyway. I would be using traces with some interpolation instead. Weapons just move so fast that you'll likely be missing hit detections all the time.

Listen anon, the "aesthetic" you're cooming over is literally just heavy exponential height fog and overblown bloom masking PS2 draw distance limitations, so stop overthinking it and just learn to model simple brutalist primitives. You don't need high-res PBR or Nanite for this, you need to master scale and vertex painting because that's how they faked the lighting and grit without tanking the framerate. Just greybox the layout first to make sure the traversal isn't walking-sim trash, bake your lightmaps so the shadows look soft and dreamy, and desaturate your palette, otherwise you're just going to make another soulless Unity flip and then come back here crying when you get filtered by a default cube.

I wanted to warn about a scam going on the v3expo discord some moderator is pming users and offering to give away 1 year of claude code and comet browser to make gamedev easier. They then give you invite link to comet browser which gets them 3 dollars and then they tell you to login with your gmail account, they tell you to login on mobile first to sync your mobile data like gmail, contacts, etc to it. Then this google account will be connected across multiple devices and they will steal your your data.
I tried telling the owner of the discord but he blocked my private messages.

Just finished playing Baseball manager simulator, football manager simulator, princess maker, and other menue games like loop hero, reign her majesty and some chess parodies like pawnbarian, chess shotgun and chassarian.

Spent the weekend making a fog of war effect that can make enemies look all spooky until they're revealed. Looks like shit over the terrain though, and I need to smooth the blending when you reveal an area for the first time. Also the terrain textures should be simpler to match the character anyhow. And it needs natural particle effects. Much to be done.

use ambientCG or textures.com (paid) for textures. use Match Color in photoshop to make it seem like the textures all fit together (find a good base texture first that you want the others to conform to in terms of color, try not to use it too much though or scenes might look bland). pic related
might be worth downloading a fuckton of textures and setting them up in the Asset Browser in blender so you can just drag & drop onto objects, the people I follow do that. the Lemaitre guy below also does this for props so he can just drop stuff like a vent into a scene
for UVs, just select all and press U > Cube Projection to unwrap everything and scale the UVs until it looks good. for stuff that doesn't work on (photo of a door etc), abuse Project from View as much as possible
also a trick I and others use a lot is to use subdivided planes; select a vertex on the plane and use proportional editing to shape it. helps to constrict it to the Z axis when doing so. you can see in my image how I do that to make it look like sand is piled up in the corners and in the middle
it's mostly just limited cohesive textures and nice lighting

I just had the idea of what if you combine map autismo of like Hearts of Iron IV and Shit like King Crusaders 3 but make it about 16 teams of 16 anime girls each one into some made up global tournament of anime girls who happen to fight like football manager, mixed with your being the producer of Idol masters, and you do basically doofus jobs to earn items and gear for your current waifu team and you can train personally each waifu under a system similar to princess maker.

Yeah, there's a subtractive filter over everything there that the terrain colors probably would need to be corrected for. I'm deciding if I want it to be a "darkness" like that or more of a fog like this, which is way easier to tweak.

I'm doing all this instead of any kind of normal lighting because I want it to feel like you're "carving" through the fog, with it somewhat resisting where you're able to move and what monsters you can hit. But I still need to do a lot more to sell that.

The bad news is that doing procedural multileg creatures takes some setup. The good news is that once you've got it set up, you basically don't have to actually keyframe animate anything to get stuff with any number of legs walking. So bug/crab like creatures like that might wind up being less time consuming overall, if you plan to have several variants.

I made 10 templates so far; and i am going to create at least 50 or 25 before testing the generation script. Flax Engine seems promising and has like 7000 github stars and also asks nothing and is open source. I'm not entirely sure, but I think for 3D games, it looks completely on par with Godot. It's basically "free unity"

Someone explain to me why using the LPC sprites is bad :(
Besides the obvious problem of them being ugly. Their "architecture" is useful, I can use the existing sprites as placeholders and if I need better ones I can later use the same format and just add prettier ones, using the existing LPC sprites as fallback.

Solo project. I started practicing drawing around 16 months ago. Drew about 1-3h every day. Started working on the game last January with 0 programming experience, so I've had to refactor and redraw a lot. I don't really know how long it'll take still, I'm missing about 90% of the planned content, but most systems I've built should allow me to add stuff as fast as I can draw them. I still need a proper audio manager and some additions to progress tracking and a proper save system before I go ham on content. Should have something for the next DD

I watched that one Australian pixel art guy and his sculpting style of slowly forming shapes and adding detail clicked well. I also avoid using reference pictures for posing. I stand up and do a retarded version of the pose I want and make mental notes on things like which shoulder or hip is higher and then draw based on that. That way I get strong keyframes and avoid the boring rotoscoped look.

You need to do goal oriented drawing every day for a few months. An hour a day is enough as long as it doesn't turn into aimless doodling. taking days off is okay once you've gotten comfortable. You should draw the things you think you need to draw for your game. Try to combine things when applicable. Do posing for a week. then add details to them the next week. Then add a background and use grayscale to find unified palette that works...

I think I really needed to play board games, card games, and menu-based games, which are perfect to implement in 2003.
My mind was honestly unable to design mechanics like that because I had only ever played action games.
But really, if you take away the action combat and replace it with cards or stat-training like in Princess Maker, use job mechanics from Doofus and MMOs, swap combat for puzzles, or for finding lost items, or crafting a winning poker hand, or so many ideas that don’t involve combat, the possibilities of 2003 are actually very high.
As always, the problem lies in oneself, not in the tool.

Correct. One of the primary indicators of a high IQ is being able to extrapolate value from seemingly unrelated things. So taking inspiration for your game from other games of a totally different genre, or even inspiration from daily activities or random movies or music.

This is why low IQs are constantly having a tantrum about things they don't like. They are unable to extrapolate value from basically everything.

BTW what style of "ramp" do you 4chan guys prefer? One where the upper area sticks out like in the top example, or one where the ramp sticks out, like in the bottom example? Also there are cases where i am not cautious and both squares stick out, but i think that is the worst.
1) Walking is problematic but that is just a problem of finding or creating a better player controller, not of the terrain!


I could try to fix it by instead just creating one single object in blender, but so far i am still using unity since it's easy and fast and i'm still learning things! And if i dont create a single object, adjusting a ramp and the upper area to both not stick out is too much effort for me i think (for now).

You create traps in a dungeon, Nazarick style like in Overlord, and lure people to your tomb. They fall into your traps, and they either die there (and you loot their stuff!) or you keep them as "prisoners".
But instead of like Overlord, you are a sort of vigilante guy, luring grave robbers and criminals to the tomb where you prepared traps. So you are a good guy!

It's very early in development. There's a dungeon, a party of NPCs, and some basic ray casting path finding so they are wandering inside the dungeon (to simulate that they dont know the place). In the game it will be darker so it will make sense that they wont see shit.

I said darker because I was too focused on what I was doing. But generally you want farthest things to be blended with the sky color the most. And during the day the sky color is usually very light. You also want to reduce saturation the farther you go and consistently hueshift to warmer or colder depending on the scene.

I want to make a fan translation for an unreal engine game, how do I go about this? Is there a tool or something I can use? Trying to look it up all I can find is stuff that assumes you're the developer of the game with the source code. The actual dev of the game is also no longer around so I can't ask them about it.
