A game where you manage an underground political organization. Choose pacifism (propaganda, protests etc.) or violence (bombing, assassinations, kidnappings etc.). 2D, mostly map based, UI clicking, mostly text but not wall of texts, roguelike. A doctrines tech tree similar to the thoughts in disco elysium. Recruit agents, send them on missions, see the possible outcome chances beforehand, similar to event popups in CK3. Basically risk management.

Steam friends and recommended, most games that show up in my recommended feed are of a passing grade to where I will at least consider looking inside before writing them off.
I can see what games my friends own and what they recommend, I can read the reviews, I can check when the reviews were made and what the playtime was at time of review.
Not only that but the developers themselves can respond to critique if they want, it's got an integrated News feed, not that I've used it but maybe when Discord goes tits up I can use Steam as Voice Chat.
If the game my squad and I are going to play have integrated steamworks functionality we can just right click each others names and press join without having to navigate menus.
I get Steam cloud saves for free so that I can continue progress on any machine.
Sorting through DLC is trivial and doesn't redirect me to separate storefronts to try and upsell me shit left and right.
Steam Summer and Winter Sale are big reasons why, picking up items that's been sitting in your wishlist until they're 75% off can be a great way to pass time, sometimes there's themed sales which features solid titles, almost never AAA just about all of them indie, like if I've been looking for a Roguelike to play I can find one easier on the Roguelike sale.
Modding games is trivialized with Steam Workshop + creators can be compensated for their work, lots of cases of 3D artists making more money making Dota 2 and CSGO items than their regular jobs in island nations. And it doesn't require some retarded launcher with ads or setting up a git folder just to keep your modfiles up to date.

Conversely I navigate Itchio and just about every game looks like hot garbage because there's no barrier to entry, there are 9b nonprofit fangames of franchises I like but bastardized into crude abominations. GOG is the only "competitor" to Steam because they actually bother with pre-installed community patches for compatibility where it's needed.

They did and it was a long and arduous process, GOG was a real actual competitor for a long while and Humble Bundle was also bleeding them heavily. But they've consistently shown they're on the side of the customers and what you interpret as devotees are people showing goodwill towards being treated right.

>But they've consistently shown they're on the side of the customers
But they're not. They refused to add refunds until a literal court order forced them to. They're abusing their monopolistic position to force price parity on their own store to make sure games aren't sold for cheaper than Steam elsewhere (without involving keys), they've shown that you don't own your copies of the game on Steam, and given that the functionality to remove games from libraries already exists with keys, it's only a matter of time before they start removing games that aren't key bought. Not to mention how they continuosly ignored their game development side to the point of it becoming a meme and how even their flagship multiplayer projects are suffering from cheater abundance.
>>
>>557841791
Then they added refunds for everyone, including the places where they aren't legally required to. Based Valve.
>>
>>557841791
Did any other storefront offer refund policies? They also implemented the aussie standard globally, which depending on the day you say is a good or bad thing depending on if you think being on the side of the consumer is the same as enabling refund fraud. The main reason for cheater abundance from what I understand is their steam sales and VAC isn't a kernel-level anticheat which makes it easier to bypass but is way less risky for the consumer.
>>
>>557841791 (me)
I should also add that the addition of Early Access to the store and the subsequent lack of accountability for developers for abandoning games in EA is also not being on the customer side. And no, adding a notice for a lack of updates is not good enough accountability.
There's also the paid mods fiasco where gabencunt personally tried to push it and only backed down until the backlash got too severe. He tried to spin it as "encouraging better mods" but the reality is that he just simply wanted to monetize the Workshop and earn even MORE money through the hypothetical sales cut.
And also the fact that they don't check Steam games for having malware, as some recent controversies showed. That's basically 0 basic quality control. I don't know in what universe having absolutely no kind of quality control is considered "pro-consumer".

>>557842506
>including the places where they aren't legally required to
Because they didn't want to potentially run into similar legal issues in other countries down the road. You're incredibly naïve.
>>
>>557842582
>They also implemented the aussie standard globally, which depending on the day you say is a good or bad thing depending on if you think being on the side of the consumer is the same as enabling refund fraud.
I've already explained that they did this to basically cover their ass in other markets in advance to avoid potential other legal battles. But yes, refund fraud is also a problem. Nobody, not even in this thread, seems to care about the fact that Valve is not pro-consumer for the developer side of things.

If a game hasn't received updates in 12months while in EA then the buyer may request a refund, if you've played hundreds of hours it's less likely it will be approved as you've clearly paid for and enjoyed a service for more than it's money's worth.
>>557842816
virtually every other store you have to threaten support with your nations consumer protection rights, this is both better and cheaper in the long run as other storefronts hope that customers will give up after being stonewalled by support
>>
>>557842594
So they're anticipating laws that don't exist yet to avoid even the slight possibility of hurting the rights of customers? I can't see that as anything but incredibly based.
There are companies here that you HAVE to take into court to have even the rights GUARANTEED BY LAW to be respected and they still do it because they get more money from the people that can't be arsed to take it to court than they pay in fees from being sued. I know because my cousin used to work as a lawyer for one of them.

What kind of world are we living in? I know artists / creative guys sometimes have a day job working something else to pay the bills, but im fully convinced now even with a portfolio like this, dumping your soul for years practicing your craft for years doesn't guarantee you a position at all in the industry. The economy never favors entertainment shit at all and Anyone who manages to find success / work there is only supported by their parents since birth. Having rich parents mean jack shit nowadays. They rather send their money to someone else because their own children is le lazy and le worthless.

>>
>>557843345
>Is this really the case?
Seems more nuanced than I first believed, generally up to their discretion but the normal window is extended beyond the regular 14 day. There were a lot of people trying to scam Project Zomboid so they made it more strict, they would clock over 100h in EA, then when the game dropped they had less than 2h played on the release version so they'd get refunded. But in a lot of cases Steam Support refunds it anyway, and while Valve can just put a negative balance on your account withholding pay until your revenue passes they do also bill developers who've abandoned their projects after removing it from the steam store.
>>
>>557833726

I've got the urge to try and plan out my game again, I'm currently trying to figure out the best way to format/organise my game data.
Essentially I'm trying to design a 3D first person sandbox RPG game with some procedural map generation using Godot as the engine but my main barrier to progress is always a lack of direction about how I should categorise and access data about things in the scene.
I know its a lofty goal but I'm more interested in seeing how far I can get with my idea than actually pushing out a game so I'm aiming for something complex in scope.

So far I've decided the best way is to create an "info" class where I can put all of the details about an object (an "object" is anything whether thats an NPC, item, building, furniture etc) and then that info class can be accessed by a scene "register" system that adds anything I put into the game scene into an appropriate list/array/dictionary contained within a separate object organiser/manager class.
So essentially once I have that set up everything will be visible within organised groups to whatever needs to query it in the scene without messy searches for X child of Y component.

I'm rambling but I just felt like typing some shit to organise my thoughts.

I'm designing a roguelike, and I've been thinking on if I should include item rarity or not. Rarity as a concept is a little cliche especially for roguelikes, but it implicitly solves a few problems.
1. Rarity communicates item quality. An orange card in Slay the Spire gets the player excited, and for good reason, since it signifies that this is a powerful item. It also communicates to the player that if they don't grab it right away, even if it doesn't fit in their build, they might never see it again. This also has the secondary benefit of getting the player hyped and excited about your game when a rare item appears.
2. Rarity balances stronger items. This should be obvious, but if your most powerful items are the least likely to appear then the player is prevented from steamrolling the entire game.
3. Rarity prevents "dead shops" in games with currency. If Balatro's shops were always expensive, rare jokers then the player would never be able to afford anything early game. Having the item pool skew towards less useful but cheaper stuff almost guarantees the player can do SOMETHING in a shop. This is also somewhat true for games without explicit currency as well, since the best items are usually pretty situational and useless in the wrong build.

I've been trying to think of alternate systems that could accomplish these same things so elegantly without leaning on genre tropes. There are some examples I can think of from roguelike-adjacent games. Dominion, for example, shows you the entire item pool from the start, the bottleneck is just that you can't generate enough money per turn early on to buy the broken stuff right away. Super Auto Pets time gates the stronger pets so they only show up in the endgame.

This post is getting super long. Just wanted to share my thoughts and see if anyone else had been thinking about this at all.

That was the 80s. Kids used to program games on their school computers that would outsell big box games.
Today even the biggest indie games don't make as much money as TF2 does yearly and that's a game that makes so little money valve doesn't give a single shit about.

google is such dogshit
anyone know what tricks goldeneye used with its camera sway to mitigate the n64's low framerate?
>>
>>557862215
GoldenEye 007 used pronounced camera sway and head bobbing during player movement to simulate realistic motion, which helped mask the N64's notoriously low and variable framerate (often dipping to 10-15 FPS in multiplayer) by creating constant visual distraction that made stuttering less noticeable.
This technique, common in low-FPS first-person shooters of the era, worked alongside the system's built-in anti-aliasing blur to further soften jagged edges and motion, enhancing perceived smoothness despite the hardware limitations.
If you need anything else just grok it!

( nill == string.find in network data ) == false statement.
How do I unfuckulate this? Because it's obtuse as hell. If the string doesn't exist is not true, then exicute code. The problem is that if the string exists, it doesn't evaluate to true. Plz no bully.

You are doing the same as this

nil == string.find(...) will be false if found the string
you then are testing the result for false, so it will result true if the string is found

You are doing the same as:

if string.find(data, txt) then
-- this will only run if you found the txt in that data
run_code
end

but in a retarded way

Hmmm, but "if string.find(data, txt)" doesn't return as true (I'm 95% sure I tested this before and that's why I went in such a long roundabout stupid way). It comes back as "18 14". I know what I'll do, I'll check: type(string.find(data, txt)) == string (which should evaluate to true) . Brb in a couple hours. I'll try what you suggested first just incase i botched it the first time.

Eric has talked about how he went with an out of the box idea(and name) because he wants to give some pause to people who would play the stardew guy's next game no matter what, to give himself a bit of challenge in actually winning them over.

https://youtu.be/ITr5soI7liU?t=377&si=AuGJ1EQmNEhFZjl8

And I think he just likes doing things by feeling without overthinking on a rational level. A lot of good art is made that way.
Also, as an example, the lord of the rings isn't actually about rings, the rings are merely a story device, if it had been lord of the bracelets or necklaces the spirit of the story would remain the same. In the same vein I don't think haunted chocolatier is actually about chocolate, it just gives him a something to work with where he can layer the actual sauce of the idea which I'm assuming has more to do with wonder and mystery and feeling than with sugary cacao

I don't really get why people hate steam?
If it's so bad, why don't us indie devs just unionize?
We should be able to argue better deals like more internal marketing, better quality control to stop hindie devs from shitting everything up, tapering sales, bundle agreements, etc.
More money could be made on both sides, genuinely.
It's seriously a fucking horrible time for technology lately, and steam hardware has basically been fucked, so we're going to be in a market that prefers 5 dollar games (so 4.99 to 8.99) that are well optimized from older hardware while still having appeal and engagement.
Valve is actually going to need to focus more on software instead of hardware, and it all starts with us devs that basically produce 50% of their value.
I have like 2 thousand dollars worth of steam games, I still just play indie games on my steam deck and fromsoftware games. Like after seeing my stats I realized I should stop buying games and I did. I never even bought any of your games I only played them from keys (osur still fucking owes me a key).
We need to form a Union with Union leaders who are real GMI devs like eric barone and jon blow, especially with their software experience and pull I think they would be literate enough to help valve a lot.

Artists responded to AI by blocking it on a ton of huge sites. It wasn't just unknown artists who made a big deal about it but rich and respected industry veterans who would be fine either way. That would never happen with game devs.

The 'Females are the emotional ones' stuff is just Sitcom propaganda.

We males just hide our emotions better due to understanding that crying about it isn't going to do anything.
>>
>>557883776
I mean I appreciate it but artists responded differently.
You had industry vets blocking out their entire gallery with anti-AI images, moving to sites that respect them even at great cost to themselves, and calling out the industry for pushing it.
We should be calling out valve every single day for allowing that filth on their store.
>But the label
Which becomes more and more lax every day. We went from no AI allowed period to any use of AI requiring a label to AI code and concept art allowed with no label. Only a matter of time before the label is removed entirely and I guarantee you there will be more pushback from gamers than gamedevs when that happens.

>AI is projected to be able to work consistently for entire week long tasks in just a few years
>If there's no one to buy new paper contracts the old contracts that assumed there will always be new ones to fill voids will fucking explode
Yeah this isn't an AI bubble, the entire country was sitting on a truclear bomb
Even the deep state kabals and oligarchs are running naked with their dicks in the wind. Some of the tech leaders themselves have admitted that they just hoping AI can figure it out once it's good enough so they're just hyper focusing that one thing. The tech leaders are literally begging people to just be ok with it because they are already too deep. They hired a bunch of indians but those indians are already becoming obsolete. There is no going back.
The window for GMI is basically narrowing super fast.
This is genuinely era changing and everyone will just call me a fucking schizo. But they're pricing us out of hardware, they making openly fraudulent contracts because they know contract paper economy will fucking die, data centers will be the most value thing in the world. I just woke the fuck up so hard. The reason they're pushing high param LLMs isn't because they think it's the best, it's because it doesn't fucking matter. It'll be faster and easier to make giga networks that have 1% emergence of self improvement able to do years worth of worth at all levels within weeks but that's multiplicative behavior. that 1% can quickly become 1000% percent in years until it becomes this monster that isn't a 100T parametrized LLM but something we can't even comprehend because it did decades worth of labor of hundreds of PhDs within a few years.
I finally understand what singularity means, I may be one of the few people who actually realized this that it's not not some scifi bullshit, it's actually mathematically extremely simple.

it sounds like you may want an abstract Enemy class, with Goblin and Orc classes that inherit from it
maybe the Enemy class has an abstract specialAttack() method, and Goblin.specialAttack() calls a method you create on the Goblin class, Goblin.goblinPunch(), while Orc.specialAttack() calls Orc.orcChop()
this is not necessarily right, just the first thing that came to mind from reading your posts

Interesting. Let me explain my architecture at least. I have three customizable scripts for enemies
>EnemyMotor, which basically governs the logic behind the enemy's actions. IE if it's this far from me, it'll use this attack, or if it "Sees" me, then it'll send out THIS attack and so on.
>EnemyCombat. The actual combat dynamic it has, such as a list of attack types and how they work, along with the enemy taking damage. Also handles playing animations
>EnemyController, which is how it moves around, handles gravity, and so on with the physics. Also handles executing attacks from my Switch-Case.
I'm not sure how I could work in a theoretical "Enemy Class" in the way you describe it, but it's a concept that could help if expressed differently given my architecture.
About the best thing I could think of to do would be to create several different types of attack separated by enemy, such as "ChickenSlash" and "OgreSlash." This would make it easier to differentiate animations at least.

If you use oop then make a skill object, give it a name and id, give it a list of other ids as unlock requirements
Then on your player add a list of unlocked skill ids and add any skills the player should have by default
Write a function to check if a skill is unlockable by seeing if the player unlocked skill list contains the entire unlock requirements list
You could also write a lock / unlock skill helper function that accepts a skill name or id and adds that skills id to the player’s id list
Elsewhere in your code you can flesh out skill effects by referencing the ids

correct me if i'm wrong, i don't know if this is the "right" way in GDscript which i've never used before
but it seems like you'd create an Enemy scene with EnemyMotor, EnemyCombat, and EnemyController nodes, then scenes that inherit from Enemy ("ChickenEnemy" and "OgreEnemy" scenes)
and then the logic that's specific to ChickenSlash gets implemented in a node which has the same name, but different scripts, in the ChickenEnemy and OgreEnemy scenes
then the spawner instantiates 100 new ChickenEnemy scenes per second and we're gaming

admitting you didnt do anything is its own form of progress

>>
Many people have argued over this over the years, but I think we can pinpoint c# as the instant when the gaming industry went off the rails. Now when we moved away from assembly, I was a bit disappointed, but I got it. Computers improved, compilers improved, and we could accept a bit of hll here and there where performance wasn't crucial. But C#? A VM based, GCed, mother fucking OOP language? Are you kidding? That's when this industry went to shame. Right there.

I can't really post any progress because it looks the same, but now the underlying system has become much more easily modified and I can actually build a thing. Heh

Today I added:
The start of sanitation on user input.
A monitor to check if the network packets are making it to the client.
A chat text box.
A very slightly more random number generator.
Made the code a bit more readable.
Added a handful of comments.
Tomorrow the plan is to finalize adding the chat function. If there is time, I'll work out on paper how I'll get the different game screens to draw in such a way I can make it easy to add new adventures in the future.... Either that or I'll brute force it with determination and ignorance!

Daily donutpost.
Again started the day with some housework to get an easy win and some momentum going. Not too much though, so I don't feel I've done enough for the day.
I'm dreading the time I'll have to actually market my game. It's contrary to my personality I guess. It's like saying "Hey, look at my shit, it's great! I'm proud of it and I want you to know about it because it's so great!" It's like people who clap for themselves, like everybody's clapping for someone and than the person they're clapping for is also clapping. Or people who get in great shape and then post shirtless photos, like "Look at me! I look great!" I mean it's not an illogical way to act and in case of marketing it's obviously necessary, but it just feels wrong to me. I'm more of an "aw shucks" kind of person, maybe to a crippling degree. Maybe it's be easier if my game actually looked great, but obviously that's not realistic for an artlet solo dev. I can't get myself to promote even my previous game which did okay, so it's not garbage.
>>

And a week ago I had what I thought was a health emergency and they did my blood work with cholesterol and hb1ac and everything's right in the middle of healthy ranges. Really surprised me, I thought my doctor was gonna tell me to take it down like two notches but my metabolism is telling me to stay the course.

>“Recently, I’ve become aware of how little tolerance Japanese users tend to have,” he wrote. “For example, one of our released games had a bug. In response, overseas players wrote reviews like, ‘There was a bug. But it was fun, so 5 stars!,’ and would even email us videos of the bug. Meanwhile, a Japanese user who encountered the same bug wrote in their review, ‘There was a bug. What a waste of my time,’ and then also sent an email saying it had been a waste of their time.” Murakami went on to say that his attempt to apologize and troubleshoot with the user just earned him another rude email telling him to “figure it out himself.”

Absolute beginner, but I have a game idea and started to learn godot. How "out of my mind" am I for trying to make the following game?
-managerial game about running an adventurers guild
-interface being "fnaf like" where you switch between 5 screens (in a cross pattern) via wasd to reach specific functions (middle screen is the general info screen, the rest specialized)
-main focus being forming, sending out, following up on and handling adventuring parties
-make adventurer generation relatively simple but extensively interplaying (like an adventurer's attitude towards looting, other races/gender, etc clashing with another party members leading to a "crisis" that you have to handle)
-maybe have a system for a region's geography, factions and history generation
-potentially have the above system expand the game world from revealed starting regions as game progresses

nah. bokube has deep lore and 50 levels. AI prompting really struggles with level design, it has no empathy, no idea what the level is like to play. that said you could get AI to make you a tool to make levels with, but you still would have then make them..

Depends 100% on how deep you are going with
>-potentially have the above system expand the game world from revealed starting regions as game progresses
And how complex your system is going to be.

That being said, it sounds like a solid beginner game with a cool premise. (Limiting your game to only a couple of rooms/screens is very good way to contain your game's scope.)
I was working on the opposite of what you were doing, you hire monsters to defend a dungeon in a "Papers Please" format based on their traits and the invading adventurer party. However I couldn't for the life of me get the gameplay loop to actually feel fun, so I pivoted to just making a turn-based tactics game where you actually control the monsters and set up traps to confront the adventurers.

Anyway here's 2 games I know about similar in "spirit" to what you're saying, maybe they can serve as inspo. One is also a turn-based tactics game while the other is a deduction puzzle game.

Thanks.
The idea would be that the pc inherits a communication orb and starts up a small adventurer guild, where the main scene would be a desk with the orb zappin in "notices" of events where you could advise them what to do (then the orb zaps out the notice). Ideally there would be a tard wrangling element (a spontaneous party could disregard your advice and do what they "want" for example)

And the progression would be automation of tasks (like filtering incoming notices through a "trash wyvern" that would burn notes that you set), or an process fairy that would auto select choices for you in certain cases (like always retreating when a party finds a new monster/dungeon)

I've still to properly familiarize myself with godot so for now i'm doing their step by step tutorials and noting down ideas in the meantime.

Ok, so you are going to eat an elephant. Maybe start with a spoonful? Do you know python? If you know python you will have a better chance of thinking programmat... goodly! And you will be set for gdscript. Personally, I recommend finishing a free introduction to python course from cocecademy. Try and convert each example to GD script along the way. Add your own flair to familiarize yourself with the engine. Use and familiarize yourself with the Godot docs.

kek, I am aware i'm biting off more than i can currently chew. I used to write very basic python scripts to randomize shit for my ttrpg's, so i think i should be able to understand the very basics (also went through the interactive gdscript thing in a day). Actually using it for a game i assume will be a fair bit more involved however.

>>557950443
I'm still thinking of how to implement the "road" to progression per say. Currently i'm thinking something simple (like money or a "reputation" system where succesful adventuring/questing earns you the points to upgrade.) Ultimately I think a player should be able to do that, but at the same time i kinda want it to be more "what do i want to do atm" kinda deal instead of automate literally everything.
Since i can draw a little i'm thinking of doing 2d POV backgrounds and characters that have some basic animation (like the trashwyvern sleeping on your desk and blowing fire to immolate a note you set to ignore when it's getting zapped in by the orb). I'll focus those kind of animations mostly on the main desk though, it being the main playable area.
For inspiration i guess a lot of things, but if i had to pick a main one it would b elunatic dawn series and how the npc interaction/barebones storyline/event system makes you focus more on the character's stories instead of the big picture.

This may look like the same level I've posted a few days ago, but I've heavily reworked the game's logic (especially the monsters) to use a something resembling a turn system. I had to do this because I was tired of dealing with race conditions. Also, I've tweaked this level's design to actually be completable.

Watching streamers has made me realize there are some very, very stupid people playing games
Do I make it retard accessible or keep it intellectual? Is there a way to do both?
>>
>>557954171
Farm clips by having an "easy mode is now selectable" pop up after players fuck up enough times or take too long. That way every single retarded streamer with millions of viewers will have an epic rage compilation of your game calling them retarded and you'll get free marketing that way.

>The Fortnite developer announced today that they've acquired Meshcapade, a German startup focusing on using AI technology to assist in animating digital 3D models using real-world camera footage. The acquisition is expected to aid in future Unreal Engine and Metahuman updates, but make no mistake - Epic Games is investigating how they can use generative AI across the entire company.
>Epic Games is also in the process of integrating generative AI tools into the development of new cosmetics, a move which has upset some - if not most - of the games' developers. The extent of this integration is unknown. It is said that this will enable Epic to deliver more Outfits and collaborations to players than we've seen in previous years - an excuse that is unlikely to satisfy the growing crowd of players who feel the game is already adding too many.
It is very likely that when Epic integrates AI art tools into Unreal valve will remove the AI label

well, 'the moral' of the story is usually only apt for short ones, ideally a game would have enough to chew on that you can gleam several morals or ideas from it
for me it'll probably be a basic "ignore the doubters, you can reach greater heights" type thing.
