What would sound like good ideas for an NDS rom hack that isn’t just a higher difficulty version?
>>
>>56474055
I like this idea more for hoenn but what if team Magma/Aqua plan was a success and the region was altered by the team objective. Make it a sequel 5 years later and explore the ramifications of it on the world like pokemon being extinct new regional variations caused by the changes, of course map changes, overall populace opinion of pokemon being bad and they hate them now and exclude them from their cities and so on.

Adapts this concept for Sinnoh/johto with some legendary and go with it.

Are there any hacks that actually let you use your full team for longer than the E4+maybe the last gym?
And i don't mean a victory lap ala Kanto in gen 2 where everything is piss easy, i mean more like Clover where stuff actually scales to your level and remains challenging.
Preferably if its an actual game and not a pure autism check like Radical Red

>>giving in to the pressure of their crowd to change the sprites back to brendan and may and other stuff
The sprites were Ethan and Lyra from the jump, it changed because the dev became aware of the gen 2 renditions of the gen 3 protags existing.
Also the 1.0 battle backgrounds were better so it's good they got changed back anyways.

how do I edit in gender forms (either stats wise but even just appearence wise) in pokecrystal?
>>
>>56476745
Nope, I've never felt compelled to change the skin colour of a character to match mine if the game doesn't already give me the option. In Unbound and Prism with customization sure, but I don't try changing it in canon games or hackroms with OC's like Gaia or Glazed. Loser behaviour.
>>
>>56476783
Not without making lots of changes.
>>
>>56476790
I asked hoping someone else already did it. I'm ok with using the 16 bit expansion if that's necessary. I like GSC graphic and vibes much more that's why I'd rather use pokecrystal than pokemerald

Polished has support for alternate forms.
But if you want to keep it more vanilla, you can look at how Unown forms are determined and try to make something similar for gender forms. Would probably be easier because you'd just have to check for the attack DV.
>>
Maybe if you faggots decided to do the work and actually make something you could decide the skin colors of everything. For all your bitching about trannies they put in the hard yards to create romhacks.
>>
>>56476810
Good idea. I'd rather avoid using DVs to keep up with newer developments. Although I dislike that polished crystal isn't using the 16 bit version of pokecrystal. I wonder how easy it is to fork the gender form changes from pokecrystal to the 16 bit version

yeah I was just trying to move on because I felt like I already explained myself sufficiently but apparently not. like I said earlier I'm just not a fan of type changes in general and it's not much deeper than that. I'm willing to give it a pass if the hack is centered around those kinds of changes, but I don't want to have to relearn types for a hack that is otherwise selling a vanilla experience. as for why it can't be a rebalance and an aesthetic hack, well I would rather a hack that just does one thing well instead of two.things half assedely, and also the aforementioned reasons.

>>
>>56480949
I wouldn't worry too much about a story, focus on worldbuilding. It's Pokemon, the bar for writing has never been particularly high.
>>
>>56480949
>evil teams
Keep it simple. We don't need some world ending scenario or anything super elaborate involving a legendary.
>how connect regional forms
Don't. They're here, that's good enough.
>>
>>56479583
My favorite was when I pulled it a year ago and several of the "improved" animation particles introduced a bug that would crash the game in the next 1-3 Pokemon switch-in, making some battles like Maxie at Mt Chimney (Flame Burst was one of the affected moves) a legitimate dice roll as to if I could finish the battle.
I disabled the updated animation particles, boom no crashing the entire playthrough. The kicker? The "improved" particles look like ass.
Expansion is useful at the base level of code interactions and structure. But be aware that every "neat" feature you enable is fraught with the risk of poorly-implemented unnecessary trash you're better off doing yourself. I only use it to get the Pokemon + movepool expanded, then audited every new ability for bugs. I've found several, which I've had to submit pushes for to the Master, only for them to decline the push.
Just be aware with any code that convenience almost always equals SOMETHING goofy/broken, especially because they are chained to adding everything every gen without extensively testing.
They really should fork the releases by gen gimmicks they're adding.

>>
>>56480990
Yeah I ended up implementing some gen 9 moves before they were even revealed like psychic noise (but poison type)
I think things like commander, which I wanted to use, were out of my expertise
But for the most part, a lot of the gen 9 moves/abilities probably aren't really that hard to implement in hindsight
I'm using all fakemons too, so I didn't even need the sprites/stats
I did have to rework the 100+ moves I added because they changed move definition format
God knows how painful it's going to be to test everything again once I get it built
>>
>>56481040
>What do you mean with focus on wordbuilding?
like the other anon said, focus on the story behind the world itself. assuming you're doing an original region, give some thought to the history behind towns, what role each town plays in the region culturally and economically. think about how the region would develop around certain geographic features, and how all this impacts people's lives in the region. think about who lives in the region and their relationships with eachother and the environment.
you don't have to write a dialog explaining the region's tax policies or anything like that, but just having this stuff in the back of your head while you're making maps, writing filler dialogue and placing NPCs will make everything in your game feel more thoughtful, and the region feel lived in and immersive.

I think this is arguably more effective than trying to write a mindblowing plot. because let's be honest, there's only so much you can do with the plot in Pokemon before you risk it feeling too edgy, too meta, or otherwise uncanny and un-Pokemon like. it's a fine line to walk. and truthfully, most romhackers aren't exactly great writers. especially when they're struggling to even come up with a concept to begin with. no offence, that's just the way it is.
when you think of why regions like Kanto, Johto and Hoenn are remembered, it's not really because of the plots. it's because of the regions themselves and how immersive they were, they felt like real places that could be inhabited by real people and made you want to be in those settings. I think it's a quality that a lot of hacks are missing. a lot of fan regions just feel like a collection of maps, and randomly placed NPCs. so if you can nail that, I think that gives you a real selling point for your game.

Challenge sections are easy to implement:
>Beat gauntlet without any Pokemon fainting
>Beat gauntlet with only 3 Pokemon
>Exit cave having never used a healing item
It's good to have areas that can be "reset" and/or populated with random trainers.
If you want to get more involved challenges going, consider implementing curses/boons:
>Pokemon only heal back to 50% HP but EXP is set to x2
>EXP multiplier for every consecutive trainer battle without visiting PC

Wondering if I should make custom moves to go with my full fakedex.

How badly would making something that replaces moves like Scratch and Pound into something that does less upfront damage but affects stats? IE: Scratch now is 20 BP but lowers target's Attack by 1 stage. Or if it was something more like Scratch now is 50 BP but lowers your Defense by 1 stage?

Would it make them too weak/strong compared to traditional move options once you start hitting the upper 20s to 30s, or would it just not make a difference and be more work for the same outcome?
>>
>>56486832
Scratch/Pound are generic early game moves you run before you get access to better options. They're fine as they are.
>>
>>56486832
I don't see how Scratch would affect stats at all.
It's fine just being a basic move. I'd personally leave it be and look at how Tackle was historically handled- give it slightly higher damage and worse accuracy. I have no idea what you would do with Pound.
>>
>>56486841
>>56486851
Say I wanted a decently slower leveling curve at the start that starts to ramp up. Would keeping the generic early game moves make this more boring and unappealing? Or should I just not bother with it and keep the pacing to how it is normally?
>>
>>56486861
I always found the early-game Tackle mirrors to be rather dull. There's some benefits to making levels take longer to hit, but the biggest problem I'd find is being stuck with the same Pokemon and moves for too long. You could supplement that a little bit by making a bunch of cheap and abundant TMs that contain generally weaker moves, and offer those very early in the game.
>>
>>56474165
>>56474171
You people are obsessed. Quit talking about him.
>>
>>56486874
I see. What moves would you recommend that wouldn't upset the balance of a slow and low-leveled start?

I was considering having the beginning of the game be decently tough where trainers are slightly stacked in their AI and decent movepools (nothing Radical Red-tier by any means), and let the difficulty sort itself out once you get more access to different Pokemon, TMs, and items; while also lessening the penalty for losing in accordance.
>>
>>56486897
Look at what gens 1 & 2 did.
>>
>>56486901
I don't follow.
>>
>>56486917
Both of the Game Boy gens had a lot of low-power TMs that fit well into the early game.
>>
>>56486919
You're going to have to define "early game" because the first 3 gyms had very little going for their stretches last I recall.
>>
>>56486921
Moves <60 BP
>>
>>56486935
I see. I'll try to plot out what I want to do with the gyms first and then design route encounters and TM availability based on both as alternate possible solutions to the gym's difficulty "puzzle" while keeping some satisfying options to levy the difficulty.

Thanks, appreciate the insight.

He'll never open source it because people with actual talent would steal "his" thunder.
Quotation marks, because the only thing Seaglass has going for it is its graphics, and they weren't created by him.
>>
>>56487038
This always seems to happen with hacks that explode in popularity.
>>
>>56487043
And they all need to be punished for this behavior.
>>
>>56487038
And Seaglass’s graphics aren’t even particularly impressive. The overworld tileset doesn’t fit Hoenn. The battle backgrounds have a style clash. The rest of the game is just vanilla assets edited to have limited colours with inconsistent rules to how colours are applied, like they were just churned through a script that reduces colour depth. This is because the creator doesn’t actually have talent on his own. The technically impressive assets come from other artists and programmers.

But who cares, anyway? 99% of players in this scene have very low standards.
>>
>>56487080
Ultimately players are scared of innovation. They don’t desire original experiences. And this is why the quality of the scene has decreased since the Emerald decomp became usable.
>>
>>56487089
Hence Seaglass, which is actually just a Radical Red clone skinwalking as a nostalgic gameboy retro throwback (which is does half-heartedly) is popular, whilst the likes of Coral, qdex, et cetera are not. It’s cheap crap.

A lot of early game moves suck, but they have a degree of character that a generic "Attack" button doesn't have.
Personally I don't care if they're mechanically redundant, and you can always give each of them a minor buff or change to make them distinct.
>>
>>56487201
You're seeing this the wrong way then.
Adding a universal attack command that functions as a Normal (or typeless, up to you) low BP move allows you to toy with early game learnsets way more. Because of the lack of PP for said command, you would also have far greater freedom to design your game around PP management.
If this is Gen 2, then all the better, since you can add more moves that actually do things and aren't filler.
The only limit is yourself, but personally, I think purposefully making the early game experience boring filler is bad design that far too many RPGs fall into for the sake of "progression".

I noticed a small inconsistency with Peridot. There's a postgame key item that allows you longer Safari games. The game gives you 999 steps when you select this option, but the start menu only shows 500. Of course, I'd want to be a Gen 3 hack since I think a gen 4 hack would deviate from Kanto's identity too much. In that same vein I wouldn't want there to be that big of a difficulty increase and wouldn't want new gen shit in it.

What did Let's Go add aside from the super trainers?
>>
>>56492821
>The og female trainer option being a rival, which was kind of also merged with Green. Even if she only appears as a secret boss.
>Some story events with Gym Leaders and Elite 4 members showing up before you'd normally meet them. Like Loreli appears on route 10 to defeat team rocket.
>Rocket Admin Archer appears
It's not much really, but I would like to see little things like this which add to the story included and it's what I really expect from a remake, not just some 1:1 rehash of the same games or some butchering of it by adding too much future gen stuff.
Of course I'd want the female rival to play a part in the story as well, that might be a bit much, but she was supposed to be a character originally anyways but was cut in the beta.
I'd also like to see the other Rocket Admins appear, Let's go did some things right and honestly my biggest problem story wise with Gym Leaders and the Elite 4 in that they so often do nothing and stand around.
The anime's team rocket jessie, james, and mewoth also appear. But that's a neutral point I'm fine with them being there and not being there.

Anime Team Rocket showed up in Yellow too.

It's gonna be difficult to find a gen 1 remake using the gen 3 engine that doesn't add new gen shit, I'm afraid.
There are gen 1 romhacks that add some stuff on top of the original games, though.

Does that number go up just with page views? I thought it only would when you clicked the download button.
There's a ninja update for the Safari Zone step issue I brought up yesterday.
>>
>>56492999
From my testings they do count page views, yeah. Unless Mediafire employees download shit off their users as soon as a download link is generated and before it even goes public. Who knows. I refuse to test it further because it triggers my autism.
And thanks. Will update tomorrow.

instant L, massively overrated game.
i grew up with RSE, never thought they were that good. GSC were much more fun.
>>
>>56493898
that's cool but you realize the post you're responding to, was in response to a hypothetical Hoenn remake for DS? so if you don't like RSE, you were never going to like that idea to begin with.

his point was there's not much that a DS remake could do that hasn't already been done in Emerald hacks. it would essentially just be a graphics overhaul, and not a very exciting one imo

Want to try a romhack; haven't played any yet. Looking at Unbound / Exceeded / Radical Red, but also some others. What do you think about the following:

R.O.W.E
Fire x Red Extended
Blue Stars 4
Emerald Crest
Hyper Emerald Lost Artifacts
Emerald Plus Plus
Black Pearl Emerald
Sword and Shield Ultimate Plus
Scorched Silver
Mega Hoenn Adventures
Autumn Orange

Only really care about having more mons like up to gen 8 or more, or new areas. Dont care for extra difficulty / nuzlocke

Playing Seaglass, how would I evolve Eevee into Umbreon with no day night cycle in this gen?

I forget Jessie, James, and Meowth are in Yellow.
But they're still something I don't mind either way, oh and Let's go added in rematch fights as well with FRLG didn't have.
