If a game doesn't give you good pokemon to counter an upcoming challenge or enough trainers to get exp on for that counter then you'll have a tougher time. People remember Whitney as being hard because they probably didn't have a Geodude or Gastly to counter her with for example.XY are seen as far less difficult because a lot of these limitations are removed. Most pokemon you get are really strong, you get handed a kanto starter and Lucario who are going to do well at handling a lot of things, and the exp share means all your other pokemon will be kept up to speed too. You don't have to worry about training up a weaker pokemon when they'll reach the same power level by sitting on the sidelines. TMs are plentiful and reusable top so you'll always be able to put strong moves on any pokemon you catch. There's no strong enemy teams that require any level of counterplay either, stuff like platinum Candice trying to make use of hail evasion or bw1 elesa volt switching back and forth so you couldn't focus on one pokemon. It's nothing super thought provoking but it's at least more than what XY does with its three move movesets
