I read "When I Win the World Ends". TWICE. This has never happened before. Immediately after finishing it, I started reading it again. I have no pretensions about the slop-ness of fanfiction as a medium, I feel a vague sense of disgust after finishing 99% of it. Actual works of literature like this are what makes it all worth it in the end. I've read Pokemon fanfic since I was barely able to read and this story is making me jealous I'll never be able to create anything even a tenth as good. My God, twenty years of reading Pokemon fanfiction and it was all worth it for this alone.

The author is probably never going to write another Pokémon fanfic unfort. The blurb doesn't really do it justice either. It's more like a meta-commentary on the stagnant nature of the franchise and the "sports man who always wins" mythos wrapped in a tournament arc with a cult plotline and sapphic rivalry in the center. The battles were apparently pre-planned in Showdown and I loooove it. I haven't seen anyone else doing dramatisized turn-based Smogon battles. Probably not everyone's cup of tea, but the game mechanic-y nature is justified in-universe and actually important for the narrative structure too. If you've ever raged because you lost a battle to a crit para full para this fic will twist the knife in.
