The trick is that this isn't actually a gacha, not really. nobody is spending money to get pokemon, because you can get basically any available one without spending. Not just within the game but even from dozens of different games which the audience is expected to have played in the past and likely still have save files for.

The main problem I can see right now is just trust and coordination. Also that we are aiming a bit high up, seeing if anons can coordinate auctions or whatever. For the love of god, start small. New players are just sort of tossed in the deep end by the game. Its sink or swim here, and the game just assumes its up to the player to look up how to play instead of having an actual guide

If you're complaining, you basically ruined your account by copying meta strategies. Had you crafted a crappy team on your own, you could've had fun in Poke and Great Ball. If you made a "decent" snowflake team, you'd be stuck in Ultra Ball. If you're in Master Ball. It's your own fault for playing the meta.

I made it to Masterball at 1623 elo. That's lower than last season, but my placement is higher than back then. Ended last season at 1861 elo.
Only played 1 to 2 games per evening because I stress out about this game, just hoping my moves hit is enough to give me an aneurysm. Tsareena has been my MVP. My bro from gen 6 was Zard Y and so the rest of the team reflects that, it's very meta.

Not this thread in particular, but people saying you absolutely need to follow the meta, be smogon "tryhards" and not use your favorites are just coping. I hit master ball last night while blackout drunk using mega houndoom, it's not even an accomplishment because it's so easy. Anons on /vp/ just need to stop being scared of battling online.

Yes people are wrong when they say you always need to follow the meta and play the sweatiest tryhard team. But have you SEEN what cook when they have zero context? While you dont need to play the meta, you definitely have to respect it and understand how your team beats it.
As the previous anon said, a lot of posts complain about being hard stuck ultra. While we can sit on our high horse and say game is easy, it doesnt change the fact that the pipeline from novice to intermediate in this game is just not that clear.

Yes, I absolutely agree with this. I guess I take the fact that I'm good at math for granted because I mainly just learned competitive Pokemon through numbers and memorizing stat lines. I didn't start playing competitive until Gen 8 and while I play casually, I've still managed to get rank 250 world wide as my highest rank. Understanding the meta will help you tremendously with things like team building and thinking outside the box, my main point was that a ton of anons are just terrified to even try and hide behind copium tier excuses like the ones I listed.

Upper Hand is more useful than cloak IF they have Fake Out for a lot of reasons really. Even just stopping the chip damage and scaring the opponent from using the move again later, but also of course your entire team gets the protection as long as the user of the move is on the field. And then the move slots are all open to have a different more useful item.

It's something they just need to fix.

Yeah, it's almost always the move to double up on the non-meta pick because you can at least predict what something like, say, a Garchomp will have. You can guess it might be scarfed or sitrus before you click your moves but seeing some mons that have very low usage doesn't give you much to go off on. If you can isolate the factors for the turn, which is easy to gather from predictable meta mons, you can probably hedge your risks and go for the off meta mon unless the meta mon in the lead threatens you so much that you'll just be too far behind from turn 1 to be able to catch up

Tournaments just tend not to get much traction on /vp/, at least not immediately. It's a thing you have to keep hyping up and asking people to join for a week or two at least. The monotype tournament usually gets about 20-40 people whenever it happens because /vp/ is just a less active board than others, even less actually play the game at anything resembling a competitive level.

I for one, is thinking of just doing this all myself.
Anyone can host the tournament, the only thing we need is a willing host and people willing to join. I think right now the only friction is just hesitance in someone taking charge and just going for it, probably because everyone here is quite timid or something.
My small issue is just I dont want to be 'that guy' who is dictating the whole general. Im already the one who controls the new player guide, the OP paste, and is the main trade person.
That an aside though, im fine with just wrangling whatever anons available for a small single elim tournament. Choose whatever team you want, Just to see if there is any interest. Also allows us to see how to use challonge properly, and how to deal with private rooms.Too bad it cant be next week's weekend though, since im away for a wedding.
Still, if noone steps up by weekend next week, ill try and do 'something', since monotype guy is just isnt around i suppose.

>a pokemon can only flinch once while on the field (resets if switched out)
>stale moves clause (BP decreases 20% each time the same move is used in a row, resets if move is swapped. Choice items were a mistake)
>PP is used at the default lowest amount, not the highest
>intimidate is once per game
>fakeout priority lowered to +1

Remove the spam
Make choosing when to use your moves more impactful
Intimidate is now a single use resource that needs to be used at a critical point, not a "hehehehe I just keep swapping in my intimidate user hehehehe"
