They were on an adventure and the only times they set foot inside of a school it was as a visitor of some kind, and the school children were noticeably younger. Some places were being sneaky about it by listing a character age as N/A if not scrubbing them entirely and just relying on people going "oh those Japanese" and not drilling deeper into the fact they're in a school uniform. Nowadays character ages and the fact they're in middle school or high school are a google search away.
