Yeah, but were talking about remasters here.
Even an assetflip shovelware has more value than directx 12 paint slap on top of archaic engine.

The new footage looks pretty good, so yeah.
But I wonder if they implemented flares into 1 since the areas are a lot darker now.
Also TR3 might be brutal without infinite flares.

The originals still work fine, so no.

>No I play the originals with an emulator.

Personally, I feel like some sort of remasters of the original Tomb Raider Trilogy (at the least) was long overdue. We would see remasters of games one console generation out. Like the Tomb Raider reboot, for example. But the originals have been left untouched for close to 30 years for some of them. These remasters are being built from the 'original' source codes and contain an HD pack for the models and textures, along with a few other added features. If they turn out well, than great.

Kind of random, but this is the first time that the original Tomb Raider games will appear on a Nintendo console officially. Tomb Raider 1 was on the Saturn, and did get a few other ports. But Tomb Raider 2 and 3 have always been PS1 exclusives on console (not including PSN) as well as PC releases. I think they were ported to at least iOS and Android.
>>
It looks alright desu. I'll probably get it just to have a nice widescreen PC version that works out of the box with gamepads and doesn't need any tinkering. OpenLara is good but it really only works properly with TR1. Not especially interested in the new graphics, but it looks fine.

Music is just far more personal, I'm not a huge fan of the Beatles but couldn't even make it half way through the song you just mentioned. Which is fine, I think that's how things ought to be, with enough creative differences to speak to many different kinds of people. The Beatles will probably always have a spot in best of lists for a long time despite their music not resonating as broadly as it used to.
>>

For those who never played TR1 before, this is the jacket of Pierre. It's one of things that was able to slip by the ESRB when they gave the game a T rating back then because almost everyone who encounters him never sees the back of his jacket. On top of the fact that its so heavily pixelated it's hard to tell especially on an old CRT. I can see why they added a bra.
https://youtu.be/tQUsc5oBugI
https://youtu.be/OccmHf1f5L4
Keep in mind they got rid of this jacket in Tomb Raider Chronicles in the cutscene he's in

>>
>>10691835
Yeah, that was the Anniversary game for Gen 6 and 7. But these are more so remasters since you can flip between old and new graphics.
>>
>>10687437
I was thinking about it, but then decided no. I already own the originals on both ps1 and pc... plus the remastered graphics are kinda ugly in places and the devs made some choices that boggles my mind (parallax mapping instead of just fully modeling that Great Wall ladder, really?)
>>
>>10687437
I've had a lot of doubts about this because it's Aspyr, but looking at the credits now reveals that they hired a lot of TR community artists and decomp guys to work on this, eg. the OpenLara guy was the technical lead, which is probably why it feels like the people involved with this actually gave a shit.
The disclaimer is offensive and retarded, but it looks like that's CD throwing Aspyr/Core under the bus. Hopefully it's easy to mod out.

I don't care about Remastered until it comes out fixed on GOG. For now, I want to know about the best way to play the games right now. People have been saying OpenLara has been superseded by things like TR1X, tomb3, etc., but this TR1X project I tried doesn't seem to have some of the quality of life features I would have expected from a decomp like framerate options or mouse look. >wasn't this archetype a dime a dozen in the 90's

I'm going to be honest with you here. That type of trope really wasn't a thing in the world of video games before Lara Croft made it a thing. Before 1996, it wasn't a trope at all. After Tomb Raider, you saw this rise in female protagonists in skimpy attire.
>>
>>10698974

This is one of the oldest magazine previews I can find for the original Tomb Raider (on the Sega Saturn), it has really early beta screenshots and images from the early pre-rendered promotional videos. This preview is from November 1995.

>"First of all, have a look at Lara Cruz... is she hot or what? It's high time a stylin' babe like LC starred in a video game, don't ya think?"

Lara was Lara Cruz in the earliest builds. But back in mid 1995, an editor from a game magazine made this comment, because you didn't see female protagonists like Lara in games, outside of the odd Japanese title and 2D fighting games. Early 90's was really flooded with Sonic inspired characters. I feel like Lara Croft set the trend for the later half of the 90's. I would even say that Lara was one of the most influential 90's game characters.

For tank controls with original textures, is it the best way to play those games? Or is there a better source port?

I liked their Quake and Turok remasters. They have done a good job on textures in Quake 2 and Turok 3. Tomb Raider has AI textures that they didn't even bothered tiling correctly. Maybe we would get extra outfits or things like that? They would've at least added something extra. Some outfit screen? Something about mansion? Tomb Raider is asking for it. Modern controls don't even work from what I understand. Which isn't that big of a deal for me, nevertheless.

Is OpenLara currently the best way to play the original 3 games on PC?
>>
>>10703185
I haven't tried it out yet other than through the website since I've had trouble getting it installed on Linux, but I would guess so.

OpenLara is a game engine, so it has a ton of graphics options, multiple players, and quality of life enhancements and I think games 1=4 work on it. TR1X is a decomp, so the game still runs at 30fps and is basically vanilla. It has some additional things like command line input, but it's much more limited than the other. As far as the remaster goes, it is actually pretty decent with the old graphics and it seems to add a midair flip to make changing directions more convenient.

That's it? You'll find some really primitive and embarrassing shit if you go look around here and there in Appalachia too. Or for that matter places like rural Russia, India, and China, or Brazilian favelas.

Shit, black tribals in parts of Africa can be argued to be more flattering in a sense if you consider that many of them are just living the same hunter-gatherer lifestyle that people used to a hundred thousand years back, rather than being drug addicts or alcoholics living on gov't gibs.
Sure, they're literal spearchuckers who are eons behind even developing poorfag countries, but frequently they're actually fucking self-sufficient. You wanna see blacks being REALLY fucking embarrassing then look at Zimbabwe instead, THAT's something to be ashamed of.

I can't fucking deal with this modern liberal mindset. Oh no, someone might get the idea that black tribals may still exist in a few parts of the world, that's so dangerous and hurtful!
>>
>>10704326
bro, theres no reasoning with these people

>>
>>10704326
You can say the exact same thing about how blacks are depicted in old cartoons like Song of the South. That's an accurate depiction of how southern blacks acted in the 19th century, but you can't acknowledge that there was ever a time when they instinctively stepped off the sidewalk when a white person was coming in the opposite direction.
>>
>>10704336
Nix that. A better example is Coal Black n da Sebben Dwarfs. A comedic depiction of black culture of the 1940s, rooted very much in reality. But the cartoon has been locked in a vault since the 1970s because showing blacks as enjoying jazz and fancy clothes and pretty girls is "racist".
>>
>>10704275
>Boomers said the same thing 30 years ago when those warnings started being put on old cartoons.
They actually started censorship of older cartoons with blackface and what not way back in the 1960's like with Tom and Jerry shorts. In fact they outright replaced the mammy character with a teenage white girl in many of them back then.
>>
>>10692019
I can't understand the disclaimer that well. Is it to just cover their asses in case someone complains and/or faces them with some kind of legal action?
Because if a rational modern person sees a "blatently bigoted" scene in the media they are consuming they instantly know that it's wrong. They don't need a few seconds of text on their screen at the start to remind them of that.
Meanwhile bigoted people who won't see an issue with the "blatently bigoted" scene and might actually even enjoy it or yearn to go back the old days aren't going to be dissuaded by those words on the screen.
I guess it could be argued for people that sit in the middle that might not know about the state of the scene bigottedness?

>No, they don't.

It actually has been confirmed by the developers at Saber Interactive that Aspyr games gave them access to the Mac source codes, and these are actually based on the original Aspyr Mac releases from the late 90's

https://www.eurogamer.net/tomb-raider-super-fan-reveals-they-were-behind-trilogy-remaster
> Along with Saber, XProger also thanked Aspyr for access to its Mac ports' source code. "You are great pros," XProger wrote. Last but by no means least, XProger thanked the games' original developers and community. "We eagerly read ALL your comments, interviews, reviews and reactions. The responsibility to all of you was higher than the fear of deadlines and the insane amount of work."

The Mac source codes were derived from the DOS/ Windows PC source codes. These versions have a few odd quirks to them because of that. But they are probably the closest that the devs could get to obtaining anything that resembled the original source codes.

Yes, a single black woman who owns a lovely two-storey home in the suburbs (with attic and basement), has a social life that includes a bridge club, is not subserviant to a white man, and owns lots of expensive goods like a huge refridgerator (in the 40s at that), a piano, record player, and a fuckload of jewelry, voiced by a black woman who of course had a black accent, and is never seem delving into stereotypes of the era.

Been having fun. Their attempt at "Modern controls" feels like they didn't do enough for it to work with the game, and overall manages to be clunkier as a result. Tank controls may be seen as a relic of the past by some people, but at least it has a logic to it that makes perfect sense once you're into the groove of it, so I've been sticking to that.

The modern controls were also very difficult too, so maybe I'll check out those open source fan projects (they look a lot better).

here's his OG model, he looks less like a generic Dreamworks prince, and has some cool looking side burns in the original model. And his pants weren't corduroys. I can appreciate the attempt at HD textures, and I don;t think it is all bad. But, some of it feels very 'first draft' and 'we had to meet a deadline' kinda remaster. I think, the 'base' of this port is really good. I mean, the implementation of the Mac source code, the extra features. The QOL updates. But the HD pack aspect is a little hit and miss.

It's amazing what the fanbase has done to keep the original Tomb Raider series alive. But I think it's good to see some form of an official remaster/ release of the series. But it really does feel like the IP holders do like to snub the original series. Because I feel like a much higher caliber remasters should have happened about 10 years ago. I am happy to see an all-in-one collection of TR1-3 though. Aspyr had to use the Mac source codes to do it. They apparently hired some of the fan modders to work on this.

Are you retarded? There was no "in-world" logic in Tomb Raider 1 for why certain areas were lit well and others weren't. In fact, it fixed a lot of lighting problems and the re-implemented skybox fixed the initial intentions of developers in places like The Lost Valley, which was never meant to be "underground".

I've always been a big fan of the tank controls, they're my favorite part of the games and I'm used to them since I was a kid, but certain people within the TR community are being turbo autistic and insisting tank controls are the only way to play. It actually makes very little difference and you can do everything you need to do with the modern controls. I'd rather new players experience the game with modern controls than being filtered and quitting. The new controls take nothing away from the OG experience of timing jumps and solving puzzles. You just have to approach your jumps a little differently

I'm surprised by how little they detract from the grid-based TR experience. It's just the same shit but you need to align your jumps a little differently

Yes, because it's not nice to have prejudices against CANNIBALS

The game didn't have any lighting system you fucking retard.
It was all basic vertex lighting.

adding a hole in every ceiling makes lara look stupid for going through all the cave levels when she could have just surveyed the area and dropped down anywhere
coliseum was still covered up/underground in anniversary and toby consulted on it so its probably closer to "initial intentions"

my opinion is remastered visuals are a good option for 1 but for 2 and 3 you're better off just playing with original visuals

I recommend trying the remaster on a 4:3 monitor. It seems like the game can adjust itself to any aspect ratio. Playing the game in classic mode on this older Dell VGA monitor just works really well.

>Backported mid-air flip to TR1

This is like adding the spindash to Sonic 1. I don't think they backported anything to TR1. I suspect that TR1 is now using the TRII or TRIII engine. I suspect that they all are using the same engine for this port. Like the 3D pick-ups that appear on screen when you pick up an item, for example. I feel like Aspyr or Saber dropped all of TR1's assets into the TRIII engine.

Toby didn't design Colosseum and maybe Lara didn't have access to helicopters in Peru. Besides, even in the original TR, Lost Valley was supposed to be "outside" anyways, so pointing out that there were holes in the roof is redundant.

They didn't. Tomb Raider 2 was the first to back the mid-air flip anyway.

Depends. There are some instances where they add neat little immersive flair to some of the environments. Temple Ruins is a nice example where they changed up some of the repeated textures in some areas to give it more variety, and also added things like making the waterfall overflowing on the second tier and spilling out of a cracked enclosure, and you can see the water puddle below.

Stuff like this isn't everywhere, but it's small stuff like that which changes the overall atmosphere, sometimes making it more visually interesting.

Yeah, I knew that. It just seems like TR1, TR2 and TR3 might all be using the same internal engine for this HD collection. Just a theory, because TR1, TR2 and TR3 all seem to have the same features across the boards. But, I don't actually know.

it sounds like I'm nitpicking but it's not just lost valley and coliseum, they added them everywhere to the point where it's jarring, they're only there because they wanted to add light sources, one or two here or there would have been fine but they just spam those in every other room

I haven't evens started TR3 in this collection. But that is interesting. It has been confirmed that these ports were made using the Mac source codes that Aspyr has in their possession from their old Mac ports. Aspyr published the Mac ports for TR1: Gold, TRII: Gold, TRIII + TLA, TRC and TR:TLR as well as AOD. They basically did the porting for all of the Core TR games. They do have access to the TR4 and TR5 Mac source codes as well. I have a feeling that Chronicles and The Last Revelation will be a two pack HD release, if this collection does well.

I honestly kinda agree with you. I like the new lighting effects. But it seems odd that so many environments are this open. The Lost valley was always meant to be a Valley, but limitations prevented a sky box from happening. But a lot of these later locations really seem less hidden.
