Wipeout 64 is really fun! It should be held in higher regard by both Nintendo 64 fans and Wipeout fans.
>>
>>10814519
This board will never admit it
>>
yeah
>>
>>10814546
i think cuz no one played it
still ironic a sony franchise appeared on the n64
>>
>>10816423
It was on the saturn too, as was destruction derby.

Ridge racer appeared on the n64 too

Psygnosis were supremely based and kept releasing their games for other consoles and PC for years despite being owned by Sony. It wasn't until around 1999 when they got restructured by SCEE and turned into a meek development studio.
Psygnosis did not want to participate in console wars. Be like Psygnosis.
>>
>>10814519
I know I've played Ridge Racer 64, but I need to revisit Wipeout 64. I remember not liking it that much because it's very much influenced by F-Zero with its wide and long sections allowing the illusion of showing 5000km/h.
>>
>>10816435
They were pretty under the thumb. The ports to saturn were particularly botched, poor graphics and strange design decisions were suspicious. Put it this way, the ps1 versions were clearly superior in quite a blatant way (destruction derby damage meter didn't have as many damage points for example. No real reason to dumb that down).
>>
>>10816443
All Psygnosis's Saturn ports seem to be outsourced to a company called Perfect Entertainment. It's no secret that PlayStation was Psygnosis's platform of choice (they did redesign a devkit for it after all) but they were open to serving other customers.
>>
>>10816454
They must have ported the PC version too as that had the same dumbed down port (compared to almighty ps1)
>>
>>10816454
The Saturn ports of Wipeout and Wipeout 2097 were done by Tantalus Interactive. Between these two they also did the Saturn port of Manx TT.
>>
>>10816605
Didn't they also do house of the dead? Which was fucking horrible
>>
>>10814519
I used to have this game mastered but have long since lost all the skill. The feeling of being able to run multiple perfect laps on phantom speed is kino. I don't care what anyone says this is the fastest wipeout.
>>
>>10816467
This isn't a port. This is N64s own game.
>>
>>10816876
Sorry I was on about the destruction derby port
>>
>>10816862
Yep that was them as well. Surprisingly they're still around with their last game being the port of Zelda Skyward Sword for the Switch.
>>
n64 already had extreme g and podracing. Why should I pick this up over the other 60 racers on N64? This shit is expensive, I would have rather have picked up something like hercules or hybrid heaven out of sheer curiosity over this
>>
>>10816872
>I don't care what anyone says this is the fastest wipeout.
There's something to be said about sense of speed versus actual speed. WipEout Fusion feels much slower than the older games, despite the speedometer reporting four times the speed (but actually being two times the speed in reality because the speedo lies).
>>
>>10814519
Anything where the soundtrack is a big deal isn't meant for the N64.
>>
>>10817039
This game was not expensive. They couldn't sell it. I got my copy for 4.99 or 9.99. This was the cheapest game on the shelf of N64 games. I might have oicked up mime a toysRus. It was too hard amd nobody liked this. I believe that's why it was so heavily discounted. But if you mastered this game then, Oh man, this thing was a different animal.

I was a huge fan of pod racer and extreme G 1&2 as well. In fact they're all in my collection. back in the day I'd rent the extreme Gs.
>>
>>10814519
I wore out an n64 controllers on this. I remember learning techniques of holding the controller gently so it wouldnt cause my hands to cramp up during long play sessions..

I gotta add a few more n64 racers.. I bought a fake box for stuntracer 64 becuse that ones sorta expensive. My copy of wipeout64 was damaged in a blaze but I saved it.

Did you know, most n64 games are 30 fps?
>>
>>10814519
Is Wipeout the noob version of F-Zero or is it the other way around? I only got into Wipeout last year.
>>
>>10817949
Ohhh f-zero X!. Ive been wanting that forever. I missed out on this.. it be really be next in my ebay que along the gamecube fzero..
>>
>>10817949
I happy to see that fzero X is not prohibitively expensive. The gamecube cube one is a little expenive.. 75ish for those.

I also really want 1080 snowboarding and hydrothunder 64.
>>
>>10817963
And waverace64.
>>
>>10817949
I'd say neither is the noob version of either. Both are pretty highly regarded games though, I never spend a lot of time playing fzero 64. Becusse this gsme is an n64 franchise itsfair assume it's top notch. They just don't put out bad games.

Wipeout 64 was considered the poor man's wipeout when compared to its wipeoutXL counterpart on the ps1..

It is nonetheless an excellent and challenging ging racer. The music gets a little repetitive. This was a common problem for a lot for game with smaller dev teams on n64. Somehow the music in n64 podracer managed to sound quite good and varied..

>Saturn ports of Wipeout
Granted the Saturn port was my first Wipeout experience but I prefer it over the Playstation version.

I'm a big fan of the OG wipeouts. I'm not really interested in anything after XL.

Same. 3 is beautiful looking but it's missing the sovl of the first two.
>>
>>10818302
It feels like Wip3out got away from 90s futurism and too much into Y2K optimism and occidental interpretation of Japanese pop culture. It feels like a completely different setting.

XL was the peak for me and I lost interest in everything after 3. The PSP games and Wipeout HD just didn't do much for me. BallisticNG is a pretty good substitute though.

>>10818375
Wipeout has always been about following the current trend in electronic music.
>>
I hate racing games
>>
>>10818743
Good news: you are most likely not autistic then.
>>
>>10818375
Totally agree, it lost its identity. The first two were the only good ones. That collection on ps4 was some truly soulless shit
>>
I own a copy, and have played it for maybe twenty minutes.
I just don't care for Wipeout. Don't like how floaty it feels. I would sooner just play F-Zero X, Extreme G, Episode 1 Racer... Lot of good competition in that genre on N64, is what I'm saying.
I guess there's AeroGauge as well, as if anyone cares about AeroGauge.
>>
>>10818778
How is that good news?
>>
>>10818863
Autism is a meme now. Everything makes you autistic. You like beans more than someone else, then you're autistic. If you wipe with more than two pieces of toilet paper, you're autistic
If you like mangos, you're an autistic psychopath. You like sonic, autist. Mario? Autistic cultist. Do you pay attention to details and remember things, autistic...
>>
>>10818875
I like sonic so that must mean im very autistic..

Gotta go fast!!

Holy shit at the wipeout 3 hate. I fucking adore that game. I recently played through and unlocked almost everything. That game is beautiful.
>>
>>10817039
>60
More like 3
>>
>>10818002
It do be like this.
>>
>>10817039
>Why should I pick this up over the other 60 racers on N64?
Mario Kart, Beetle Adventure Racing, Formula 1, the list goes on...
>>
>>10814519
Can this be emulated properly these days? I used to remember it running way too fast when I tried in the mid 2000s.
>>
>>10822330
Yes but dont play it on project64 because while the game itself works, the time trial and gold championship menus get stuck if you back out of them, meaning you have to do them in one go and never back out and save if you want to get medals in all of em.
>>
>>10822476
What emulator do you use for it?
>>
>>10816435
they were kings in tne 90s I really miss Psygnosis

Speaking of, anyone have that huge pack of Wipeout content for BallisticNG? It's kind of a copyright minefield so it doesn't show up on conventional sites but I know I've seen it linked on here before
