>Where to buy
Aliexpress, gogamegeek, litnxt, keepretro, mechdiy, Powkiddy/Retroid official websites

>Best Brands
Retroid (Well built, powerful, but $100-200 range), Anbernic (Balanced price, power and build quality, avoid the RG Nano), Powkiddy (Cheap, low quality builds, interesting shapes), Miyoo (One hit wonder), TrimUI: (Good build quality, shitty software, good price).

>What do I buy
Post your preferences: Money (20$ - 300$), Shape (horizontal, vertical, clamshell, square), Pocketable or not, OS (Linux, Android, Both), Systems (Pre PSX is 8, 16, and 32-bit eras, PSX with extras, Dreamcast and N64, PSP and DS, PS2 and GC/Wii capable)

>Before you buy
- Handhelds come with low quality SD cards. Back them up, throw them away, buy new ones.
- It takes some tinkering. You better have bare basic desktop knowledge on how to unzip files and put them in folders. We are not here to teach you how.
- Overall quality of these products is very cheap.
- Reviewers get free handhelds, caveat emptor.

Neither seems necessary imo unless you are playing on a CRT, I was watching accuracy tests yesterday out of genuine curiosity but most games seem 1:1 at least for Genesis Plus GX. And GBC is probably even easier to emulate so...

I don't know if this counts, but does anyone know of a good GB/GBC/GBA emulator for Vita? I'm using mGBA 0.10.2 and it's OK, but I swear there's some input lag and sound issues on my PSTV.

Latest stable retroarch gpsp. Even shit like kingdom hearts should work now.

Will we ever see ps3 and Xbox emulation on Android? I feel like the Odin 2 can handle it. I really don't want to jump to a deck or rog ally just for that because they are so much bigger and heavier with worse battery.

Barely, and it's gong to cost way more than the RP4 pro given the oled and SD chip
>>
Honestly, coming from the GBA I expected more from the DS. Hardware improved and all that, but the only good games are snes ports or the psp version is superior. I suppose pokemon fans would rejoice. What am I missing? And the Fire Emblem games are ugly as hell, what were they thinking?
>>
>>11216348
It really is going to come down to whether they shoot themselves in the foot with the pricing. Even despite OLED or linux compatability, people aren't going to want to spend much more on a successor with the same amount of power.
>>
>>11216348
>more powerful cpu
>Barely, and it's gong to cost way more than the RP4 pro given the oled and SD chip
Nah, something happened that the OLEDs they have access to gotten cheaper. RP5 will be barely above $200 if at all, you can screencap this.

That screen is already in the rg556, and that thing has been sold for as low as $140 shipped during a recent ali sale. There's really no reason this can't be $200 flat before shipping like the RP4P is right now, with the RP4P receiving a slight price cut until stock is extinguished.
>>
>>11216439
>. RP5 will be barely above $200 if at all, you can screencap this.
I'm betting 250 at least
Not because of the hardware cost, but because of the marketing hype retroid is making, so they'll charge more to add to the "premium" fee

Handheld modding?
>anyone doing anything fun with their handhelds?

>>
>>11216541
I haven't noticed most problems there and I haven't bothered with PSP yet. Is widescreen PS viable now?
The only issue I've experienced is volume resetting to default after using fast forward and also screenscrapper being picky about filenames but that's not a problem of the handheld.
Not a fair comparison still because I'm using the revision model and crossmix instead of stock, but really this feels incredible for $45 and GBA games look fantastic.

Ye, I like how these little Famiclones are actually pretty solid and even though they aee not made out if classic Nintendonium, they replicate various GBC/GBA/DS colours almost 1:1 flawlessly. This is identical to the yellow GBC/Pocket Pikachu.

The GBA L/R buttons are on the front. It's what the long buttons with the same color as the d-pad are.
You basically, when you want to play GBA games, just slide the bottom half of the back phone case off and reverse it, then the app will automatically open into its main menu/artificial sleep mode continue from whatever state you last were playing. Uses some stupid USB-C port technology that understands which specific position the USB-C male port is inserted. Makes the app sleep when you have the buttons on the back as part of the phone's protective case, opens the app and continues from where you left off when you 180 reverse the bottom half to cover the screen, using touch-screen inputs with a physical plastic/rubber d-pad and button overlay.

So you could still use the app without the modular controller case, just having to use touch screen inputs with your thumbs.

Still $19.99 USD as an early bird special, but first prints will only work with specific smart phone models. It needs to be able to have a form factor snug fit on the phone for inputs to work properly.

So basically you're saying an extra $20 for better screen but larger device from the RP4P.

Honestly I don't think this pricing is aggressive enough. Once the rp4p gets discounted everyone will just go for that anyways because this price is getting dangerously close to odin 2 territory.

Anbernic is on par with Powkiddy in terms of being cheap shit, Retroid has long since surpassed them as being the best midrange/bang for your buck brand. And even then Powkiddy is better in some areas like the RGB30/20SX where they put out budget devices with 1:1 screens that make perfect sense for Game Boy/NeoGeo Pocket games and 8:7 content.
Most of their good ideas now are literally stolen from other companies like the A1 Unicorn, the TrimUI Smart Pro, or Ayaneo’s Pocket DMG; and they can only copy them as shittily as possible like a true Chinese company would.

I've come to realize that even 3.5inch isn't enough for me to enjoy ps1/n64 and up
this means that for me, the r36s is all I need until something cheap, powerful and large enough comes by
>>
>>11217767
Look at it from an average guy's perspective
RP4P was a huge jump over 3+. Literally 2x performance + cooling + 8 gigs of ram, hall effect analog + analog triggers. Way better hardware, no bullshit.
RP5 has a CPU that has literally same raw performance, somehow LESS RAM and costs $20 more. And 1920x1080 is questionable on a retro device (though to each his own).
I do get that only a retard would expect 8 gen 2 and I still think it's still good value for the hardware. But they really, REALLY will have to deliver with those drivers, or else. Otherwise that would make RP5 near pointless. Even if the drivers will give you somewhat better PS2/3DS performance overall and a bigger bump in select games, hypothetical RP4P price drop to $150 would negate all of that.
This is more like RP4 Snapdragon OLED edition, not a new gen.

>This is more like RP4 Snapdragon OLED edition, not a new gen.
It was unsustainable honestly, with only one year of difference and almost zero competition.
>>
>>11218241
To be honest, I absolutely understand why they did that. Phone market is already like this. A typical Xiaomi budget phone line has 720G one year, then 695 for 2-3 years, then maybe D900… Literally zero progress, same shit year to year.
They were also likely hard pressed with CPU choice. 865 is the level of Galaxy S20. Why not S21 or S22? This was a couple of bad years for Qualcomm, 888 and 8 gen 1 had too much heating. So… The only option would be 8 gen 2, not realistic for $200 and there's Odin anyway.
On the other hand, people kept asking them exactly the same shit. "OLED when", "if only it had Snapdragon", every single time. So… they did exactly that.
Now everyone is pissed they didn't make the same jump as RP3+ > RP4P.

They just fucked up by announcing the Mini and it so close to each other. Both are virtually identical in specs outside of battery and size that the RP5 just seems underwhelming in comparison, even though within the context of OLED handhelds its really not bad. Its basically on par or probably better than Ayaneo's Pocket Air and it shits all over Anbernic's RG556 by merit of having better specs and actually having good built-in software with no snapping sticks.
>>
>>11218424
I'd argue the device doesn't make sense still. Retroid built their customer base by being the best midrange providers out there. They gsve unbeatable value for money, focusing on form more than function. Extras like hall effects were cherries on top pf the raw performance you got compared to anbernig and their ilk and for like 1/2 the price of the equivalent premium options yet 80% of the way there in terms of power.

While objectively better the RP4P, the RP5 is a slap to the face of its user base. It has the same performance and a better screen but is more expensive, focusing on form over function. And for $220 you're only $80 away from an Odin 2, which gets you the entire emulation library up to switch, a better form factor, and a bigger screen that would work better for oled anyways.

Retroid is no Ayaneo or AYN.
>>
>>11218608
Is Switch emulation out of the question for this thing now?
>>
>>11218627
The 556 is like $160 while the RP5 is $220. I'm surprised they didn't just price it at $190 to kill off Anbernig for good.
>>

>>
>>11218660

>>
>>11218657
It's priced similar to the ayaneo micro, which to me isn't worth.
>>
>>11218627
Maybe. Though I agree it gets fucked by comparisons in general, people just expected the same jump as RP4 every year.
I think what really fucked them is caring what people wanted. There's a reason to use Dimensity and LCD—it's simply cheaper. Everyone wants OLED and Snapdragon until they see the pricetag. You want the premium quality, you get the premium price. Raw specs work way better for advertisement than some better drivers and linux which no one understands, that may or may not give you performance.
>>
>>11218669
There isn't a "cult", there's just a lot of people here who think that if you aren't shitting on Anbernic 24/7 then you're a shill. Of course, Anbernic has done a lot of this to themselves by releasing a new handheld every week and doing some stupid shit (e.g. 405M screens falling out, 35XXSP battery issues, Cube light bleed, analog stick cardinal snapping, etc.). You'd probably see a lot of the same with other Chinese manufacturers if they were shotgun blasting out handhelds at the same rate.
>>
I'm gonna be honest, I don't even understand why buy Anbernic. Seems like a Chinese company with QC issues that thinks "more models = better", with model numbers like RG69420XXXVVVXVXV, all on exact same chips. Every week someone posts screenshots from some shitty Chinese government discord with rough drafts of the new RG199XXLMAOV which is totally gonna be the next big thing. Why and how this company exists is beyond me
>>
>>11218746
Why not? There’s a lot of options for form factor. Now I don’t have to be stuck with some 16:9 slop to emulate SNES games. I can go vertical if I want hand cramping, horizontal if not, or even get a Genesis controller.

Frankly, android emulation is awful. Anbernic is the only one not shitting out snapdragons while maintaining decent power.
>>
>>11218746
Newfags don't know, but anbernic was the first to make an actual good handheld. Even to this day it still makes decent low to midrange options. It's just that retroid burst into the scene 2 years ago with the rp2 and then rp3 that were a lot better value for money that now anbernig is getting shit on. But honestly all chinkhelds have qc issues. You already forgot about the retroid flip hinge, or the rp3/4 broken shoulder buttons?

With retroid now focusing into the more premium price point I think anbernic will keep their loyal fans.
>>
>>11218819
The first actual good (Decent) chinkhelds were from jxd and gpd. Anbernic was the first to make a good linux chinkheld along with miyoo and gkd, which were sorta clones of the gcw zero.

Buttons are amazing, soft, and gameboy-like. they're superbly quiet, the analog stick is great for 3d games where using a dpad would cramp you.

I can confidently get at full speed

The sleep function is amazing too, I left it on overnight and no battery drained

And I got it for 25$ with the carrying case.
It is peak design and peak comfort.
Not peak power, but PSP wouldn't look good in 4:3 anyway.
The ONLY complaint I can possibly make is that the screen is the raw LCD, and there's no plastic/glass protecting it

Both telescope controllers have similarly sized face buttons (small but appropriately spaced apart, except the "BSP-D3" Switch looking one also uses these illuminating little buttons for the d-pad as well just to keep Switch aesthetics, but it has proper analog sticks while the Ipega's analog sticks feel like something on a cheap Powkiddy, the Ipega's L3/R3 being stiff and hard to use while the BSP-D3's L3/R3 buttons click so quick and easily. All of the buttons and sticks on the BSP-D3 are better than the ones on the Ipega, except for the fact that the Ipega has a proper d-pad and its d-pad is pretty decent. The Ipega also allows considerably more range for phones and how it holds them, allowing both horizontal and vertical mode while the BSP-D3 can only do horizontal/landscape.

The Mega Dream Controller is the exactly what you would think it would be. Pretty solid though despite being a cheaper quality plastic than an official PlayStation or Xbox controller, and despite feeling much lighter than a PS4/PS5 or Xbone/XsX/sS controller the top-heaviness of a phone clipped to it isn't any worse than when I used my DS4 with a phone clip. I'll just be using and recommending a DS4 over it though just due to the touch pad allowing you to have mouse controls in mobile games.

This made me appreciate how not great the Ipega's buttons and analog sticks really are, but its versatility and d-pad still make me prefer it over anything else, with a Dual Shock 4 PS4 controller being my second choice.

I might compile comparison photos tomorrow with a normal smart phone and a folding smart phone. But the Mega Dream controller has the best buttons/sticks/inputs out of the three but is the weakest due to how unportable the whole setup is with controllers and clips.
The BSP-D3 has better bittons and sticks than the Ipega, but has buttons instead of an actual d-pad, useless unless playing two player arcade games across from a friend with your phone. So even though the Ipega has weaker buttons and sticks, its ergonomics and versatility make it still my #1. But I am bias towards extendable controllers that turn your phone into a wide horizontal handheld over clipping phones to a regular console controller.

Miyoo laughably believes that the Mini and Mini Plus being decent and popular was enough to make them the Chinese Nintendo. By the time they release the Miyoo Flip/SP with analog sliders, they'll be bankrupt. There was no means for them to sell that piece of shit horizontal schlop at a profit and they basically rushed it out to keep competing with Anbernig as they struggled and flailed to figure out the Miyoo Flip's hinge. The novelty of an SP clone has come and gone, people are satisfied with the RG35XX SP and maybe ON THOUSAND PEOPLE in total worldwide would bat an eye when the Miyoo Flip eventually releases.
It sucks cause I fucking loved the Bittboys and all, and the Miyoo Mini was genuinely really fucking awesome (at least the V1 models). But between the Miyoo Mini Plus and the RG35XX, the 35XX was always the better option and anyone claiming otherwise was coming off of Miyoo Mini TikTok/Reddit fanboyism/hypetrain, especially now with like six versions of the RG35XX in almost any shape and form factor you could want it in.

People expected 8gigs of RAM, they expected a perfect, in between device and were THIS close to it.
I, along with many saw the around $200 price as a limit for a daily driver. Also, the gap in power between the Odin 2 and the rest isn't insignificant. All I really wanted was a stronger, mid range clamshell, They haven't made one since the 3+ ffs. Consensus suggests they are the higher quality company out of these. They are the standard and they're slipping because they keep kiking and cutting corners at the last second.

>>11220318
It is an inbetween device though? It's right inbetween the lighterweight Anbernigs and such that only run up to some PS2/GC max and the heavyweight king Odin 2 that runs everything. Anon is completely right, people thought they were getting a $200-250 Odin 2. Won't deny that there are some cut corners though like a half-assed promise of Linux and Android 10. But looking at the broader spectrum of the market, it perfectly fits where it is when you compare it to stuff like the Pocket Air.
>>
>>11220318
The Mini seems like finally the ideal one for me even though it doesn't come in the transparent turquoise like the RP3 and RP4 did, but I only care about playing up to DreamCast and N64, not PS2 and GameCube/Wii. I almost bought the RP4, was waiting until I had an extra $200 to spend on it, but it still had some flaws which the Mini fixes completely. The Mini's gonna be my end game, I really do not enjoy playing any intense seventh generation games in a handheld format and stuff on PS2 and Xbox would be easy shit to run like Disgaea where any slowdown due to special effects wouldn't matter due to them already occurring in a slow, over-the-top tactics title.

I have two and the d-pads are identical the the SNES controller's. Both launched with firmware where certain SNES titles and many GBA titles had to be loaded, exited, then re-opened to properly load into the RAM and play well, but the update fixed having to do that. I completed Sonic Advance 1 100%, but Advance 2 is a bitch needing to get all red rings and all seven emeralds with all four main characters. Tails and Cream just fly back and reach any red ring but Sonic has to be almost perfect speeds and jumps to reach some of them.

It runs more games than you may expect. Basically any 2D game will run at near or full speed. 3D games are hit or miss. Daemon X Machina worked great, but I had weird visual bugs that made Crymachina unplayable. Different turnip drivers also affect how well games play for obvious reasons. Check the game compatibility list on the odinhandheld reddit for more specifics.

I noticed that when you go on a "streak", you'll want to keep playing more of the same. I was waiting for my RP4 and since I had nothing else to play I got back to Heroes 3, although I thought I was tired of the game and getting back to it felt awkward. When my RP4 finally arrived, I realized I wanted to keep playing Heroes more than anything.
Same thing why it's easier to keep playing games from same console or same series. You kind of get into a certain mood and won't like switching gears. Even if the experience isn't all that great, you'll stick to the familiar stuff because you're in the mood and it just feels more comfortable. Just force yourself to play something different for a bit, wait for the "gears" to switch.

They both have 5000mAh batteries, probably the exact same one. Their chips also bench at the same battery efficiency. There might be a slight real world difference because of driver fuckery, idk, but the main difference will likely come down to the screen. I often read OLED is more energy efficient, but the screen itself is also about 37% larger in terms of area and has double the pixel count.

I've seen as high as 15.5 hours on PS1 for the RP4P (phawx vid) and as low as 2.5 hours when the fan is blasting while maxxing out on PS2. We'll how battery life turns out on the RP5, but I'm not expecting a huge difference either way. I would guess a smidge worse than RP4P if you put a gun to my head.

Well, "technically", since the Mini is theoretically (at least) supposed to replace the 2S, it still is a direct upgrade. Qualcomm SD865 > Unisoc T610; 3.7'' AMOLED > 3.5'' LCD; 6 GB RAM > 4 GB RAM.
The real issue is that, unlike 2S, the RPMini no longer offers an exceptional value proposal; it's just *adequately* priced for its capabilities.

Not while the 5 mogs it at comparable prices it isn't. Honestly, unless Linux plays out far better than expected with Retroid sharing software they shouldn't, this thing is a hard skip.
>>
>>11222761
RP5 is likely to be $239 after the price hike, for non "uhrly burd"-ers.

That is self-evident. If you want to buy one of them *now*, going for the 5 is the optimal move, given the pre-order price remains unchanged. I'm talking about after this particular timeframe elapses.

Format it to NTFS or exFAT first, then let the PSP reformat it in the way it wants. Make sure you do it from the CFW since formatting large memcards in OFW will just corrupt them. It's one of the Frogger games for GBA. Probably one of the "ports" from the gamecube games.
>>
>>11224189
The handheld industry has largely moved past anything like that. Emulation is so good these days (particularly for GameCube) and it’s relatively easy to emulate for mid range handhelds and up for a low price already. There’s effectively no reason to use original hardware in a portable console for innumerable reasons , including things like astronomical manufacturing cost and terrible battery life. It’s a pure novelty so no company will ever seriously pursue it. Making your own is your best bet, but you should just get a Steam Deck or something if you want excellent portable GameCube emulation.
>>

The best option right now since it enhances some emulator performance and has nice features but I personally had some problems with it so I moved back to Stock with enhancements.
>>
>>11224970
Crossmix. Tomato was pretty bad and Knulli was locked behind a paywall. When I had a problem with Crossmix I talked to the dev and he fixed it within a day and personally got back to me with the solution.
>>
>>11223927
Thanks doc.
Although he orange now.
>>
>>11225008
Oh yeah another annoying thing about Knulli is that you can only add files through FTP because of the way it partitions your SD card. Weird decision.
>>
>>11225027
From what I heard on the h700 end, Knulli needs the partition to be ext4 for the ports to work correctly. Also heard trying to mount ext4 under Windows programs tends to corrupt things, so beware of that.

>>11225032
I only tried Knulli a few times before going back to Crossmix. The TSP's Sleep Mode is too much of a killer feature for me to not have and I also prefer just moving files the old fashioned way.

The 5 is probably the best power to price, however not sure I would trust a 14 yo girl with the Linux tinkering required to get the most from it. There's also the consideration of pocket size. The RP4 has a smaller size (good, more pocket-able) owing to it's smaller screen (unfortunately). She may consider that an advantage. If Retroid were smart, they'd reevaluate their decision to forgo the clamshell form factor as this would solve any pocket-ability issue with the RP5. So in short, me? I'd wait for a clamshell. You? probably should consider the options. Retroid are decent, but others exist.

Smart man, this is why I haven’t bought any more handhelds since I got my deck at launch. Once you have something that fits your needs, it’s hard to stay on the high-speed hamster wheel of the current handheld market.

Is she into tech? If not, you should probably just get her a Switch, man. My little sister stopped at anything more complex than the GBA but if yours is tech-inclined, the RP5 is going to be the best at that price range.

No reason to get a rp4 since the rp5 exists now.

But really you should just get her a switch lite or something. Normal people don't want to play games from 20 years ago.

I'd wait to see if there are any defects with the 5 before buying it as a gift.
>>
>>11225276
Why are you gifting a tinkerer's device to a 14 year old?
>>
>>11225321
That and within the next year you've got switch 2 and a bunch of other handheld pcs releasing. I wouldn't be surprised if a deck 2 is announced within the next few months. There's enough hardware coming out that there's no need to double dip.

already have a RP4P, what reason would there be to get a 5?
kinda want a more gimmicky handheld instead that can do the DS decently
>>
>>11225414
Brother, this has been the case for years and it doesn’t stop people from buying tons of crap handhelds that they’ll barely ever touch. There’s ALWAYS something new in the horizon. I’m not even going to look at a Deck 2, because the first one is already more than good enough for me. Again, you gotta get off the hamster wheel once your needs are met.
>>
>>11225570
There's also the fact that the original Deck has tons of great upscaling solutions when you connect it via USB video output. If you're fine with indie games or old PC games, you're good.

AFAIK Fire Red/Leaf Green and Emerald are the only games you can actually link up via Wi-Fi. They were compatible with a wireless GBA add-on or something that can be emulated in Retro Arch. Unfortunately, link cables can't be emulated in the same way, so Gen1, 2 and R/S are all off the table. I have no idea about the DS.

I think melon standalone and desume have wifi compatibility. Drastic is supposed to get, but that's not being added until it goes open source.

I don't want another controller or handheld, but how's that dpad? Youtube Shills don't like dpads as much as they used to, so they just test the sticks/triggers and that's it
>>
>>11226115
The dpad uses microswitches, and they're very clicky. The face buttons are membrane buttons. I prefer tactile microswitches because they are more durable than rubber membranes, but the face buttons feel okay. I chose this controller because it has a headphone jack. What I don't like about this controller is that my phone doesn't set the controller's headphone jack as default, and I have to use an app to force it to use the headphone jack of the controller.

Download Hyper Lode Runner, is good game
Also Metal Gear Solid and Picross games are kino too, and the one roguelike GB game
>>
If they raise the price to 240 for the 2gb of ram, I feel like it will no longer be in the 'best value' category. Hitting close to $200 is very important.
>>
>>11226230
They just revealed the new retail price. It's $225.
>>

>spending $200 on chinkhelds
>>
>>11226230
Don't forget with s&h they add like $30 on.

Considering the fpgbc is dogshit and less accurate than an emulator, I'd say no it's not worth it
