Guardian Heroes thread? Guardians heroes thread.

Having a blast playing thorugh the story mode and the multiplayer melee is absolute pure chaos which I love. Every character is unique with a different play style which makes it a lot of fun to play through multiple times. Memorizing the magic spells moves instead of scrolling through the list to cast them really helps.

Reached one of the final bosses last night while playing as Nicole. It was a flying snake monster in the sky spirit world. How the hell are you supposed to beat this thing legit? I was able to defeat it on my last life by cheesing it. Figured out how to on accident and it died rather quickly. For those that want to know.... use Nicole's barrier spell on the boss next to a side wall where it can't escape. Just use it over and over again. It's cheap but works fantastic.

It's better than most brawlers but it still gets repetitive after 10 minutes. Most enemies you're fighting are just too dumb and the combat just too shallow
>>
Do you think I should pick up an english version of the game? Or can I go for the cheaper Jap one like usual? Someone said text was important in this.

>combat just too shallow
Yeah just physically pounding your way through would get old fast but I found using magic users in conjunction with the golden golem to be the most enjoyable. Also helps with a 2nd person. My kid has played a few times with me and having that extra player really adds to it.

>Do you think I should pick up an english version of the game?
Not sure. It does have a lot of text that tells the story plus text options that let you take different paths. I would watch a playthrough of the jp version before making that decision. No doubt the jap copy is many times cheaper.
>>
>>11215896
That is not cheap, that is literally how she is intended to be used.
>>
>>11215890
A shame there's no modern port since the Xbox 360 version exists.

I got this for XBLA and must have beaten it 3 dozen times getting all the achievements. Anyone else have the XBLA version? I didn't know until later but they changed the script. I am not sure how accurate they kept it but it seems mostly accurate to the original. They added a lot more cringe cheesy humor in the script though. Genchiro is a lot more of a stereotypical Japanese warrior type.

Han is by far the best character to use imo. He is powerful as fuck, can be fast if you want him to be and only has the fireball spell which is a good spell. Magic can feel quite jank to use in this game. Its one good thing about the XBLA version you can play remix mode which has button inputs for magic so you don't have to que it up and manually scroll through the spell list. My second favorite would be Serena. Then Genchiro. I do not like Randy and Nicole all that much. I know Nicole has a cheap tactic you can use but she isn't as great outside of that. She was definitely meant to be a co-op focused character.

I got to say though after playing this game again after so long since the Saturn version I think I am leaning towards it being my favorite beat 'em up game for sure. Its not the most perfect game and it could have a lot of tweaks to make it better but the game is just so damn good besides its minor issues I can't help to like it a lot. So even though technically there are "better" beat 'em ups I still would probably say this game is my favorite of them all.

On the surface, Guardian Heroes is an outrageously poorly designed game, but the poor design actually comes across as stylistic at certain points. For example, it wouldn't have hurt if they pulled the camera up a bit, which begs the question: "why didn't they just do it?" You can interpret that as an intentional choice, since not being able to see two thirds of what's happening makes the gameplay a lot more chaotic. Treasure are the types of devs that might genuinely do something like that, but personally, I don't want to fall down the rabbit hole where every piece-of-shit design choice was """"intentional"""" and the game is just perfect by default.

>so you don't have to que it up and manually scroll through the spell list
At the options menu you can look up any of the unlocked characters moves list and in that it tells you what combinations it takes to cast each magic spell. So instead of scrolling through the magic list getting hit in the meantime you can just for example quick tap down-down-Z to cast barrier. It makes it SOOOO much better to play this way.
>do not like Randy and Nicole all that much.
I like Randy because of his multi-plane damaging magic. I can jump out of harm to a different plane then fuck up everyone up. Nicole is the joke character but her healing, barrier, and 'get away creep' magic is nice. Really though these two characters are better as support when playing with a friend.

Yeah but remix mode just made the combat feel even better imo. Button combinations felt even more snappy in remix mode. I also like how you get three buttons for attacking and the air dash is very nice of an addition to help with dodging. Some things about remix mode though aren't as good so I ended up liking both remix and classic gameplay/graphics modes really.

I got this same impression. It will forever bum me out that we never got a proper sequel to this game that wasn't that disappointing GBA game. With some cleaning up of certain combat issues I have with it and balance tweaks a sequel to this game could have been the best most addictive beat 'em up ever. Or fighting RPG as Treasure seemed to think of it as. One thing that could have really been improved upon in a remake is how the healing could have worked. Rather than have it be between levels they could have made the sequel do it between fights similar to what Ninja Gaiden 2 does.

I tried this game for the first time over CEO weekend.

It's interesting but I'm not sure how engaging I'll find it long-term.

It is an extremely short game anon seriously

Fantastic game. I had the Saturn six player tap, good times man, good times.
Serena is the best character as she is capable of infinite juggle attacks, which can be used to rack up gigantic amounts of XP.

I know Treasure were action guys first and foremost but a proper RPG made by them is a big "what if" game for me. They dabbled with RPG elements in Guardian Heroes, Radiant Silvergun, and to a lesser extent Light Crusader and Omega Factor, but the results were surprisingly solid. They clearly appreciated the genre's potential for customization and making different character builds.

Seems to me this property would be ripe for an anime adaptation. It basically already is and has everything already laid out. Story, characters, locations, etc etc.

It's by far best in a group which is truenfir all brawlers but especially GH. By the end chunk of the game you'll be beefed up enough it's just total chaos, fireballs and lightning bolts, energy beams flying every which way, it's a blast. The only downside is that long unskippable cut scene in the middle. There's a non retro spiritual successor which isn't as good but is still pretty fun.

>lightning bolts, energy beams flying every which way, it's a blast
This is why GH is such a good beat em up. As far as just the fighting mechanics it's OK but throw in the spells and rpg system then it becomes something so much more.

I always feel like i'm playing this game wrong, the combat feels floaty. The purpose of the golden AI character seems to be to follow you around to kill steal. I love streets of rage 2, in that it feels like you "lock on" to an enemy once you start punching and the damage you deal feels more substantial.

Discount Capcom's D&D

>purpose of the golden AI character seems to be to follow you around to kill steal
You can set him to follow behind which I do while playing stronger characters but while using magically inclined ones I have him set more aggressive so I can attack from behind him.
>>
>>11218518
You can? thanks for telling me I'll have to give the game another go.
>>
>>11218295
It has a very tech demoy feel, much scaling muh shitton of sprites for no reason, and then some juggles to make it look pseudo deep
>>
>>11218546
>You can?
Yeah just press "X" and a bubble appears over you head with different commands for you to choose. iirc it's stand in front, stand behind, defend, and go ape shit.

The Retro Gamer magazine said it's the most well-made beat'em up game they had ever played; this has made me second guess my feelings on it, as I don't play many beat'em ups. Also, I worry about my skill level as Treasure games can lack fun if you are new to them. So I'm unsure If I'm missing something or if my intuition of playing it like you say is correct. I imagine the Ninja character that spins back and forth or the mage is fun if you spend the time to learn them.

You can't play Guardian Heroes without going on the arena, to grind level points. I remember that, in the last gameplays I have made, I passed more time inside the hidden arena, than in the various levels. I went against the boss that I was around 200 level, so it was pretty easy to defeat.
>>
>>11216081
To not mention that anyone at this point has taken inspiration to create a game with a mechanic similar to Guardian Heroes. It should sell well.
>>
>>11218546
You can even configure him to stay put or to go berserk and then he start cast fire with his sword or causing a huge explosion and kill everyone in the area.
>>
>>11218860
>The Retro Gamer magazine said it's the most well-made beat'em up game
lol, if anyting it's more as action rpg than a beat em up, it's all about leveling and magic rather than polished combat. Try the d&d arcades for a proper beat 'em up with light rpg elements.

I have my Famicom out at the minute, when i'm done with that I'll definitely be returning to the Saturn to give all of this a go.

>>11219691
I've only played D&D four times but I love it, I just wish my Japanese was better. People who I've played it with respond to it a lot more favourably too.
