Anyone uses their modern consoles mostly for retro games?
I have a Nintendo Switch and I mostly play retro games (like the NSO emulators, the remasters of old FPS or those collections of nes/snes/genesis games).
>>
No I don't pay for old emulated games running on modern hardware but much of my Switch is full of "new retro", TMNT Shredders Revenge, Megaman 11, Sonic Mania, Pocky and Rocky Reshrined, Ninja Saviors, Cuphead, SoR4, Blazing Chrome, Iconoclasts, Cotton Reboot / Rock n Roll, Touhou Luna Nights, Kaze and the Wild Masks, Phoenotopia, Crosscode and R-Type Dimensions.

Will probably get the new Power Rangers games and the other new Natsume titles in the future. I am loving this 2D revival, more arcade like games please.

I have a Switch Lite and I like playing N64 on it a lot, got the id shooters like Doom and Quake and they play very well (shame the doom ports lack the huge mod supports of the other versions), was thinking of getting Duke3D at some point too.
I wanted to get the Marvel collection but its way too expensive imo.

Do I need more on mein Switch:
>Quake I & II
>Doom I & II
>Radiant Silvergun
>Super Mario 3D World
>FF Pixel Remasters
>FF VII & VIII

Sonic Origins
Mega Man Legacy Collection
Mega Man X Legacy Collection
Castlevania compilations
>>
I wish they made one of these that was just a console. I like the cheap price of the lite but i dont care about the handheld stuff at all. and the higher model is too much money and its portable with a useless screen for me it looks like something id break on accident
>>
>>11271775
I use my Wii U to play NES, SNES, N64, GBA, GameCube, Wii, and Wii U games(which are most of the games on Switch). It's pretty great.
>>
>>11271775
Is this just like buying a chinkheld but you can't pirate the games and have to pay for them?
>>
>>11271942
You can actually but it takes more effort
>>
I want that new Worms Armageddon re-release, it looks neat.
>>
Over the course of the PSP's lifespan I bought exactly 35 PSone Classics and exactly one actual PSP game (Ratchet and Clank Size Matters)

The thing was always a portable PS1 to me.
>>
>>11271864
they’ve ported damn near every CV game to switch except for SOTN, why? are they stupid?
>>
>>11271775
PS3,i guess.
>>
>>11271775
Since about 2021 my most played Switch games are the Arcade Archives games.
>>11272195
same, for Daytona,Super Hang-on and RR4
>>
My PSP existed mainly to emulate old games and play Doom. My Steam Deck is mostly the same.
>>
I've had an acer nitro 5 since it was new. Not high end by any means, but way over kill for the UO/emulation machine it's been

I'm the same, I play some modern games but spend a lot of time replaying old favorites or digging into games I didn't get to when they were new. I buy a lot of these remasters and ports, even just to show support that I like they're being made available legally and to encourage more.

And some of these provide fantastic versions of these games. The M2 3D remasters are the best versions out there for some of these games.
>>
>>11271775
imagine playing Quake on a controller layout? whats even the point playing anything past episode 1 if you are not a COD console pro from the old days with godlike input
>>
>>11271857
>Quake
>Switch

It really isn't that bad. I played the living shit out of Quake 64 and beat it several times on nightmare. I got so good that I eventually started playing only to try and beat it without dying. I never managed to do it but I got a solid halfway through the game. I used dpad for movement and stick to aim so it was analogous to dual analog but I'd imagine with real, modern dual analog controls it would be even more serviceable.
>>
>>11275125
isnt Quake 64 a watered down version of Quake so its doable for console player?
sorry but i simply cant imagine the full Quake be casualy played above anything but easy on console. all the reviews say its great but i cant imagine most normies would keep playing after they encounter more than 2 Fiends.
I still hope you find the fun in it anon and enjoy a nice classic
>>
>>11275138
surprisingly no. it's almost identical to the DOS original outside of new lighting effects and textures. there are a couple levels where geometry is slightly different in places but otherwise it's quake in all of its glory. I've played the PC and Saturn versions pretty extensively too and the only one that messed with enemies count, ammo etc, is the Saturn version. that said they removed a few levels, probably to save on cartridge space, but the levels that are there are basically ide tical, aesthetics aside.
>normies
you have to remember that quake 64 came out in 1997 when the average american was white and not severely retarded. mind you, playing quake with keyboard only was a thing at the time of release, so if anything playing on a controller with analog was better than what many people made do with. quake is very playable on controller. mileage will very for modern NPCs however who, like you said, will no doubt get raped by two fiends on their switch port and then make a video essay about it.
>>
What are some good retro collections for the Switch? The only one I'm aware of is the Sega Genesis Classics one, and it's pretty good I think.
>>
>>11275160
3DS have decent one.
>>
No, I don't like most of the retro collections from the big companies. But I think Ninja Gaiden Sigma is okay, it chugs a bit but the game runs at 60fps in handheld mode but the problem is that it's not as portable as the Vita not to mention that they removed content and the game plays differently. When they ported Ninja Gaiden they changed the Ninpo system, it's annoying but I don't think features should be removed. I know it's not retro but I bought it to play Bayonetta 3 which I haven't played yet

A modded Lite is a surprisingly good all-rounder for everything asides N64 and Saturn, plus the Switch Library itself is pretty good. I got one of those Satisfye grips and it's super comfy to hold too.

I've got that OLED mod screen on order, got the non-touch because nothing I play uses touch or if it does, it's a light gimmick. Also popped in some Hall Effect sticks so I don't have to worry about drift.
>>
>>11275116
It has gyro support, so that helps a lot.
>>
>>11275138
Quake 64 is a very good port that only suffers from lacking a few levels and some framerate issues on the more demanding levels, I played it this year and beat it on Hard, while a joystick cant compare to KBM for FPS, the controls were still really good imo.

DS and 3DS had so many awesome games in addition to all the ports we got. When they announced the eshop was closing I went in and downloaded everything and now have about 10 sets of SD cards loaded with various games.
>>
>>11276627
Shitty controls and poor performance. But the AM2 ports and DQ remakes are great
>>
>>11271775
Switch is weird for me. I used the DS and 3DS a ton for ports of old games, retro style games, emulator etc. Wonderful little handhelds. The Switch is, for me, a very uncomfortable handheld console, and if you're using it hooked up to a TV, just buy a Series X for the same price or something, no?
>>
>>11271775
No. If I was going to restrict myself to playing old games on modern hardware, I might as well just quit modern gaming entirely and buy a Nintendo 64. Nothing wrong with that, but I don't get the purist autism that happens on some of these forums.
>>
>>11271775
Yes. My Wii is mostly for GameCube, my Vita and 3DS were my handheld emulators until I bought a chinkheld a few months ago. I think my Vita had burn-in from LCD shaders.
>>
>>11276910
Nes is the only console that isnt absolute garbage. Granted, the vast majority of its games suck dick, but atleast theres SOME good ones. So no, dont buy an n64.
>>
>>11271857
Ikaruga and the Rayforce collection are great pick ups if you enjoy radiant silvergun. If you dont like ikaruga then I would say still check out rayforce. Top shelf ports, the both of them.
>>
>>11275341
>Quake 64 is a very good port
lol
lmao
>>
>>11277026
damn the n64 version has nice lighting effects
>>
>>11277042
I feel like the cranked up the saturation on the colored lights to somehow compensate for how weak the port is in every other way. Too bad rainbow colors don't really work with Quake's setting though.
>>
I use my Steamdeck for mostly retro emulation. A lot of games obviously look better in smaller screens (especially ps2) so it feels better playing them there than on a pc.
>>
>>11277026
Show the top at the native res for 1996. Top was on a $2000 PC that ran the game at 20fps
Bottom was a $150 N64. It was impressive for the time.
>>
I use my vita for PS1 games. There's always cool shit being translated into English so it's like I'm getting new released in that style.
>>
>>11277382
>It was impressive for the time.
So was Doom on the SNES, doesn't make it a good port.
>>
i want the sengoku ace games, how well do they emulate on that switch collection?
>>
>>11277382
>a cheap shitty version of a real game made for sale to children who won't care

That's Nintendo in a nutshell
>>
>>11275202
Do you find it comfortable using a dead set so low? It's the dealbreaker for all switch models for me
>>
>>11277026
It was fuck ugly, but it was the content intact and playable, which is more than I can say for Doom's non-PS1 ports.

I don't see the point either, but then again I don't get the point of emulation handhelds either, just use your phone, it's pretty much the same thing.

>I hate the touchscreen controls!
Use a controller.
>>
>>11271775
Like most japanese i use a retro gamestick 4K.
>>
>>11280263
i need a cheap backbone controller first, i hate those clip controllers
>>
>>11271775
I love playing Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered in 4K on my PS5.
>>
>>11278371
Ok. But Quake 64 *is* a good port though.
>>
>>11282917
>significantly reduced level geometry
>secrets missing
>hub world missing
>levels missing
>no co-op
>low res
>low res textures
>overly bright, overly saturated colored lighting completely destroys the art style
>shit soundtrack
>shit controls
it ain't
>>
>>11283383
Still good despite all this. It's much much better than the Saturn port.
>>
>>11277026
now show the pc version at the resolution people ran it at back in the day
>>
>>11283545
DOS Quake can run as low as 320x200 up to 640x480. Q64 always runs at 320x240 and remember, that shit came out in 1998 when GLQuake with even higher resolutions was also available for like a year.

I use my CRT and original hardware for retro games.

I don't use modern consoles at all.
>>
>>11281562
I don't see it happening, Backbone's like the Apple of telescopic controllers, tons of marketing and all about "premium".

I hope it gets a price drop eventually though.
>>
>>11271775
My Wii was a Super Street Fighter II machine for a while.
Once I got 3DS homebrew running, I couldn't get myself to play the 3DS versions of most GBA\SNES series.
I stopped buying games for Switch when NSO added retro, and I just went back to emulators on handheld.

>Plays Wii native, with back compat
>Can play GCN w/ nintendont
>Can play DS with VC injection and on the TV+gamepad
>Can play DMG/GBC/GBA on the gamepad at 1x integer scale
>Native HDMI + AV out for CRTs
>supports Wii remote, nunchuck, classic edition controllers, and gamecube adapter
Am I missing something? Is there anything at all a hacked Wii/GCN can do that a hacked Wii U can't? It seems like the ultimate emulation box.
>>
>>11277026
the n64 is running the actual quake engine though
>>
NES and Genesis on my PSP.
I found the SNES emulation on PSP not optimal ar all.
Wii for everything pre-5th gen including Neo Geo
>>
>>11289831
wii u sucks to play wii games on and VC is full of bugs compared to community built emulators
>>
>>11289854
>wii u sucks to play wii games on
Why?
>>
>>11289854
I'd like to know the details of this statement as well. I have an old collectors edition of my Wii U and only planned on using it to play wii games.

I was thinking of selling it cause I still have the box and just getting a cheap wii
