What's the best order to play Sonic
>>
whatever order you want it doesn't matter like mario. release order if you want to play them like everyone else did
>>
>>11283626
The answer for every video game series is release order
>>
Sonic 1 > Sonic 2 > Sonic 3K > Sonic CD > Chaotix > 3D Blast > Shuffle > Adventure > Advance > Advance 2 > Adventure 2 > Heroes > Shadow > Battle > Advance 3 > 06 > Rush > Riders > Secret Rings > Rush Adventure > Zero Gravity > Unleashed > Black Knight
>>
>>11283626
S1 > SCD > S2 > S3&K >Mania then quit.

If you absolutely must have more Sonic then honorable mention:
S3D and Spinball

1, 2, 3&K then Adventure 1 and stop. But if you just want more play 1 on the Master System, Pocket Adventure, Advance 1 and Heroes. All of the other games in the series are varying degrees of dogshit. Colors DS and Mania are also good I guess, especially the latter, but they are not retro
>>
>>11283790
this, sa2 is good imo but after that the series REALLY takes a dive in quality. when sonic games were first party there was a reason to make them good. it became mediocre autistslop after
>>
Start at the beginning, as you would with any other series.

Well I do think that the games on Nintendo handhelds are way better than the Game Gear ones but most of them are still not that great. If there is a game worthy of being called 'Sonic 4' then it's Advance 1 in my opinion. Mania is great but it's just a rehash and more of a celebration of everything classic Sonic than a full fledged sequel to the Mega Drive games
>>
>>11283821
this was the general consensus before mania got announced anyway
>>
I'd start by grabbing one of the many, MANY collections on your system of choice; legit, pirated, emulated, whatever.
Jam, Mega Collection and Origins are probably the best choices. Gems is an excellent companion piece to Mega Collection but by itself isn't a very good starting point.
Alternatively you could try a more generalized Sega compilation, a lot of them include at least Sonic 1. Again there's like a million of them, so which one you'd want depends on how you want to play these.

Sonic 1 > Sonic 2 > STOP HERE

Start with the mobile game, then work your way from there

I'd start with the Master System stuff since it's a lot simpler and feels more like a traditional title from the platforming genre, and if you like them then you can try out the more unique Genesis or Dreamcast/Game Cube ones, or maybe the more polished HD ones like Unleashed and Frontiers.
>>
>>11283792
SA2 is right when the nosedive starts. The games are only good up until SA1 then you get a teenage edgy game about sonic trying to stop the US government from committing genocide or some cringe shit
>>
>>11284259
People say SA2 sucks because of the story and overall tone of the game, especially compared to the magic of SA1
I say SA2 sucks because it simply doesn't feel good to play
>worse speed stages
>worse, and I mean MUCH worse, mecha controls, E-102 felt like a dream to control
>obnoxious search stages that are way too big and overstay their welcome
>>
>>11283626
release order or just do whatever interests you the most
>>
>>11284290
I agree with that too though. It doesn't have to be either or. I just replayed both recently and 90% of SA2 is a drag. At least the gimmick shit in SA1 like Big is short lived. The mech levels are awful
>>
>>11283626
Sonic1, 2, 3&K and CD
Maybe check out Chaotix and 3D Blast if you're curious

The rest is like Resident Evil Code Veronica: better to tell yourself they don't exist and any reminder of the contrary is painful.
>>
>>11284813
Why? Are the rest too easy?
>>
>>11284813
>The rest is like Resident Evil Code Veronica
Giving those games too much credit. More like RE0
>>
>>11284813
>chaotix and 3D blast over adventure
weak bait
>>
>>11283785
Cringe classicfag
>>
>>11283626
I played them in release order growing up but it doesn't matter now what happens
>>
SA1 > SA2 > SHADOW > HEROES
Skip all the 2D trash

Based Colors DS enjoyer, always felt Wii was overrated.
I'm going to namedrop Advance 3 as the last game that really felt like the classics until recently, it's basically what Chaotix should've been. Just the hub areas are unnecessarily abysmal.
>>11284290
Where SA2 really excels is the multiplayer battle and expanded Chao. SA1 has the better "adventure", but there's not much in terms of extras. Not even DX knew what to do.
>>
>>11283626
Just don’t get into the comics and you should be good. Or do because this is most likely a bait thread and you’re a disciple of Chris Chan.
>>
1 > CD > 2 > 3&K > Mania > SA1 > SA2 > Battle > Chronicles. The Sonic lore collection. A full story spanning 9 games.

Perfectly optional: The Advance games

At least listen to the OST: 3D Blast Genesis

Fuck you I liked it (but it ruins the lore and character): Shadow
>>
>>11283626
S1 > CD > 2 > 3&K > Adventure > Adventure 2
Most of the other games are decent and worth playing, but if you're going to play them in any order, the classic Genesis/Sega CD games going into the Dreamcast titles is the way to go.
>>
>>11283790
>recommends heroes but not CD
>thinks the master system games are playable
Lmao, don’t listen to this retard.
>>
>>11283626
1-2-3&K skip the rest
>>
>>11288763
It's not the 90s anymore, everyone has played CD, you can no longer pretend that a shitty game no one played is good ah but wait we are on 4chan, nevermind

Main Sonic games

>Sonic 1
>Sonic CD
>Sonic 2
>Sonic 3 & Knuckles
>Sonic Adventure
>Sonic Adventure 2
>Sonic Heroes
>Shadow TH
>Sonic 06
>Unleashed
>Colors
>Generations
>Lost World
>Forces
>Frontiers

DIMPS Sonic kino

>Sonic Advance
>Sonic Advance 2
>Sonic Battle
>Sonic Advance 3
>Sonic Rush
>Sonic Rush Adventure
>Sonic Colors DS
>>
Essentials (play these first):
Sonic Jam (contains the 4 megadrive games plus a cool Museum mode) > Adventure > Adventure 2 > Mania

Curios (play these after if you're so inclined, skip anything that sounds unappealing):
CD (I hate it but some people love it) > Mean Bean Machine > Spinball > Gamegear/MS sonic & tails games > 3D Blast (Saturn version) > R > The Fighters > Sonic Advance games > Sonic Rush > Sonic Heroes (again I personally hate this one but some people love it, might be worth a shot) > maybe Shadow the Hedgehog or that first Wii Sonic game (never played them personally, Shadow is very polarizing but I remember hearing good things about that Wii one at the time). I also heard the board racers were alright if that's your cup of tea. Skip everything else.

There's a lot of high effort romhacks/fangames as well. Sonic Robo Blast 2 and the kart version are worth checking out. There's a Sonic Tripple Trouble 16bit version that looks good, the fan romhack Before the Sequel has fucking excellent music but I've not gotten around to playing it. There's also a fanmade fighter that looks a lot better than Sonic the Fighters.
>>
>>11283626
1 -> CD -> 2 -> 3(and knuckles) ->Adventure 1

I see your picture is SADX. That’s a good way to play but you can also use an emulator (I use Redream) and play the PAL rom which has a widescreen code (and runs at 30fps, not 25). That would give you the most accurate representation of what the game was like on release but with a touch of modernity.
This is Sonic’s peak hype, peak cultural relevance, and best games. You don’t need to really play more than this, this is the peak.
>>
>>11290229
You skipped Pocket Adventure, it's also DIMPS
>>11290762
>(never played them personally, Shadow is very polarizing but I remember hearing good things about that Wii one at the time)
Really? It was so fucking bad it made Shadow look like a competent game. Black Knight was somewhat better but still very bad but people defend it for some reason

The best release of SA1 is original GDI US 1.005 (1999.10.05).

The best release of SADX is SADX PC (not the Steam release) with SADX Mod Loader and its dependencies, as well as Dreamcast Conversion and several other mods, which are sorted and configured automatically

You can’t beg widescreen on the US ISO, only the PAL iso.

They also have fucked up music. The museum mode is cool but all the content on it can be found online since it's just a few pics and FMVs, and the 3d mode is a 16x16 sandbox where you can't do fuck all.
