For those that have NSO, what retro games are you currently playing?
Right now I'm playing Donkey Kong Land since it was added yesterday, I'm enjoying it a lot even with if the jumping feels really off, after beating it I was considering playing the GB Mega Man games.
>>

>Right now I'm playing Donkey Kong Land
I'm so, so sorry for whatever events in your life led you to this tragic fate, OP. I'll pray for you.
>>
>>11399891
Ever since I bought my kids a switch in April and noticed all the retarded "this game is trash" threads were invariably on the NSO I've been posting
>the NSO and it's consequences have been a disaster for /vr/
Once a week
But since you're just admitting you have NSO and want to discuss the retro available I'll engage and say good job
>played through metroid fusion, it was good
>I've been playing blast Corps since I never beat it when I rented it
>Turok 1
>perfect dark
Never had perfect dark as a kid, just goldeneye
Also if you are a girl dad I Reccomend mario party 3 since that's all my girls will play out of the three once we realized it's the one where you can be princess daisy
>also
Have a nice day OP

>Perfect Dark
The last update made so much better to play, if I didn't beat the game recently on PC I would probably play it again.
Before DK:Land I was playing Turok 2 but that game feels laggy compared to the other N64 FPS on NSO, might have some input lag issues or something.
>>
>>11400056
I haven't tried turok 2 for the nso because I have it for my N64 and it would feel like sacrilege or wasteful to not play it on the original hardware. I'm not a "emulation is for posers" tryhard, it just feels like I'm betraying my console or something. I don't have the expansion pack so I'm really just arbitralilly fucking myself over
>>
I already find paying for PS+ and Gaypass retarded, despite the benefits. But NSO is peak stupidity

I’ve been giving Blaster Master an honest chance for the first time in my life.

They really gave us Donkey Kong Land, Kirby's Dream Land 2 and Mega Man V without Super Game Boy features. What's next? Donkey Kong '94?

>>11400139
Not retro obviously but if you end up liking it, you should try the Blaster Master Zero trilogy.

Hey if anyone has NSO (normal or expansion) and wants to play something online, here's my FC:
SW-7546-0332-3132
>>
>>11400146
IIRC they can't implement Super Game Boy support because it would fuck with the NSO save state feature otherwise. The same thing is what's preventing controller pak support on the N64 app, as well as why mainline Pokémon isn't on the service (mon duplication via trading then loading a save state).
>>
>>11400137
Nso is 60$ a year for online with their rom packages. Considering all other consoles have some sort of stupid pay to play online thing it's not any more retarded than paying for playstation.
>>
>>11400162
>>11400146
Might well add Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness and Hybrid Heaven
>>
>>11400248
Speaking personally, I go all in on a family membership with a bunch of friends. I pay like 11 bucks a year for it including the EP. I wouldn't want to pay full price for it but for what I pay, it's a perfectly valid way to play old games.
>>
>>11400229
Why can't they just disable savestates for those games?
>>
My issues with NSO:
>Irregular updates, some of the apps can be left for months without a single update, I think the Genesis app hasn't been updated for a whole year
>Lack of iconic games from Capcom, Konami, Square, Sega, etc.. because they would rather sell their own collections or remasters, leaving NSO with Nintendo games and a few random ass games they could get for cheap, sometimes it gets lucky and adds something from those companies
>The N64 Emulator is a mess, considering how good the other emulators are it's a shame that the N64 one is so mediocre, updates have made it better but it still has issues running some games (to this day they still haven't done something about F-Zero X having random framedrops).
I think the service is fine still and I like it, and at least Nintendo hasn't removed games from it like most subscription services (At least for now, maybe they'll have to remove Goldeneye one day due to licensing or something).
>>
>>11400318
My issue from lack of TG-16 and Saturn app
>>
>>11400318
These are all valid complaints. Some of the months are pretty dire, I mean just Donkey Kong Land? I do actually like it when they just drop a bunch of rentalcore slop on there. The N64 emulator does really suck but until the Goemon games or Ogre Battle comes out for it I don't really care.
>>11400323
TG-16 would be really easy for them to do. Sega CD and Saturn would be very welcomed but also more effort than they'd be willing to put in.
>>
>>11400318
The N64 emulation is fucky, every time they add a game it's got issues, but the next update usually fixes some or most of the issues, after everyone stopped caring.
>>
>>11400323
I would like Dreamcast, Master System or Neo Geo, DC could be fucky with VMU emulation though.
PCE would be cool too.
>>11400361
They're only somewhat consistent with the GBA and N64 app as they usually add one or two games per month (sometimes both apps get new games in one month which imo should be the standard), but they also sometimes skip adding games for no reason.
>>11400383
Yeah, I would like to know why Nintendo got iQue instead of NERD or NST to develop the N64 emulator for the Switch when everyone complained about the N64 emulator for the Wii U which was made by iQue.
>>
>>11399891
maybe not "retro" enough because it's technically a new game, but it's free to download and play if you have NSO and it's FZERO99.

fzero99 is easily the best thing to happen for fzero essentially ever. yes yes i know, sega made gx and it's fucking awesome, but if/when a multiplayer 3d fzero game ever comes around it will 100% be because fzero99 existed.

it plays incredibly well, it's very quick, races take 3-4 minutes, you will crash out a fuckton because the best racers are so fast you are constantly trading all health for boost to stay on pace, it's great.

easily the best arcade racing experience in a long, long time.

I feel like that game is cursed for me to emulate

I legitimately like all the 99 games and played them a ton. I even played that Super Mario Bros 35 game and was really good at it.

Pilotwings 64 because there's no good emulation of it
>>
>>11400318
Sums it up pretty well, but I’ll add to it:
>Unable to purchase anything outright. Years down the road when Switch no longer has NSO, your only official means of playing a game will be to purchase the newest console + subscription.
>Pricing options suck. It’s a bit nebulous because of the way the emulators and online services are bundled, but you really should be able to build your own plan (online only, choosing desired emulators, etc.) for different price points.
>N64 emulator is mediocre AND part of the *extra* premium service. Games like Pokemon Stadium will likely never have full functionality.
>GameCube and Wii games are reserved for expensive remakes despite Virtual Console hosting N64 games when they were much younger than GameCube / Wii games are now.
I think it’s all a bit disappointing and certainly not where I thought things would be when the original Virtual Console launched.
>>
Since Sega delisted their Genesis Classics collection, you think more Genesis games will get on NSO?
Or will Sega release another collection but this time with an emulator that doesn't suck ass?
>>
>>11401217
You'll get E-SWAT and you'll like it.
>>
I need to get around to beating breath of fire. Is it worth it to pay for the upgrade that includes gba?
>>
>>11401263
The current gba catalog is missing a lot of games still, and if you don't care about N64 games then it's not worth the upgrade.
>>
>>11401263
The GBA collection doesn’t have BoF but the SNES which comes with the standard subscription does.
>>
>>11401278
Sorry they're separate thoughts. I got to the fishman city when my sub lapsed a year ago and i never bothered to renew but might to play some gba games if it's worth the money. I just want to beat 1 and 2 so i can look at 3.

Current N64 games on NSO, currently missing from the previous virtual console:
>Donkey Kong 64
>Super Smash Bros
>Ogre Battle 64
>Cruis'n USA
>Bomberman 64
>Bomberman Hero
Also since they got Throwback & Nightdive Studios games maybe we'll see more Acclaim games like Forsaken 64, XG2 or Rage Wars.
>>
>>11401303
Smash seems a pretty obvious omission. Maybe they want to make it a big drop like they did with Goldeneye.
I personally loathe DK 64 but I feel like I owe it another shot after 25 years, if for no other reason than to confirm my dislike of the game.
Ogre Battle 64 seems like the thing that would not get any kind of rerelease so it's a good candidate for this.
I was a little shocked when I realized there were no Bomberman games, or any Hudson games at all on the service.
As sad as this is, the digitized bikini girls in Cruis'n would probably make it a hard sell on the NSO.
>>
The N64 games look so bad on modern screens without even the ability to throw on CRT shaders that it's not really worth it IMO. Boot up Banjo-Kazooie and look at how garbled the talking heads look. The font is hard to read, too. Mario Party's pre-rendered graphics are the worst offenders. What used to be atmospheric backgrounds and now just trash.
>>
>>11401321
I can think of Cruis'n USA getting a T-rating for "suggestive themes' now, iirc Banjo-Tooie has a T-rating on NSO.
>>
>>11401303
weren't snowboard kids 2 and bomberman 64 on vc?
>>11401772
This seriously needs to be addressed. I don't know anything about all these hdmi 64 solutions, but does it still achieve that result? If so I don't get the hype at all, it needs some kind of filtering
>>
>>11402825
Snowboard Kids? no
Bomberman 64? yes on wii u
>>
They should add Neo Geo to the service. They also need to bribe a bunch of companies like Capcom and Konami to add to it.

But yeah, the slow drip was notoriously awful and the selection after 7 years is embarrassing. At least they confirmed Switch 2 will carry it over so they won't just start from NOTHING again. That's *something*
>>
>>11403205
Yeah, I hope they don't hyke up the price once Switch 2 releases, say what you say about NSO but at least they have kept the price for both tiers compared to PS+ or Gamepass.
And yeah I'd love to have Konami or Capcom games, NSO would benefit from Goemon and Bomberman a lot.
>>
>>11403250
>say what you say about NSO but at least they have kept the price for both tiers
I still think the service is a bit overpriced, but admittedly, a lot of that probably stems from having the shoddy online services bundled with the emulators. Instead of the annoying “family” discounts that require customers to jump through hoops, I’d really prefer the option to customize which parts of the service I would actually want to pay for. But yeah, here’s hoping things don’t get worse than they are.
>>
>>11403205
>>11400404
For me is potential Karnov 3D for Hyper Neo Geo 64
>>
There's a cute girl i know that's into Pokemon Puzzle League, so I've been trying to get good at it to play it with her, but the game is just too fucking hard for me.
>>
>>11403273
I definitely wouldn't be bothering with this if I didn't have a friend who invited me to a family plan. I don't even use the N64 emulator because of the issues with the visuals. The SNES emulator's laughable CRT "filter" at least does make DKC look a little better on the screen.
>>
NSO N64 emulator sucks.
I'd kill to be able to use the transfer pack on games. IIRC it's even enabled they just choose not to. OK, fine no transferpack because it'd be confusing to the average user?
Then fucking unlock the shit from transferpack games.
It would take nothing for them to include the extra playable characters in Mario Golf / Tennis 64.
No transferring Pokemon to Stadium because of TPC? Fine, but at least give us some playable preloaded transferred Pokemon that we can use in the tournaments, no reason they can't give us something to be able to beat Stadium 1/2. People say Stadium 1 is beatable with rental Pokemon but I haven't been able to. Stadium 2 is even worse.

>>11401321
>As sad as this is, the digitized bikini girls in Cruis'n would probably make it a hard sell on the NSO
It woudln't be a problem but even if there was. There's a N64 17+ App that has M rated games, they could just dump it there. Nintendo owns Cruis'n
>>
>>11403205
They'd probably have to cut a deal with Hamster to get the Neo Geo games...and I don't see them doing that.
>>11403250
The fact it sounds like I could buy a Switch 2, log onto my account and all my Switch 1 games are immediately accessible is a major selling point with me. Also yeah the Goemon games are obvious additions as they aren't the kind of thing that Konami seems to have any interest in re-releasing.
>>
>>11403273
It is overpriced and yes I'd like to have a "make your own plan" but what can we do.
If they add another console to the Expansion Pack (and its something big like Dreamcast, NeoGeo or even Gamecube) then I think the 50 burgers a year would be "acceptable".
>>11404049
Yeah I doubt Konami would even bother with 64 collections because N64 emulation is way more difficult to do and I dont think they would see Goemon or the 64vanias as big sellers, maybe Bomberman but Konami seems to not give a shit about him outside Bombergirl.
So yeah, hand them over to NSO.
>>
>>11400047
I never really thought anyone actually gave a shit about the classic libraries on NSO. For most people it's a fun novelty to play about 5 minutes of Mario World the first time they get it, but then they never touch the classic shit ever again.
>>
>>11404073
>but what can we do
Nothing, except pay. I wish there was something called emulation, so we wouldn't need to be hostages for poor business practices.
>>
>>11404073
>what can we do
In terms of creating change? Nothing. I hacked my Switch and haven’t purchased any new games for a long time. Emulation is also an easy way around a lot of NSO. However, I know that nothing I do will create the change I want to see within Nintendo. That makes it more frustrating, honestly.
>>
>>11404117
I play mine extensively, especially since I have kids, a full time job and other hobbies and time is a premium. It's very easy to play say Zelda or Blaster Master or Goldeneye or whatever for 15 minutes, do a save then pick it up again when I have some more spare time.
>>
Last time I played nso was in February. I started up my switch last week and checked out nso for the first time in months and there were only like a total of 3 new games. Maybe I'm exaggerating but I really think there were only like 3 games total released in the last 10 months. The selection they currently have is great though but I've already played through most of it a couple times plus the countless hours I spent playing these games as a kid. Basically, we need some new games

It bothers me that Nintendo just slaps Japanese releases on here untranslated, for games with little to no text like Devil World it's fine but games like Panel de Pon need menu translations at the very least.
>>
>>11404441
I feel like they should put the Japanese games in a separate app like they do with M-rated N64 games. It's just useless clutter to me if they're untranslated.

>>
>>11399891
Is it just me or are the snes and nes emulators actually really good here?
>>
>>11404538
My only issue with those is the NES version of SMB3 has this really irritating green flickering on the right side of the screen as sprites are loaded in. They didn't crop it right or something.
>>
>>11404538
I think everything except the N64 is decent to good. There's probably issues with the Genesis sound but isn't that a lot of emulators?
How's the input lag? I remember when they first put Yoshi's Island in there I was having a surprising amount of trouble with what is a pretty easy game. But I feel like it's gotten better since then (I wouldn't want to try Punch Out though)

I just realized they didn't add the GBC alternate color palettes when I was trying DK Land on it. My PC is already hooked up to my TV so I'd rather just emulate there for more options. Still there's nothing wrong with NSO, it's a pretty good deal. I sometimes play games on it because I already pay to play Splatoon.

>I just realized they didn't add the GBC alternate color palettes when I was trying DK Land on it.
That's what gets me about the service. They do the bare minimum, at most (and not always even that much, see the untranslated Japanese releases). For paid ROMs, they really ought to roll out the red carpet here.

I'm pretty confident that Nintendo will do GameCube games on NSO, my feeling is that they'll make them Switch 2 exclusive as a selling point for the new console.

There's a lot of GCN games that could be on there, even considering remakes. Mario Sunshine, SSB Melee, Mario Kart Double Dash, all the Mario Parties, all the Mario sports games, and I wouldn't even rule out them adding Metroid Prime 1 + 2 and Paper Mario TTYD because there are already a few games which have remakes but are still on NSO (Link's Awakening for instance). They might not add the Zeldas though, depending on if they re-release the HD versions as full-priced games.

my hopes are gone for sbk online then, but bomberman 64 is gonna be fucking sick. Unlike turok 2, it'll be easy to get full rooms going. Shame because 2 can be fun with cheats

Who knows, I legit thought Goldeneye and Banjo-Kazooie would be the only Rareware games on NSO (maybe DK64) and that Nintendo would stop updating the app after they added all of their games but so far they're still updating it with shit I wasn't expecting (like I would never have expected Extreme-G, Shadow Man or Iggy's on NSO).
I think SBK could be added eventually, Atlus hasn't completely forgotten it (iirc the ost of the games is available on music apps like spotify and the like).

I don't even have a switch. The first party games don't interest me in the slightest, and any 3rd party games are multiplatform and run way better on other consoles. NSO is a fucking joke. There are free fan projects that provide a way better user experience. Nintendo presses a button and you get shit. They didn't even bother machine translating menus for the Japanese releases. What a joke.

I like this level in principle but goddamn sometimes those edges on the platform felt fucky.

You pay for the online service to access servers for Mario Kart and Mario Party and shit like Pokemon battles. The games are an extra.

Good, I don't want AI slop on NSO.

Goldeneye 00 agent playthrough. I haven't played it since childhood but a lot of it came back quickly. Up to jungle right now. I know its the hardest difficulty but there's a lot of bullshit in this game.

I'll do it when Switch 2 comes out. I play online with friends.

A funny gag would be for Nintendo to drop a bunch of crappy NSO games on the 24th and call it "Nintendo Ruins Christmas" or something like that.

This. It’s an online service that doesn’t even work. Smash and Splatoon are pure paywall jokes. Nintenbaby faggots cope that they are “only” paying $60/yr for a bunch of old ass roms that they probably bought and lost on Nintendo’s previous cash grab online shop.

I fucking loathe DK64 but I feel like I owe it another shot after 25 years
>>
>>11422903
This HAS to be building up to something more impressive right?

So far we’ve got a new DK game every week for the past 3 weeks. Surely it’s not gonna end at the 3 land games? It has to be DK64 and DKR at the end

even with if the jumping feels really off
Same. I don't remember the jump being that bad. I'm probably out of practise, but I may try to play it on a gameboy color with a flashcart, just in case.
>>
>>11424087
Land 1 has bad jumping regardless where you're playing it, you just have to get used to it.
Land 2 and 3 improved on the controls a lot.

>/vr/ now defends a subscription service to rent a few select ROMs that Nintendo still has the rights to that barely covers the NES library

Jeez... what happened to this place?
>>
>>11424898
marketers moved in and setup shop, first they came from limited run, retrotink, mister, chinkhelds, and jewtubers, then nintendo sent a few over and once the manufactured consent was forced enough people just regurgitate it on their own now. They didn't even need full time marketers, just enough to have the brainrot take root and then they left.

Super Mario 64 for me. Debating whether or not to go for 120 stars or just beat Bowser. Is it just me or are the colors desaturated? Yellows especially.
>>
>>11425009
It is absolutely haunting that you are playing a game that has a reverse-engineered PC port on a fucking paid subscription service.
>>

This thing has been around for ages and the SNES and NES libraries are fucking abysmal. I get these services are just throw away free add ons for people trying to play MK8 or Splatoon online. But I feel sorry for the retards actually paying $5 a month to play Fighters History or normal fucking Tecmo Bowl (not even super tecmo). What a piece of shit. Fuck Nutendo

Do you really think that? Seems to me that their respective libraries are quite adequate. I mean, do you play these like I do? The choice rivals old heralded collections.
(tl;dr we're so spoiled)
>>
>>11427253
I don't know what else can they add for NES/SNES, a lot of the classics like megaman, castlevania, tmnt, final fantasy, etc... already have collections.
>>
>>11427391
And for a little over 5 cents a day NSO gives you access to:
>NES
>Famicom
>Super Nintendo
>Super Famicom
>Game Boy
Not a bad deal at all. Btw if you didn't know, Nintendo allows you to change region stuff on your Switch without bricking it so you can enjoy the Japanese side of it.
Oh and I also need it for Street Fighter online, so it's a must.
>>
>>11427409
>I need it for sf online
You have sf30th?
I have it but the netcode is ass from the times I have tried playing it, I also have the first capcom fighting collection but it's dead as fuck.
The expansion pack has SF2 on sega genesis, which imo is a good port (it has both CE and HF).
>>
>>11427417
>You have sf30th?
Yep. >>11427417
>I have it but the netcode is ass from the times I have tried playing it
Let's fight right now, anon, get into the arcade mode and made sure you go into the online arcade option at the top ( I set my challengers to frequent) for SFII Hyper Fighting'-let's go!
>The expansion pack has SF2 on sega genesis, which imo is a good port
It is, I had the cart as a kid. Love the palette of all things.
>>

>>
>>11427452
That was you as Bison? lol you just kicked my ass.
>>
>>11427387
No, it’s not adequate. They are missing dozens upon dozens of the best 3rd party games. The library is poor compared to the a la carte options that were on Virtual Console.
>>
>>11427468
you weren't the balrog?
lol i guess i got the wrong person (surprised i found someone else, people just play 3s on it).
Anyways if you find someone playing Chun-Li, then that's me.
>>
>>11427481

Nah, I like Ryu. Sometimes Sagat.
>>11427472
>They are missing dozens upon dozens of the best 3rd party games. The library is poor compared to the a la carte options that were on Virtual Console.
Then turn on your Wii.
>>
>>11427472
probably because a lot of those 3rd party games already have collections and companies like capcom or konami probably get more money from those than allowing nintendo to add them to their services.
>>
>>11427574
>then turn on your Wii
I do. Because NSO is dogshit
>>
>>11428246
It's horrible that Nintendo keeps getting away with forcing you to pay for it.
>>
>>11428263
They're a major religion. There's nothing they can't get away with anymore. Right now they're peddling an alarm clock that subliminally brainwashes you right before you wake up, and it's selling like a Nintendo product.
>>
>>11428301
I see the opposite, everybody on the internet is non-stop shitting on Nintendo now. They even defend objectively garbage games like Palworld simply because "it triggers le nintendo!"
>>
>>11428301
Well, I am one of the bigger Nintendo fans that doesn't decorate my home like it or open my mouth wide enough to be a gore pron victim and some days I don't even play vidya.

>>11424898
Honestly it's an excuse to talk about the games on there for me, it's neat seeing people get hyped for Donkey Kong Land.

Never played, but I will now, thanks! The music is good enough to be reworked into a movie or a hit album if given to competent metalheads.
