I probably give it a 10/10 just because there isn't much better in the genre and all the content and production value and music etc. but they fucked up with difficulty balancing. OoT and MM had perfectly balanced difficulty for early 3D games, the combat was new and the puzzles were mostly new, in TP this isn't the case and a good way to balance it out would be less linearity and enemies hitting harder and less health items but it does the opposite and puts heal items in every room.I know you can avoid boss containers which helps and Hero Mode is a thing in the remaster but I don't like removing heal items COMPLETELY. They are a part of Zelda, they should just be balanced better like in the older games.
>>11498441Playing this after all the hype was such a fever dream, not quite meeting expectations but an amazing first playthrough nonetheless
>>11498446>Playing this after all the hype100 percent of the hype was that it wasn't the baby bullshit Wind Waker art style which of course does scale up nicer these days, but was absolutely not what anyone wanted after OoT and MM.Nintendo could have got this hype way earlier if they actually made Wind Waker visually more in line with OoT.
>>11498464>100 percent of the hype was that it wasn't the baby bullshit Wind Waker art styleBut people who loved WW (most people who played it) were hyped too. You sound mentally ill
>>11498464What's so baby about WW? It's a literal cartoon just like every other video game.
>>11498470I was alive back then. Nobody wanted baby link in cartoon town. Wind Waker did end up getting good reviews but you seriously underestimate how many people wrote this game off, especially because they were releasing it at a time when GTA and Halo were on top of the world. Literally everyone thought they would be getting OoT 2 with adult link and they didn’t. They bitched about it being gay baby shit so hard that Twilight Princess goes back to being more like OoT.>>11500385Because at the time video games were going for gritty realism, and naturally people thought OoT and MM going darker than Zelda did before would lead to something grittier on GameCube.
>>11498441OoT and MM do not have perfectly balanced difficulty lmao. They're braindead shit that will only provide a challenge to children.
>>11498464As if a new zelda game isn't enough to generate massive hype, bear in mind tp was one game removed from mm>>11500398Agreed. Ioved ww as soon as I got my hands on it. I don't remember anyone who didn't think it looked gay as fuck in the commercials.
>>11500398I was alive back then, too, and the reason why everyone was so disappointed was because of the Link vs Gannon tech demo for the GC.
I would give it an 8.8
>>11498446I kept waiting for it to become great but it stayed at "pretty good" the whole time. Trying to play through again is harder because of all the dialogue and waiting that goes on.
The youtuber cancer race was unnecessarily harsh with the game and I will never forgive them for it
>>11500398The obviously incorrect opinion of braindead retards does not make anything true. There's nothing baby about WW Link.
What's with all the zoomer revisionism ITT? WW did so poorly that NoA told Aonuma to cancel WW2 (which was already pretty far in development) and make something more like OoT/MM, so TP was made instead. And WW2's leftovers became the DS games. There are numerous interviews that corroborate this.
>>11500473It was because it looked like a baby game after OoT and MM. Kids at school said it looked like a gay baby game. Magazines ripped on it for looking like a gay baby game despite the many great reviews. The look of the game was a huge point of contention before it came out and that hurt it with everyone beyond Nintendo drones. The general mood of 2002 was grimdark games. Vice City and Halo owned it all and this game really did look like gay baby shit in comparison, the Gamecube being so kiddy in general really just hurt it that entire generation which is also why they tried the shed the "kiddy" image for a "for the whole family" image with the Wii.Stupid choices like that is why Gamecube came in last place. The fact they did a full reverse course and made TP the edgiest Zelda yet is proof of this. The hype for TP was WAY higher because it was the look people wanted back. People were overjoyed the Wind Waker style was dead and gone, they had their REAL Zelda back. Nintendo went all in with OoT aesthetic because that's what people wanted, just look at the OP pic. It's 100 percent a callback to OoT. That's also why TP sold twice as many copies as WW.
>>11500473I meant to respond to multiple people with my previous post but yes, that was also a large part of it. Nintendo at Space World 2000 implied the Gamecube Zelda they were working on was going to pick up where OoT and MM left off.
>>11500746but anon, if braindead retards existed in the past too, that means i can't just fling the 'zoomer' buzzword everywhere and i have to actually think about what's retarded and what's not
>>11500809>People were overjoyed the Wind Waker style was dead and gone, they had their REAL Zelda back. This basically. Between the Space World demo video, and the rising popularity of the Lord of the Rings movies, western audiences in particular were screaming for le "dark/gritty/realistic" Zelda, and 99% of that hype is why TP made such a big splash. I even knew a guy who bought Soul Calibur JUST to play as "real" Link on the Gamecube, lol>That's also why TP sold twice as many copies as WW.The funny part is that I feel like it could have sold even more if it were actually good and marketed on a system other than the Wii with it's gimmicky waggle controls. A lot of my friends who were dissatisfied with Wind Waker and were super hyped for TP had ended up simply losing interest in video games by the time the Wii and TP launched. Pushing the gamecube version release back was dirty of them, and I frequently come across people who don't even remember that it was on GC.
>make it through gay 5 hour tutorial>beat the first dungeon>finally walk out into Hyrule Field for the first time>camera pans around rolling green hills with bright green trees and glistening ponds, all sorts of monsters wandering around, the epic battle anthem kicks in>this is it baby, this is the moment I've been waiting for>immediately become a gay wolf again 10 minutes laterAnd that's the entire game: you're forced through gauntlet after gauntlet of gay bullshit to get to the "good" parts, and the good parts don't even last that long. It had a lot of potential, and it squandered all of it by being too linear and forcing you into too many overtly unfun situations. I don't want to be a furry and sumo wrestle, I want to explore a pastoral medieval world, kill goblins and loot ancient ruins for treasures. What a waste.
WW and TP were a step down from OOT and MM.
>>11502112that's because OoT nearly perfected the Zelda format and anything that followed it was doomed to live in its shadow.
>>11502112OoT is probably the greatest game ever made so I mean yeah a step down is unsurprising
Good but the tutorial is a bone breaker
>>11502124>do you ever feel le heckin' strange sadness at sunset...?>*Link sleeping on his one day off*>HEEEEEY...! >>11502124You mean bone-r breaker? That little white girl is angsty AF and Midna is constantly teasing you.
>>11502631Don't get me started on those moms in town.
>>11498446Playing this after all the hype was an immense letdown.
>>11502112all cube games are a downgrade from their n64 counterparts melee is the exception that proves the rule.
>>11498441dropped it because of how boring the wolf link sections and long ass cutscenes were. the two dungeons I completed were fine.
>>11503608Rogue Squadron 2 is debatably better than 1 and that’s the only other example I can think of.
OoT is still peak 3D Zelda for me simply because it's the only one that's actually not a slog to replay (sort of how 1 and 2 are in relation to other 2D Zeldas) but if we are talking about first impressions then TP is absolutely on par with it. It's also one of those games like SotC that actually make good use of the piss bloom filter. Last but not least, I think most people will agree that this game has better dungeons and bosses than OoT
>>11503614oh yah forgot that there was even a rogue squadron 1 lol. lucas arts gave nintendo a lesson in what the audience of their new console really wants and then gave us WW. I dont hate wind waker either I just think it came out at the wrong time when all of us were clamoring for gritty realistic big boy zelda all grown up from the n64 kiddy machine.
>>11503608Metroid Prime > hypothetical 3D Metroid for the N64
>>11503632>actually make good use of the piss bloom filterTP isnt all piss-bloom filter only in some places like the castle and the castle town.
>>11503704Factor 5 were wizards who were unjustly and brutally murdered by Sony.I did think of another one, F-Zero GX. So out of the entire GameCube library, debatably only 3 Nintendo exclusive games were superior to their N64 counterparts.I also agree. Wind Waker is ultimately a great game, it was just the wrong game at the wrong time.
>>11503809GX is probably an objective upgrade to X, but I would pick X's OST any day.I'd say Wave Race 64 is probably better than Blue Storm though.
>>11503901I’d say every other N64 entry ended up being better than their GameCube sequels other than what has been mentioned. Even RS2 and GX being better than RS1 and X is pretty subjective.Wave Race 64 > Blue StormMario Kart 64 > Double DashMario Tennis > Mario Power Tennis Ocarina > Wind WakerStar Fox 64 > Assault The list goes on.There was a reason GameCube was third place lamecube back then. They tried as hard as they could but couldn’t reach the same peaks they did with N64.
>>11500398>muh gritty realismTwilight Princess released around the time I started having sex which is why I never finished it.You should try it.
>>11504740Someone getting personally offended by refusing to believe people hated baby cartoon Link both doesn't have sex nor was conscious in 2002.
>>11503916Melee is infinitely better than smash64 too which you forgot. Mario party it is very subjective whether it's 2/3/6 or 7. And counterpoint, the gcn's new IP's made it worthwhile in its own way: I had a lot of fun with chibi-robo, pikmin, warioware & world (first proper console warios), FE PoR (first console fe in the west for most of us), custom robo, and mario strikers.
>>11504953Melee was the original game listed so I didn't mention it.see:>>11503608
>>11500765I really quite like Twilight Princess's aesthetic, but when I actually tried to play it, it was immediately boring as fuck right out of the gate.
>>11503608Colosseum > Stadium/2
>>11504953>Melee is infinitely better than smash64Melee is an unsurpassed all time top tier game, but the fact that Smash64 is a solidly great game in its own right and not simply a primitive prototype for Melee seems to be lost of people. It's much more responsive and focused compared to Ultimate and anything including and after Brawl.
main offense of this game is the super repetitive dungeon music
>>11504978Agreed. The tight roster and map selection also has it's benefits. Smash 64 is massively underrated because Melee exists, and let's be real here, SSB is the more soulful game. It was extremely novel when it came out, to pit friendly Nintendo characters against each other in combat with the most unforgettable commercial ever.I have fonder memories of SSB than SSBM.
>>11500809>That's also why TP sold twice as many copies as WW.It sold like that because it was a launch title on the Wii, you disgenuous faggot.Miyamoto also talked about TP not doing well in Japan as a result.
>>11506592People buy games, not hardware. They bought a Wii to play TP.And yes, the Japanese like their games to comfy, colorful and cozy. If it were up to them every game would be like that and filled with cute characters and catchy music. Unfortunately for them, westerners think that shit is mad gay, but that's also where the money is.
>>11503608>melee is the exception that proves the rule.Good
>>11506596Is that why BotW sold more in the west?
>>11500746Everything about Wind Waker is for babies though. It purposefully aims for a younger audience than all the Zelda that came before it.
>>11506618The west, which has way more people than a singular country? Wow.
>>11506592>TP did bad in Japan! Nintendo said so!>never mention that Wind Waker ALSO did bad in Japanhm hm hm
