These games were made by the same team of developers before Activision merged them into Treyarch and put them behind COD Black Ops games. Xatrix appreciation thread.

RTCW is a classic but back then COD1 and UO expansion pack really did blow my mind. That was the exact moment when shooters became what they still are today.

I distinctly remember coming home from school and blasting through entire COD1, and then later through UO in single sitting.

They also did the Quake II The Recknoning expansion

and fun fact: Starhunters was an actual, presumably Quake engine, game they were working on. There is very little information about it except they had registered a trademark.

Another fun fact: they hired two new level designers for Redneck Rampage Rides Again. One of them ended up becoming a higher up at Retro Studios. The other one worked at Valve starting with Half-Life 2: some of the vehicle levels from RR:RA and from HL2 are by the same level designer.

Viktor Antonov (RIP) also worked on Redneck Rampage and Kingpin before creating iconic Half-Life 2 and Dishonored art style. Dude loved urban decay.

where's the end of the video?

I always appreciated how RTCW was all about that oldschool fun compared to the FPS of the era where which more about "realism"

Realism era didn't start yet. It was still the post Half-Life era where developers focused on making the game level objectives more meaningful than colored keys, introducing puzzle elements, npcs and ingame cutscenes. RTCW follows the same format, typical for the era.
MOHAA started the "I am the small solder in a big battle" trend the next year and COD took it further by popularizing aiming down sights and two weapons slots. RTCW predates these games and trends.

It was just the last couple seconds that got cut off where he was saying you'll really get immersed in the game and have a good time, and then an early version of the logo for the game showed up.

Rtcw was surprisingly good. UO had some key sequences that were too long and overstayed their welcome.

I love RR. Just as good as the other big 3 build engine games.

Redneck Rampage was bigger than Blood and Shadow Warrior back then
>>
>>11634994
It appears as if Shadow Warrior was the only one of the three (SW, Blood, RR) that didn't do so well for itself in 97. It's also the only one of the three where I can find sales figures: Just over 100k units sold by 2002, half a decade later. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadow_Warrior_(1997_video_game)
Haven't had much luck finding numbers for Blood or RR.

Which Wolfenstein game was it that you were able to play around with bizarrely futuristic weapons that were time period inappropriate?
I think it popped up around the PS2 era...

RR got an add-on, a sequel, and a spin-off (the hunting game, not even counting the racing game) so it must have done really well for itself. I've always thought it was popular than Blood too, RR really seemed to have been popular with the rural American audiance. I've heard that RR games were also sold at a lower price at the counter of places you wouldn't expect to see video games (probably after the fact since the original release of the first game was 50$; though I doubt RA went for that price)

Obviously Blood also did well enough to get 2 add-ons and a sequel but it always seemed more niche.

Shadow Warrior was never big though. Critical and commercial failure and all 3 of its add-ons were cancelled. I wouldn't be surprised if the "recent" re-release sold a LOT more than the original game did though admittedly it's not a fair comparison considering there is a huge price difference between the two.

>>11635252
That's the one, Return to Castle Wolfenstein
with that said re-releases of the OG Wolf3D had a rocket launcher that didn't seem very period accurate either

Of course it was canceled. You can't be like "weeaboos are fucking retards" and expect to cash in on that.

RR has always seemed the more niche one to me, but until I come across anything more factual to suggest otherwise I'm going to assume they both did equally good. An area where I feel RR flat out wins is in the graphics department: Still looks great.
Seems to have the least inspired modscene compared to the "other three", however.

Blood's map scene back in the day seemed to have mostly been multiplayer maps while RR games did have quite a bit of single player maps.
Overall interest in Blood single player mapping has slowly been raising since the late 00's

It's really boomed in the last several. It and Duke have some strong presence in modding but SW and RR have nearly nothing these days.

As a kid I never played RR with the music, for whatever reason. I actually like the creepy atmosphere created by only having the sound effects and ambient noise.

Twin Dragon wasn't cancelled, it was released for free

>>11635270
Of course you can, South Park made a name for itself mocking weaboo's with its anime episode, and Metal Gear Solid made an entire character who was a pathetic, sniveling, retarded, coward, cuck, Otacon, who was a complete weeb. Although this is besides the point since the entire basis of the game was to lampoon kung fu movies, not making fun of "weebs", you insecure faggot.
>>
>>11635270
>Of course it was canceled. You can't be like "weeaboos are fucking retards" and expect to cash in on that.
There's so much wrong with this statement that I don't even know where to begin. If anything the devs of Shadow Warrior were "weebs," and Americans specifically obsessed with Japanese media wasn't mainstream enough for something lampooning them to generate either praise or blowback. And Shadow Warrior didn't even make fun of wapanese, it just had elements which were goofy plays on schlocky Asian action movies, just like what Duke did with Western action films.
>>
>>11635270
Mocking weebs is not taboo in the west. In fact, it's not taboo in Japan either.

>RR
Impressive but bad
>Kingpin
Huge glowup, but still rough
>Wolfenstein
So far their best game
>COD UF
On the same level as Wolfenstein

Black Ops, which is non-retro, is their best game. IDK if they'll let you discuss WAW, which was released on PS2. They technically worked on Spiderman 2, so that's their best retro game

I never got an answer for these.
