I can't think of a single instance where the PC version of a retro game is better than the console version, outside of games that were made for PC first or the version on PC is just an entirely different game obviously. Every single one I'm aware of is broken or worse in at least one aspect, usually it's across the board though. For example all of the GTA games are best on PS2 and no amount of retarded mods is going to convince me otherwise.There are a few modern ports that are okay, shockingly a number of them are still bad, and stuff like N64 recomps are pretty great but I don't really count stuff like that. If were strictly talking about PC ports from the era, I would stay far away from all of them.

Purely 2D and purely polygonal games look great when they're upscaled but 5th gen games take more beyond that to regain their proper fidelity. FF8 is one of those games.

You can't just paint over that and get the same look, you will have spent a lot of time and money on something that will be just as disappointing as what we got

It's an aesthetic but I don't think they were going for that textured smooth polygon look - it would be much better if a traditional artist would add some grit to it.For example in pic related you can see how the concrete wall in the bottom lacks bump mapping and looks quite unrealistic. This was acceptable at a low resolution but not at 4K.

I'm completely spoiled by the quality of life conveniences of running my game in the RetroArch environment where I can have things set up exactly how I want them to be with fine control over input and sound lag. The latter is very annoying in many new games and remasters, with over 100ms of sound latency.
