So far with 3 bosses I've soft locked the game a total of 6 times. Every time I kill the boss I get the victory dance and text box but no power up item, the exit and entrance remain locked. First it was occurring on the wall face boss now it's the minotaur. Please, /vr/os.... I newd to know how to avoid this when I'm this far. I'm playing the Japanese version on the famicom if that matters.

Check you aren't using any cheats, that's usually what causes these kinds of problems
>>

I wasn't even aware there were cheats. You're just fucking with me, right?
>>

I mean emulator cheats, I was supposing you were emulating, Even sometimes changing some emulator settings is enough to make some games behave weird because they have anti-piracy measures that can be triggered easily depending on how they programmed them.

Also check the game's not a bootleg if using real hardware.

That was my concern too. I'll open the cartridge up and check if it's a repo. The box and everything look legit but who knows. I'm not even sure what exactly I'm looking for but shouldn't be too hard if I cross reference it with any other famicom title from the time, right?

He fell for the real hardware meme.

I’ve played this game countless times emulated, official cart, ports, and the remake
The only glitch I’ve ever really encountered was just the AI getting caught on terrain

I've played it on PAL SNES and also had some soft locks.
I remember it happening on the wall boss like OP, casting spells against the slimes in the Mana Fortress.
Also in Santa's dungeon, my character used the whip to cross a gap, the other 2 joined him and then stopped. Nobody played the jumping animation and so they were stuck.
>>
i have a vague memory of this happening after the first boss on pal snes but I can't be sure

no one should use a romhack for their first playthrough
>>
>>12163736
conversely, if you're only going to play a game once, you should play the best, most fun version of it, which includes using hacks if available.

One of the most highly regarded, best games for the Best Console EVAR SNES, everyone.
>>

>One of the most highly regarded,

Correct.

>best

Not correct, unless the player is twelve. This is an easy game for undisciplined manchildren to praise because it was so much fun for them as kids, and so beautiful. It's a nostalgia trap. People with relatively high standards can easily see how awkwardly designed it is and how janky some of its programming is. It is unusual among SNES games that get a lot of praise in that it actually does kinda suck. Unless you play it correctly of course - that is, by being a twelve-year-old.

You are a stupid, bad person, by the way.

I never had this much trouble with the NA SNES version, but it wouldn't surprise me if I ever heard that some people did. The game generally seems to be held together with duct tape. OP, maybe you have a perfectly normal copy and you just need to keep trying until you get lucky? And, like, save your game often I guess? I don't know.

OP you are not alone in this. I experienced this bug as well many times. It is a rather infamous bug found only in the Japanese release. More info here:
https://i-njoy.net/sd2_14.html#0
Search under ボス戦いでのバグ.
The simplest way to avoid this is to not switch characters during the fight.

I am still shocked that no one ever mentions this bug outside Japanese shores. I know that most people play the English version, but still.

Thank you for the link, this is exactly what I was looking for. You're a god send, anon.
