A bit of a niche thing, but what's your favorite one?
And what's the most impressive one?
>>
Probably sonic battle of the actual games I played through and enjoyed. I think that counts as a 3d game for gba
>>
>>12163993
Were you just browsing the same simulant dev channel I was? Uncanny. That Asterix game is possibly the best looking 3D title on the system, but there are quite a few that land somewhere between Sega 32X and PS1 or Saturn tier graphics. Also some canceled games that never saw the light of day because Nintendo supposedly disliked the 3D game experience on GBA and discouraged them.

Then there are some canceled driving games some of these look pretty good, like this GP racing game, but the only videos were uploaded in abysmal quality so this is the best we get until somebody leaks the rom.
>>
>>12164123
This canceled rally game also looks pretty good for GBA, but it's hard to see under all the video artifacts.
>>
Does the i-Ninja GBA game count?
>>
>>12164127
And finally there was a Virtua Racing game that looks a little better than the 32X version, but is still way too choppy for something so simplistic, so I can see why it didn't come out.
>>
>>12164115
Asterix is some Europe-only title so of course nobody played it. I remember that lots of kids had these 3D Need for Speed games, for example, though.

There were some pretty impressive top-down 3D games that nobody appreciated because they aren't first or third person camera perspective.
>>
Damn, some of these are pretty impressive. There's also that guy on youtube working on a GBA port of Mario 64. It's kinda cool that he even got it running.
>>
I remember liking the GBA Duke Nukem game

>>12164105
2/10 bait.
>>12164115
>>12164159
I had Super Monkey Ball Jr. as a kid. I thought it was borderline unplayable and only popped it in for a few minutes at a time for the novelty between other games.
>>
got canceled but https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9va7ugOy5vo
>>
So other than Super Monkey Ball Jr., some more driving games, and a couple FPS raycasters, is there anything else not yet posted that really counts as 3D on the GBA?
>>
This is what I mean by raycasters, pseudo-3D games that can only render vertical walls and can't draw textures on other surfaces. People sometimes call this 2.5D although the effect can be quite convincing.
>>
>>12164526
banjo gruntilda's revenge was created in 3d
>>
>>12164213
>Sonic Battle is 2.5D.

wut. the arenas are 3D polygons and you move in three dimensions. the sprites are 2D, but by that logic, Doom and these racing games are "2.5D".
>>
File: Sonic Battle (USA).mp4 (2.89 MB, 360x240)
2.89 MB
2.89 MB MP4
>>12164537
Correct, Doom is considered 2.5D for the reasons explained above. It can't show arbitrary polygons, it's just using a sprite scaling technique to make vertical walls appear like angled textured surfaces. It's less of a 3D game than something that only has gouraud shaded polygons like Star Fox or Virtua Racing.
But this Sonic game I wasn't familiar with until now does seem to be real 3D. It's not comparable to a 2.5D beat em up so I don't know why that other anon said that.
>>
>>12164537
And it is definitely fair to say that some of the racing games do fall into that 2.5D category as well. The Need for Speed game here >>12164159 is using a combination of pseudo-3D tricks similar to Doom, Outrun, and mode 7, but there were other racing games that did utilize fully 3D environments like this Hot Wheels game.
>>
Nintendo: GBA has sprite scaling! You know for little flourishes.

White devs:
>>
Oh, who could forget about this launch title, the first game on the system that billed itself as "3D." But I think this one, too, is just using sprite scaling effects to fake it.

>>12164573
Speaking of which...
>>
>>12164537
>>12164553
I haven't played it in 20 years and just remembered that the characters were basic sprites that could only face left or right. Apparently I forgot what the gameplay actually looked like.

This V-Rally game gets mentioned a lot. I'm not sure if it's "full 3D" either but it's definitely doing something more advanced than just drawing walls and floors. Remember that the GBA has no polygon drawing hardware, this all has to be implemented in software on the ARM CPU.
>>
>>12164576

This one's fucking great. Have seen the 'proper' versions and to be fair this one's perfectly fine bar framerate, which is playable and better than SNES SuperFX performance. The console version is a bit limited, but as a GBA game it's perfect for quick burst play. And the awful vocal soundtrack is kept too! MAKE IT HAAAARD

So like I said, it's not 3D.
>>
>>12165456
It has X,Y and Z axis which are all used in level design and gameplay objects. That's the very definition of 3D.
>>
>>12164105
Bro you have 3D video games in your pocket. Like, you don't need to be home in front of a tv to have 3D graphics. It's mind blowing.
>>
>>12165639
No, it doesn't. It has the appearance of those things. It's a Raycaster engine.
>>
>>12165654
Raycasting is just how the graphics are rendered.
A lot of the little weird things Doom does are also intentional for performance reasons, later games running on the same Doom engine do not have infinite height and add jumping, for example.
>>
>>12165659
I'm glad we agree it's not 3D.
>>
>>12165659
The stock doom engine does not have height. That's why if you turn on no clipping and walk through a wall and opposite that wall, there is an area that is "higher" and accessed via stairs. You will clip directly into that area. You are misinformed.
>>
>>12165662
It is 3d, it has a z axis. Not all raycasting engines do, but Doom does.

>>
>>12165351
This one has a good engine, but very average weaponry and level design that doesn't stand out to me. Supposedly based on a PC game?

>>12165339
Decent, kind of a tacticool Goldeneye with mission objectives and such. I don't recall much about it other than I beat it though.

Lego Drome Racers is one not yet mentioned. Really nice sci fi buggy type thing, sort of Rollcage minus that game's gimmicks. It only lacks in music, but likely you can turn it off. There's a late game called Trick Star I wanted to put more time into, another weird scifi racer on giant....tyre things you can do Waverace 64 type tricks over the handlebars and shit on. Tricking earns boost and courses are very ramps/bumps oriented.
>>
>>12165746
It has a few levels from the game missing and just skips one mission completely
>>
>>12164081
That looks horrendous even if it's impressive. The isomeric games were probably as good as you could do on GBA
>>
>>12165339
ice nine is definitely the most competent gba fps. It even had multiplayer, although good luck ever finding anyone else who also had this obscure ass fps
>>
>>12165738
I'm American and I know who Asterix is, ignore that turd worlder.
>>
>>12166610
The isometric games that rendered a 3D Tony Hawk over a detailed 3D background make a nice point of comparison with the Asterix game at the top of the thread, which used 2D sprites for the characters scaled into impressive 3D surroundings.
The sprites end up blending in with the 3D world almost perfectly because the resolution of the screen is so low, especially the character sprites (you switch between Asterix & Obelix freely to access different abilities). I think it's arguably a better approach than Tony Hawk's. The screen is really too small to do justice to a carefully modeled 3D character, while that weakness becomes a strength with the opposite approach.
The video clip in the thread doesn't really do it justice. If you check it out in an emulator real quick you'll see it's pretty much comparable to an early PSX era 3D platformer, just with half as many pixels.
>>
>>12164105

>>
>>12166559
>Supposedly based on a PC game?
It runs on the Doom engine
>>
>>12166559
>>12166632
The issue I had with Ice Nine is that the auto aim is way too generous on the horizontal axis, rendering the game way too easy. The reverse problem that GBA Nightfire had.
Otherwise it's pretty cool yes, gotta play on Hard to get the most out of it, some missions are lengthened
>>
>>12164127
V-Rally 3 came out on the GBA and it is awesome, easily the best racing game on any gameboy. You upgrade your vehicle between events, and have a limited amount of points "time" you get to spend repairing different parts of your car between races during each event. 5 races per event. Lots of different locations, weather. Can change suspension/tires/etc based on weather and terrain. Kick ass game.
