does it feel wrong for anyone else to play games designed for handhelds on anything other than a portable device (either real hardware or emulated)?
>>
>>12164387
Yes, what you are feeling is correct, because you are using a faulty Super Game Boy that plays gameboy games at the incorrect speed.

You can buy a mod and solder it in to fix it.
>>
>>12164396
Playing GB games slightly faster is desirable 90% of the time
>>

Problem is the music is faster too

I mainly play only on OG hardware although I use SD flash to load on some older 8 bits, same for handhelds. I have a couple of very specific emulation machines (cabs and 8 bits and wierd CP/Ms) that are designed to match the exact phyical appearance. I'll give uou a few examples, play pole position, hangon, battlezone, spy hunter outrun or star wars etc etc in the original cabinet (controls and speakers similar at least) and they are fucking mazing, play them in an emulator on a keyboard and you will think they are shit, they are not shit, sometimes emulation is shite. Similarly shit that was designed to be played on a small screen with certain controlls and is excellent, is fucking shit on a 50 inch screen with a gamepad. Given what you can do with modern =batteries there is no reason not to just enjoy playing on the originals whenever possible

It depends, sometimes I can abide it, but it's not something I'll want to play at maximum display scale.

Super Game Boy, timing issue aside, had some magic to it though, just messing around with the UI and changing the borders around. There was a strangely comforting and welcoming feel to it, and it had some soulful Easter eggs too.

You could draw hints on the screen as well IIRC that stayed there during gameplay

i don't think i even unlocked the speed-up modes, but playing Pokemon Red on Stadium was every 'quality of life' improvement imaginable. it was in colour (sort of) on a screen i could actually see, and i didn't have to worry about the batteries suddenly running out.
>>

Initial revisions of Stadium had a minor bug where full stops in Pokémon names and nicknames would be changed to spaces. It was an error in how save data would read/write from the cartridge in the transfer pak iirc.

When you played the Pokémon GB games via transfer pak, it was loading a ROM from the N64 cart, not via the connected cartridge.

>and i didn't have to worry about the batteries suddenly running out
You know what, yeah. I forgot how inconvenient handheld gaming on original hardware actually could be sometimes.
These days we're spoilt by good backlit displays, rechargeable batteries, and sleep modes and/or save states to continue playing wherever we left off. I even have all that on an FPGA GBC thanks to a fancy flash cart.

>that feel when the battery light gets dim, you dont have any more fresh batteries and your parents are poor and cant just buy a fresh pack whenever you want

No I don't care about playing on a handheld but for me it does feel wrong to play handheld games with the picture being too big. Depends on viewing distance. On Retroarch I blow up the integer scaling by 3x I think since I'm like 3 or 4 feet away but it's still a small part of the screen. By default the cores on Retroarch fill the entire screen, which I don't like.

Just use a SGB 2 or GBA Player, SGB 2 has all these hidden.
>>
>>12164387
It is wrong because now you are comparing a handheld game to a console game and handheld games are usually vastly inferior. They get points back for being portable and letting you play while in bed but when you take that away they become pretty low value.

These lasted like a week before they stopped holding a charge.

I don't think so. While I do like handhelds and phone games, I favor consoles, arcades, and computer games more. With the TurboExpress as my only portable until the NeoGeo Pocket Color, I'd more often opt for games on consoles/arcades/computer. At a time when I had quit videogames, I mostly played GBA games on the Gameboy Player as I had a GameCube but no Gameboy systems. I even remember those kiosks which displayed the game on a TV, so it is just more natural for me to enjoy games made for portable devices in a more console setting.

No, it feels better.

I can do either, but it feels wrong to sit too close with it blown up to fullscreen. Not retro, but Mina the Hollower has that problem
