Contact hit's the "childhood summer days" pretty well, but it's a game for DS so not retro, and I guess that Pokemon kinda does have that sense of discovering new things.

Retro is not only graphics, but even in graphics the ds is superior to the N64 and it's absurdly superior to the Snes.

I know it's a meme, but I've played both 1 and 2 (in Japanese enumeration) recently and they are pretty great. Although they get much more enjoyable if you emulate and can speed up grinding. I wasn't even aware of their existence until I got a steam deck and started getting into retro consoles, because I've always been a PC only guy.
