Why didn't it use 3D characters?
>>
Because the N64 would've caught on fire. Some of the tracks already at 20fps in splitscreen as is lol

>Welcome to Mario Kart!
>>
Im sure they couldve figured it out if the game came out a year or two later but for most of the people making it it was their first 3D game and they were already pulling their hair out trying to get 4 player multiplayer to work.
>>
Because of 2D-3D hybrid ludosoul.
You nu-/vr/ retards will never understand.

I got my best times against the ghosts with Yoshi and Peach
>>
The reason they gave was that rendering all 8 drivers at once was not possible without using sprites. The team in charge of development was one of the less experienced teams and it was a launch title.
>>
>>12167797
When I was a kid I literally didn't even notice that the characters weren't 3D. Someone pointed it out to me years later and that's when I realized, but before then it just looked to me like everything was 3D.
>>
>>12167870
It's not really noticeable or distracting on a CRT, but people nowadays play it stretched on their 4K TVs
>>
>>12167797
Early N64 game so they played it safe because they didn't know how complex the maps would get and if it would start chugging. Later racing games proved you didn't need sprite racers but when there's a deadline approaching you need to make a decision early and stick with it.

Because it looks fine and not worth the performance hit
>>
>>12167797
They could get more detail with Donkey Kong Country style digitized CG.
>>
>low-poly 3D models that will slow the game down
or
>two polygons that show a detailed and smoothly animated sprite
>>
>>12167873
I don't really care usually since I don't mind sharp pixels and have been playing on emulator since ZSNES was almost new. However, for the N64, CRT really does matter. The 2d and 3d elements in N64 games are supposed to be seamless, and they are seamless on a CRT.
>>
>>12167921
>low-poly 3D models that will slow the game down
I thought the N64 was a powerhouse
>>
>>12167891
holy deconvergence
>>

In 3 and 4 player mode, the music's disabled too.
>>
CHADDY Kong had 3D models btw.

why didnt it output at 4k? where is the online?

That's just what tendies say to cope with getting a 64 and not a Playstation

Mog by Crash team racing with 3D characters, stable framerate and much better visuals

Poor tendies
>>
>>12168024
>lying
MK64 an DKR both run at similar speeds, which is to say 30-20 FPS.
>>
I know its impressive for 1996 standards, but MK64 is by far, the worst MK in the series. And by a fucking mile, the worst rainbowroad ever. What a snorefest
>>
>>12168068
best MK
>>
>>12167945
Stretching the N64 that bloody thin lmao
>>
>>12167797
Because Zelda 20fps for a racing game wasn't advisable.

Crash team racing 4 player split=music+30 FPS

Shame Nintendo

literally the second best entry after DS. though I could see an argument for putting wii version at #2. I cant imagine what kind of shit for brains youd have to possess to think the gba version is better.
>>
>>12167896
They, did? But the N64 bilinear smearing didn't help it?
>>
>>12168024
>>12168065
Both games have a 60FPS console patch, they could've run 60
>>
it was neat how cartridges made it possible to instantly switch in and out more sprites than could fit in the console's RAM. CDs could never.
>>
>>12167843
Yoshi because they still do the pitch-bent orchestra hit on the selection screen and they're the heaviest of the lightweights and my brother told me to race Yoshi

it always seemed a bit rubbish and you explained why, peak retro kart is crash team racing though, if you have not tried it give it a go

>>
>>12168889
Isn't one of the main reasons why some people consider Mario Kart 64 better than Diddy Kong racing is because of course design? Like MK64 courses are bigger and more elaborate than DKR. Maybe the reason why DKRs courses where smaller is because of the 3d racers?
>>
>>12169037
Might be personal skill issue, but I preferred MarioKart because it felt like I could win just on driving skills, while Kong racing was all about hitting the zooms. It limited the available lines.

The only people calling anything a "powerhouse" are Sega fanboys who are desperately trying to claim that Saturn was significantly better at 2D gaming than the Playstation.
All of their examples use RAM expansion cartridges, otherwise the games generally favor Playstation due to the transparency effects.
>>
>>12168068
Only people who haven't played in in decades or are completely blinded by nostalgia and autism would disagree with this statement.
>>
>>12168964
Stop advertising your shitty channel on /vr/
Your videos are the worst kind of algorithm chasing anyway, 15 mins just to say what could be said in 1 because 1 min videos don't generate revenue, lazy clickbait thumbnail, riding the news

>the worst rainbowroad ever
At least it made for a great F-Zero track
>>
>>12168068
>I know its impressive for 1996 standards
Rage Racer mogged it, and if you don't limit yourself to consoles, you had Scud Race in arcades
>>
>>12169037
>Like MK64 courses are bigger and more elaborate than DKR
Yeah this is true for most of the courses. DKR gets extra mileage out of its courses with multiple vehicles though.
MK64 is the better multiplayer game while DKR has the better single player.
Special mention for the jointventure code to do the sp campaign in co-op in DKR though
>>
>>12168068
I mean its technically better than super mario kart in most ways. But you gotta give super mario kart some leeway for being first.

My childhood friend loved the game and I would come over and play it with him. I think we would sometimes finish the entire game together in a single sitting.

But yeah I agree MK64 has a strange sterile and slow feeling to it. It mostly rides on nostalgia and decent track design. Sometimes as a kid I would start a GP at Luigi Raceway and it would hit me how slow the game felt
>>
>>12167945
and only the human players are racing
>>
>>12167873
you spend your time seeing karts from behind so it's not very jarring.
>>
>>12167797
Doom was so popular that even Mario Kart tried to be a Doom clone
