Why does it suck so much?

It doesn't?

it does though

Abandoned and incomplete failure of an emulator

You tell me OP

The problem exists between keyboard and chair.
>>

It is abandonware, just use one of the forks

>It is abandonware
*it is abandoned
Abandonware is different, that's when a commercial product is no longer for sale, generally because its owner and/or copyright status is unclear.

Dosbox is just regular abandoned, as there are no maintainers working on the original branch anymore. So yes, use one of the forks. Dosbox-X is nice

99% of the DOS library runs in mode 13h with a 70hz refresh rate. Unless you have a vrr monitor, Dos games will never emulate correctly on your end.
>>
>>12168436
What's your trouble with it? I emulated ~80 hours of TES2 in Dosbox and it was fine
>>

>Unless you have a vrr monitor
not exactly uncommon now
>>
is dosbox ece still the best for actually playing games, as in not random applications or irrelevant accuracy stuff?

It doesn't really matter these days. I prefer Dosbox Staging because it doesn't come with safety rails and lets me control where stuff is stored. Dosbox Pure and ECE come with nice managers, are relatively easy to setup but they leave bloat behind.
If one fork comes up with a nifty new feature like better joystick support, others will quickly incorporate that fix into their forks.
>>
Wake me up when there's a fork of DOSBox that actually let's me bind diagonal keyboard inputs to the gamepad.
>>
what to actually use? I have Launchbox, but it's fucking bad.

OP is a secondary, never had to use DOS, and gets scared when she sees a CLI

Like all emulators it's fine for the things it's fine for and rubbish at everything else. Sometimes you just have to be tautological.
They don't bother to emulate much of the PC beyond the bare minimum so anything outside the mainstream tends to fail or work incorrectly. 3dfx support is especially poor outside of glquake and some of the more popular 3dfx patches.
86box is significantly better, but it's not great at being a game focused emulator with its high input lag.
>>
>>12169564
The latest versions of 86Box have greatly improved on input lag, at least for me. There is, however, still considerable audio lag.
>>
>>12168436
DOSbox is very hackish like early generations of emulators tend to be: NESticle, ZSNES, eSPXz
And on top of that it's not really a full system emulator but rather a compatibility layer.
I use it for convenience for simple tasks but, when I need compatibility, I use PCem or just any x86 VM
>>
>>12168436
Because the devs don't give a shit. The last stable update was back in 2019, and that version didn't really do anything better than the previous stable version from 2010. I'm used to dealing with its jank, but I wouldn't call it a well-designed program.

Because you’re using the abandoned original instead of an active fork:

It isn't enough, we must go deeper.

how does it run?
>>
>>12171124
NTA who posted that, but I did take the original screenshot. It runs like shit. 86Box already struggles to run Windows 2000 without anything open, and doubly so when running any emulator.
>>
>>12169998
Yo dawg, I heard you like emulators.
>>
>>12170021
>>12168704
I'm using Daum because it's Dosbox + save states. It's abandoned probably because it's based on the original Dosbox.
Tried Dosbox-X or the other one because /pc98/ anon said that it has built-in Japanese font support for running PC-98 games. Didn't like it because they change all the hotkeys which I'm familiar with.

Mainline DOSBox is very much still being actively developed. You can see their commit history here:
https://sourceforge.net/p/dosbox/code-0/HEAD/tree/dosbox/trunk/
They just for whatever reason space out stable releases many years apart. Forks like DOSBox-X and Staging just take their code and add their own features on top.
>>
>>12172237
Oh, I was unaware since nobody in their right mind uses sourceforge anymore.
>Create AI apps with MongoDB
Like, fucking seriously?
>"But MongoDB is webscale"
It's no surprise that people don't want to deal with that shit. What kind of lunatics are running that project, anyway?
