Ultima IV had more complex mechanics than any RPG made in the last 40 years. Why did the entire genre stagnate like this?

I don't mean copying the Ultima IV virtue system. I just mean in general experimenting with new mechanics instead of making the same exact games for 40 years. Game devs just completely stopped inventing new game mechanics decades ago. The only kind of "experimentation" that happens now is combining two existing game genres together, which isn't any better. Why does nobody have new original ideas anymore?
