Sonic 1 was fun because you had to run or use slopes to gain momentum. That's how you e.g., got around loop-de-loops, or flew up to higher places.

Sonic 2 adding a 'go fast, immediately' move was a terrible idea. They must have known this because you CAN play the whole game without it, and it's a much better experience.

S2/S3K incentivize Sonic 1 style mechanics in a lot of places and using them makes a lot of stages more fun to play

nah fuck that shit in Mario, you're always holding B anyway. it would make MORE sense to have a 'walk' button (sounds mad but think of the way PC FPS games do that sometimes).

as it stands though, they aced the speed as-is. even with a D-pad, i never felt like i didn't have enough precision to land on an enemy. i could just...do it. maybe it's the larger tiles/sprites?

It was also in Sonic CD, which was developed at the same by an entirely Japanese team.
More likely, people complained about not being fast enough and the spin dash was the obvious conclusion.
