Who remembers grinding away for hours on group raids and having a blast before they nerfed shit in the game to take all the fun away?

Thanks EQ for totally fucking up the druid class.
>>
I set up a local server for Asheron's Call, shit it so cash man. Although I wish it were retail release build for nostalgia, as opposed to the 2017.

the oldest visual mmo is furcadia and christ almighty I wish I did not know that.
>>
All the cool kids played EverQuest. Only losers played AC.

>the oldest visual mmo is furcadia
That's wrong though. It's a graphical MUD. Graphical MUDs have existed since the mid 80s.
>>
I love how different the classes are in Everquest
It's not just combat abilities but also changes how you interact with the world

first 3D MMO was Meridian 59 but nobody cares. Ultima Online was the first really popular MMO and Everquest was the game that really put 3D MMOs on the map.
>>
>>12220498
Meridian 59 was 2.5D

For me, it was a 10x private server ganking orcs as a rogue

I like some aspects of E&B but at higher levels it just turns into space Everquest

Holy shit, I remember reading posts about this back in the day. Endgame dragons were supposed to be the equivalent of an entire raid force of other players or something. Poor naive devs, completely ignorant of the depths of MMO player degeneracy.

You're telling me this shit actually released?
>>
>>12220789
I dunno man, I literally am still mad about that time they updated the engine to DirectX 9:

>raiding Sleeper's Tomb
>corner tank the dragon
>update broke collision and it gets pushed through the wall
>dragon is now under the raid
>it can attack us from underneath
>summons people individually if they tried to run
>hours later, a GM recovers our corpses for us since they are under the world

That would have been a significantly less shit evening if the height axis was less janky.
>>

NPC pathing is handled server side, the client being "upgraded" to DX9 is irrelevant.
>>
>>12224902
"NPC pathing" is irrelevant.
They handled collision detection on the client, which is why a lot of the hacks worked. It's also why the old, offline tutorial worked just like the game.
The patch that introduced DirectX 9 broke collision in many terrible ways. You would get stuck on random objects that were never a problem. And, for a few terrible weeks, any amount of knockback could push a mob through things like walls, which did not happen before.
If you were there, you would know. But (You) weren't.
>>
>>12224934
What are you even talking about? No, your client did not tell the server where the NPC is, that doesn't even make sense. The client handled *your* collision, not NPCs.

Imagine arguing over this when vanilla WoW exists.
>>
>>12225343
I was bored of mmorpgs by the time WoW came out. I played WoW to lvl 46-47 or so with a bunch of my EQ friends and because I wanted to see what it was like. But I quit after 3 months and never player another MMO.
>>
>>12225343
the only thing cool about vanilla wow is that people were so bad at video games back then that I once 1v20'd every alliance in a zone on my same level rogue
