Which is the oldest, permanently-online since its release, MMO/virtual world currently? Now that Worlds.com is officially gone for good, the debate is reopened.
idk probably mud1https://www.british-legends.com/CMS/index.php/play-the-game/play-in-your-browser

Meridian 59 has existed since 1996, but it was offline for about two years between 2000 and 2002 while rights were sold off/transferred.I never really hear much about this game, guessing because it was overshadowed by Ultima Online and later Everquest but I have noticed it's free on Steam. What's the general consensus? Is it worth a look?
>>12219857>Attack helicopter xDDDDDDCull every single boomer. Death to boomers. Commit suicide if you find any amusement in that phrase.Truly. Kys.
>>12219867The attack helicopter joke is a timeless classic. Why so upset?
>>12219858oi m8 mud1 went online in nineteen-dickity-six at the jolly old price of 15 sterling crowns per minute
>>12219865It's bad. Really bad. Always was. Text-based MUDs of the era totally mogged it.>>12219869>Why so upset? You know why.
>>12219869Only neoconservative Israel worshipping boomers find it funny. I can't wait until you all die from diabetes.
When did worlds go down? I didn't hear about this
>tfw you will never be a froglok
>>12219881Anon, you seem to have gotten lost. /r/eddit is down the hall on your left.
>>12219881Attack helicopter is a millennial joke. What does antisemitism have to do with anything?
>>12219894le attack helicopter isn't even reddit, it's Facebook. How does it feel to be infinitely more pathetic than even reddit? You don't belong here. Go die of a heart attack loser.
>>12219814The oldest MMO still going that anyone ever gave a shit about is Ultima Online. Everything before then is either too niche/obscure and forgotten or offline and lost/nonfunctional.Is there a good private server for it these days?
>>12219903Your friends and family laugh at you behind your back.
>>122199032/10 bait I replied twice.
>>12219814>Worlds.comDon't tell anybody, but there's a Worlds.com "clone", released a few months after Worlds.com, which is still playable. Its name is ActiveWorlds and from what I have seen in some recent YT videos, it's even more dead than what Worlds.com used to be one or two years ago.
>>12219913Your stoke is coming soon boomie>>12219909Everyone laughs at your sad aging obese decreipt ass.

>>12219848this, probably some mud.I remember trying some mud or mush about ten years ago, wish I could remember the name of it now. And it was pretty desolate, but it still had old players just hanging out in the tavern in the starting town.
>>12219934Kino
>>12219814I didn't know Worlds.com was down for good, but yeah its true. Damn, that makes me sad. Used to go hang with the furries there back 2012 and explore the long-dead worlds It needed to happen though, the IP got taken over by NFT cancer
>>12219908I just want to autistically mine ore in the mountains west of Britain.
>>12219857>M for male, F for femalethis really triggered anon that hard?

>>12219814Nexus TK>inb4 "who?"you know that one huge gaming company that everyone's hating right now? yeah it owes the name from this game.
>>12220116played this as a kid, was fun but I only remember killing monsters over and over and gambling to upgrade my gear so it started shining. To this day no MMO has armor as cool as this game and the fucking wings man. I want cool ass wings.
>>12219865It lacks content and uses the “it’s a pvp experience” as a cope. It’s neat and I have a lot of respect for it but you’d be better off playing a MUD like aardwolf which actually has things to do.
>>12219814technically runescape 3 I guess.
>>12220631The ad got me so excited as a kid but there was no way my parents were going to pay for a monthly sub. I imagine it's just jaded millenials left playing it at this point, I don't even know how you'd find it if you didn't already know about it
>>12219903You will never be a woman.
>>12220631I literally only know about Nexus because some /f/ag makes OC and a couple of his things were about that
If this game has been permanently online the whole time since release (it looks like it), I think we got a winner:The Realm Onlinehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Realm_Online
>>12219814>still alive>posts eqI don't think defiling a corpse counts as living

>>12222559>ACgood if you're a tank, otherwise you're 1-rounded regardless>hp/mp/eneffectively standardized by tier anyways>all those stats and heroic statsyou're already capped on mods, hdex is the only one that will provide real benefit and only if you're melee>resistslollmao>luckyou're capped anyways>attackyou're capped anyways>hp/mana regenthey could add 3 zeros to those numbers and they'd still be negligible>heal amount/spell damage/clairvoyance/frenzybasically fake stats, beyond trivialbasically the only thing that matters in modern eq are weapon ratio, hdex, ac, base damage augs/effects, and procs. crit scaling is so out of control that if your spells don't crit they might as well had been resisted entirely and only things that scale with crit (base damage modifiers, twincasts, and procs) even effect the parse
>>12222341You can really see Sierra's fingerprint in the designs of the chicks in that game. All the women in picrelated could be Leisure Suit Larry 6 characters.
>>12222559Wow ruined gear for every mmo.
>>12223738WoW at least crunches now and then. EQ is just 97 expansions of vertical progression.
>>12219867Bro calm down. All I can say is that at least vintage MMOs didn't have dumbass "pronouns" that literally destroyed any worldbuilding immersion. Now post your own favorite vintage MMO my good dude.
>>12223738WoW gear was always incredibly simple. Like 3-5 stats tops on a given item, and maybe a few gem slots, and it was always immediately obvious what role the item was for. They looked at shit like EQ and knew all that stat bloat was pointless and fixed it.
I sexually Identify as an Attack Helicopter. Ever since I was a boy I dreamed of soaring over the oilfields dropping hot sticky loads on disgusting foreigners. People say to me that a person being a helicopter is Impossible and I'm fucking retarded but I don't care, I'm beautiful. I'm having a plastic surgeon install rotary blades, 30 mm cannons and AMG-114 Hellfire missiles on my body. From now on I want you guys to call me "Apache" and respect my right to kill from above and kill needlessly. If you can't accept me you're a heliphobe and need to check your vehicle privilege. Thank you for being so understanding.
>>12223863>oilfieldsGeneration Kill is a hundred times better than JarheadWhy has there never been any MMOs involving guns and tanks?
>quit EQ early Velious to go play DAoC or AO or some other new release with my bros>a year later>see new expansion coming out, you go to the moon>sounds dope>buy that shit>log in>wtf my character is hideous now>zone into nexus>3fps, pitch black, surrounded by equally hideous characters>immediately uninstall and cancel my account
>>12219914>Don't tell anybodytoo late. Making a chatgpt-written video essay about how its a le spoopy backrooms cult driven epstein video game. The servers will be flooded with tiktok tweens and vinesauce fans, mwahahaha
>>12225143Ironically if EverQuest never changed its graphics style and didn't degrade into such degenerate gameplay and cashslop, they would've hade a huge revival when retro became mainstream.
>>12225306>>12225143Luclin was a huge disaster. Was funny at the time to see all the people trying to defend those ugly and badly-animated new character models.Meanwhile the new gameplay content was unfinished, unbalanced and generally shitty.AAs were a pretty good idea though.
>>12225918AAs were wholesale lifted from MUDs at the demand of the neckbeard community. And fundamentally speaking they're bad design. There are no builds or anything, you just max them all out, and until you get like 2/3rds of them your character is useless. It's just leveling in disguise.
>>12219881was there supposed to be humor in this comment? get fucked yakub>>12219871anons help me out. new fag here. what is a MUD?
>>12227365"Multi User Dungeon." It was a mostly text-based online type of game.
>>12220116Played that as a kid, some modified servers of it, anyway, got scammed by what I imagined to be my friends. Redpilling game.
>>12227141it got even worse later on when you had to spend aas to buy consumable glyphs that gave massive short term buffsthey started balancing raids around the use of glyphs and suddenly you had to spend 8 hours before every raid stocking up aas, especially if you were a tank
>>12220957>but I only remember killing monsters over and over and gambling to upgrade my gear so it started shiningpretty sure this was every single early 2000's mmo, lol.
>>12228134only asian mmos had gambling to upgrade your gear
>>12227365>what is a MUD?Imagine Zork, but multiplayer.
So, for now, we have:June 1995: Active Worlds (oldest virtual world still alive)October 1996: Meridian 59 (oldest MMO still alive)December 1996: The Realm Online (oldest 2D MMO still alive)
>>12228745MUD1 is literally the fpbp...

>>12219865I bet this game was so magical back when it released. The very early MMO era was a great time.
>>12219814Furcadia iirc.
>>12229031If your only "non-playable moments" have been a few hours here and there for maintenance reasons, then you have been online uninterruptedly in my book.
>>12228914MUD1 was always playable. It's just hosted on multiple sources now.
>>12219814maybe tibia online, came out even before ultima online.
man, I tried to get into eq a few months ago and it's impossible without throwing money at it, everything is designed to force you to pay for 3-6 accounts
