There's no possible way they named this thing "PlayStation".
Imagine a bunch of Japanese going around yelling "Pray Station! Pray Station!" forcing people to pray to some god of Station.
It's called the PSX.
End of conversation.
I dare anyone to reply, but I know you won't because you're all too afraid.

It was called Playstation IRL and PSX in magazines/online
When the PS2 came out people started calling the PSX just PS1 online cus it was easier

It's more British than Californian. All the iconic marketing originated with London advertising firms and PS Europe creating a slush fund for marketing stunts and a lot of the notable games were developed in the UK.
>>12308772
It was called PSX in the playground by kids that read the mags and wanted to sound in the know

When it first came out most kids called it PSX. To this day my rom folder is still titled PSX.

Early development hardware was called PS-X (PlayStation - Experimental), so I'm assuming that's where the press picked it up and decided to run with it
>>
>>12308754
never was an actual thing. psx was the ps2 mediastation. the ultra 64 however was real. everyone I knew and every magazine called it the u64. same with dolphin.

They did. That's how the commercials sounded.

The abbreviation PS1 wouldn't have made sense before there was a PS2 for contrast. PSX was supposedly what it was called before it was released (at least in part to parallel MSX), which I'm too young to remember personally. After it's release, you'd often see abbreviated in written media as PSX. It's made more confusing because Sony released a slim edition of the PlayStation around when the PS2 came out called the "PS one," and then produced another PS2-era device called the PSX (pic related).

It's not just development, it's also the final version. Literally every single bios and every single game released for the platform has "PS-X" in it. Every, single, one.

It's also referred to as the PS-X here on a Japanese TV show (Tonight) in early 1994 before it was released, reaffirming that PS-X was the code name for the system before it was launched.

It must make sense to the Japanese mind somehow, but surely NGC would have made more sense as a successor to the N64. And actually Wikipedia says Japan abbreviated it GC and that GCN was only used for America and Europe. Crazy.
>>
>>12310796
The NGC abbreviation is used by Emil Dreyer's New General Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars. GCN makes as much sense as Nintendo's earlier console abbreviations like HVC for the Famicom.

>The NGC abbreviation is used by Emil Dreyer's New General Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars

Dude.
>>
>>12310895
>Emil Dreyer's New General Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars

I can see the confusion that would have caused. If you were talking about video games and said "NGC," people might think you're saying that you play video games on Emil Dreyer's New General Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars, which would be very confusing indeed.

The difference is magazines used the term pre and post launch based on Playstation Experimental where as Sony avoided it on packaging (other than the actual PSX). Sega System and Power Base Console were used by Sega on official packaging due to laziness around branding that wouldn't happen now to show it parallel to Nintendo's Entertainment System when American parents understood everything to be Nintendo.

Fun fact: there are at least 8 instances of "PSX" in that same magazine issue.
>>
>>12308754
It was code named the PSX which stood for the “PlayStation eXperience”
>>
>>12311782
It stood for Experimental and unlike Sega they didn't sell the console under a different name
>>
I'm pretty sure they dropped the X when everyone realised that it didn't actually stand for anything. I recall some magazines used "PS" if they absolutely had to abbreviate it, but nobody cared. It's just permavirgins that insist it was called the PSX throughout its entire lifetime.

well actually the real name is the sony master station.

I think it was used more in UK and Europe, which is why you often get Americans not remembering it. These are Taiwanese manufacturers (Gamars, Smart DJ)

>>
>>12312241
calling it the psx is cringe and the filipino guy in the image agrees
>>
>>12312272
They're not the same. PSX was never used on packaging and boxes because it was only a development codename but unlike the Ultra 64, it did come into common usage (especially outside of the United States).

Sega System and Sega Super System were real names that were on the various boxes as the main name but were never in common usage as it was just lazy marketing for the Master System when Nintendo had tried to reset relations with American toy stores by calling it an Entertainment System. It was Master System or the Sega in common usage.

also I can't believe people are seriously debating this. yes in the 90s the abbreviation for playstation was PSX. It was in every game mag and website and how people referred to it on their own little geocities/angelfire/aol hometowns websites. in person we usually always just said playstation but in aol chatrooms people would say psx. what a stupid thing to question when you can see all the references to it.

ps1 only became popular when the ps2 came out. I remember in forums and chat rooms people would mock you if you called it ps1 instead of psx. "ps1? theres only 1 playstation. its called the psx for short".

the weird abbreviation is like how Nintendo Gamecube became "GCN"

even my anbernig knulli playstation folder is called "psx", I didn't name it that. if you were born after the ps2 was already invented then of course you wouldn't have a clue about reality.
