As far as first games in a franchise go, this game is a fucking masterpiece. Sega somehow perfected the formula for sonic games with just the very first game, you could of made every other sonic game in the likeness of the first for all of human history and they'd be pretty good. Sonic 2 is a good example of that, same formula but just more speed orientated levels over traditional platforming.

This game could have saved the Sega Saturn
>>
>>12586691
it's the simplest one but despite being rushed and buggy it still feels like the most polished one. the difficulty also has a better progression, save for the very cheeseable bosses.
>>
>>12586691
>no spindash
This kills the zoomer.
>>
>>12586708
This game was on the Sega Saturn via Sonic Jam
>>12586727
It's by far more polished than a lot of games released at that time, i've played this game like a trillion times and only noticed few bugs. (Except that annoying spike bug)
>>12586729
The lack of spindash is nice to keep the game challenging, not like it would've worked well in this game's stages anyway.

I still remember the first time I saw it shortly after launch. I was about 5 years old and had only ever played NES and Atari a few times at my cousins. We went by a friend of my mom's house and the lady's husband said "Hey you like video games? Check this out" and showed me the Genesis and booted up Sonic 1. My jaw was on the floor and my mind was blown. All I could think about after that was getting a Genesis of my own and I eventually did a year later.
>>
>>12586741
*I had an NES but my cousins had gotten out an Atari that they'd had before they got their NES a few times when I was over there

I grew up as a Nintendo kid so I didn't get a chance to own a mega drive for a long while, getting a taster of the mega drive sonic games was an amazing experience.
>>
>>12586753
Yeah I was Genesis all the way, even had a Sega CD and quite a few games for it including the light gun and Lethal Enforcers. Me and my friend used to play Adventures of Willy Beamish trying to finish it, we'd play all night on weekends sometimes. I don't think we even finished it but we got right to the end. Android Assault was fuckin rad for it too.

After that I went N64. Back then I wasn't really into RPGs so I had a blast with it though years later I would think I should've chose Playstation for the RPGs. I was really into wrestling though and those THQ games were so good. Got a Dreamcast after that though so I still went back to Sega until they folded.

I never even saw a Saturn or knew anyone that had one until I bought one from a coworker in my 20s.
>>
>>12586768
I own pretty much every sega console except the dreamcast, if you understand japanese you get access to one of the best libraries of games ever made but the actual quality of the saturn is greatly reduced otherwise since most of the good games were made in Japan.
>>
>>12586774
Yeah I burned a lot of the Japanese heavy hitters when I got the Saturn and used the disc swap trick to play them.

I was overall underwhelmed with it though admittedly I was playing it in the PS2 era. I remember thinking it looked cool in magazines when it was new but so I never encountered one. I had a Game Gear too but only had like Columns and a Sonic game for it.

Funnily enough I did encounter a Jaguar once though. I spent the night at a friends and his dad had one. I finally got to play Kasumi Ninja which I, as a huge MK fan, had seen in game magazines and been building up in my mind as some amazing game I was missing out on. Actually playing it I remember thinking how shit it was.
>>
Sonic didn't get good until Mike Cerny created Sonic 2 Everyone knows that
>>
>>12586691
sorry, but marble zone is like hitting a brick wall
completely kills the pacing
>>
>>12586847
It really does yeah
>>
>>12586847
>>12586848
Sonic 1 rewards skill expression and memorisation with speed, this game only goes at the pace you are willing to go.
>>
>>12586691
It's decent but SMW blows it out of the fucking water and it's why segakiddies will always be a joke to me

People act like the game is mediocre after Green Hill Zone. Fuck that. This game has so much soul and is paced great. Had a much better time playing this than Sonic 3. What a slog that game was after the first couple zones. Also labyrinth zone is underrated as fuck. Great aesthetic and decent platforming

>SMW blows
agreed
>>
>>12586870
the whole point of the game is speed and the level design of marble zone does not lend itself to that at all, it is something more suited to castlevania and its like
gitting as gud as webm related in any game is rewarding, it's less rewarding when you have to wade through shit instead of feeling like you are solving a carefully constructed puzzle with the game's core tenet in mind. Sonic 2, 3 and 3&K also has the former but less of it and does more of the latter

>the whole point of the game is speed
no, it's not. Speed is a reward for memorisation and clever platforming, it is not something handed to you like in Sonic 2. The original sonic was a traditional arcade platformer, speed was a reward for players who understood how the levels were designed and took risks.
>>
>>12588486
>Speed is a reward for memorisation and clever platforming
I have a hard time believing this cope when all the character is specifically designed to do is go fast based on the moveset and physics programmed into the game
it's bad level design, plain and simple
>>
>>12586691
Sorry but sonicCD is better. I like them both though
>>
>>12588530
>I have a hard time refuting your point so i'm just going to mention something already established

>i can't just push right to finish the game WHAAAAA
nintendies need to make up their mind
>>
>>12588819
I don't think it's tendies, it's just people who hardline defend Sonic 2 which is the most braindead and piss easy sonic game ever made, and as such has plagued discussion on any classic sonic game that isn't S3&K ever since.
>>
>>12588841
maybe. Sonic 2 is my least favorite classic. Tails is downright annoying too

>the game is impossible to fail, getting a game over unintentionally never happens
>all the levels lack any real challenge, besides metropolis zone which is the endgame there is no build up or difficulty
>special stages are made null if you bring tails, sonic 1 and CD perfected the special stage formula but 2 fucked it up by bringing dead weight with you
>millions of people view this game as the best sonic game ever made and act like the original is a horrible piece of shit
sonic 2 is a good game but really, it has mentally destroyed the perception of the other games.
>>
>>12588924
2 is also the ugliest of the bunch i'd say
>>
>>12588924
this anon get its. Everything's fault of the STI and the perception americans had of sonicbeing a wacky character character. Yuji Naka wasn't wrong after all.

it's not a "game about speed" it's a platformer with a fast character

exactly, a game about speed

by your own shit for brains retarded logic sonic the hedgehog should be nothing except roads and gardens
>>
>>12586691
I don't know, it feels like a forced meme because this game, unlike SMB, fails to offer a good gameplay loop. (No pun intended), after Green Hill Zone. The game does shit with the physics and gameplay gimmicks. Starting with the second game (and even CD), they started focusing more on Sonic's gameplay dynamics, making for a much more interesting game
>>
>>12586870
>completely blind jumps over swinging platforms
>jumping around every single caterkiller instead of rolling into them
I should really make a better webm
>>
>>12589335
>blind jumps
you mean memorising the stages? the original game is short, it's meant to be replayed.
>jumping around every single caterkiller
okay that is odd.
