>>12587768wonder how feasible would super mario world on master system be
>>12587768did they still manage to fit it in the original 32k ROM size or did they have to go bigger?
>2026 SMS coding competitionFor me, it's Mega Man ZX spectrum editionhttps://youtu.be/YCFZXIvHQ_k?si=lBKcF-mgZGXy31zy
>>12587768Sound is a little obnoxious, but overall very impressive looking
>>12587831the SMS's sound is shit we know
>>12587968>SMSBut, isn't it the Sega System?
>>1258776840 years of hurt never stopped me dreaming
>>12587768I wonder if the SNES would be capable of having the entirety of the original sonic the hedgehog run on it, surely it's feasible right? The Genesis was only a slightly bit more powerful but the SNES could easily compete with a short platformer like sonic on it's hardware.
>>12587812I think it should be possible. The game only has a single graphics set and Z80 code is more compact than 6502 code.
>>12588006Sonic1 is actually quite inefficiently coded, so yes the SNES with optimized code could handle sonic1. The smaller resolution would cause problems though.
>>12588252The ROM has a lot of leftover code from earlier builds of the game they never removed.
>>12588252Same goes for NES Donkey Kong. The code was extremely unoptimized which is why they couldn't fit the pie factory, even though Nintendo would never admit it.
>>12588252Sonic 1 is a 4 megabit game. I will note that SNES graphics and sound data tend to use more space than Mega Drive graphics and sound data, so you'd probably want to use 2 bit color depth to conserve space.
>>12588014It would also use compressed tiles.
>>12588006Granted it's only a tech demo from 2022 and noting more came from it, but yes, the Super NES hardware is capable of doing a game like Sonic 1. You'd just have to deal with some screen crunch (something that plagued a lot of multi-platform releases).https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bttyJBDFdV8
>>12588014Z80 coding is easy, 6502 is a pita. The chip's main advantage was being cheap and that was it.
>>12588403that's why Nintendo used it in Famicom. cheap. also NEC were the only authorized Z80 manufacturer in Japan at the time and they didn't have any spare production capacity for Nintendo.
>>12587812I'm guessing it's gonna be bigger, due to the game featuring graphics option for both NES and All-Stars style graphics, along with having to account for some differences between NES and SMS, like sprite tiles not being able to be flipped by hardware on SMS. Also the homebrew's author mentions that the next demo will also feature a FM sound option.
>>12588478>like sprite tiles not being able to be flipped by hardwareYou can just flip background tiles instead. That was normal practice on Master System games to save space.
>>12588478>along with having to account for some differences between NES and SMSthe Master System has larger graphics due to 4-bit color depth but smaller code so it kind of balances out.
>>12588403the Master System is literally the easiest of all retro consoles/computers to program (although the PS1 is also pretty cake). it's about as hard as writing a Flash game.
Why would one want to play this over SMB1, SMAS or SMBRemastered?
>>12587768https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPGiMPz8ts0Jokes on you, SNES got Sonic 4
>>12588014>Z80 code is more compact than 6502 code.Citation needed. There is also SWEET-16 for specialized work.>>12588403>6502 is a pitaAmateur detected.
>>12590249> SWEET-16Nobody is writing games in that.
>>12590256You could. And how would you know that nobody did that or made another virtual processor?
>>12587768Man, I love the look of Master System games.
Looks like an Amstrad game, except not slow, I wonder how Snes Mario (all stars or World) would be on a PC Engine
>>12587768Everybody knows the SEGA System was more powerful than the Nintendo System. SEGA's first party games were however much inferior and they didn't have third-party support. Only things I'd say is Zillion > Metroid and Shinobi > Ninja Gaiden. Out Run is also great and the sports slop is on average better on SMS.>>12590590Sometimes I think there should be some transitional generation between 3rd and 4th. 3rd gen for me is NES /Famicom, SG-1000, 5200 and Colecovision and 3.5 gen would be Master System, 7800 and TurboGrafx (makes sense if you look at the JP release date)
>>12590652>Turbografx (makes sense if you look at the JP release date)The Turbografx is significantly closer to the Mega Drive than it is the MarkIII/Master System, both by release date and hardware.
>>12588006>I wonder if the SNES would be capable of having the entirety of the original sonic the hedgehog run on itevery 4th gen Sonic game is so trash, none of them would make it past the Nintendo QC department.
>>12590652>Sometimes I think there should be some transitional generation between 3rd and 4thYou're not the first with that idea. https://androidarts.com/palette/Famicube.htm
>>12589220It's just a fun coding exercise, and a way to see what's possible on the SMS. Maybe someone could try to speedrun it to see if it's viable.
>>12590661TurboGrafx was never meant to compete with consoles like the Genesis and the SNES. And it definetly feels a step below them. NEC's true 4th generation console is the short-lived SuperGrafx. Both the PC Engine and the Master System were meant to one-up the Famicom for a while because it was already very old hardware (look at what was coming out on arcades between 85 and 88) but a true 16-bit home console wasn't yet feasible. The generations we use nowadays are the result of both the NES and the TurboGrafx releasing late in the USA.
>>12590753Rondo of Blood looks nicer than Bloodlines or Super Castlevania IV
>>12590753>>12590753>Turbografx was never meant to compete with consoles like the Genesis and the SNES.The Mega Drive was also never meant to compete with the SNES, it was meant to compete with the Famicom and Turbografx. The CD add on put it in a league of its own that the Mega Drive couldn’t quite simulate for years. The Turbografx was a genuine fourth gen console more than capable of keeping up with the MD and SNES; the technological gap between the Master System and Turbografx is larger than that of the Master System and Famicom no matter what cope you conjure.
>>12590794The Super Family Computer was announced in September '87, so the Mega Drive was definetly made with the 16-bit Nintendo system in mind.
>>12590623>Looks like an Amstrad gameThey both have those super saturated colros. I love that look.
